trade Lester and Papelbon for a championship this year? (this is in no way happening [obviously], there is no mention of players.) Just strictly would you be content with winning the championship this year and then not having Paps and Lester?

In the end the Red Sox will have a 1-2 ace combo with Josh Beckett and Jon Lester.....with three dynamite bullpen arms in Papelbon, Hansen, and Delcarmen

.....that has a great chance to win us more than one championship but no guarantees. My answer would be "no" despite the fact the true goal in sports is to win the championship.

A guaranty of a WS Championship, but no Lester or Papelbon? Yes, I take it. No matter how strong you are with those other guys, you are always a short series and a couple of hot pitchers and breaks away from elimination in the playoffs. I'll take my Championship now and worry about replacing those guys later. I am enough of a gambler to know that the odds are never in your favor to win a WS championship at the beginning of a season.

Meh. I'd take my chances with the young kids.

I think we'd be able to be competitive, but also experience the joy of watching these young arms develop. I'm not old enough to remember what it was like for Clemens, but I can imagine it was a lot of fun to see him develop and mature as a pticher.

I get to do that with guys like Lester, Papelbon, Hansen, Delcarmen, etc. and that is a worthwhile experience for me too.

youre guaranteeing a championship??

ya

i move them both reluctantly

too many strange things have happened to pencil in championships in march

considering these kids have yet to pitch an entire season or face minimul adversity its too early to call these guys saviors just yet

that being said

paple may be the mvp of the al this year, honestly can you think of a more valuable player in the al so far and

jon lester has been very impressive in his last 2 starts, his 1st start dont really count due to the 5 hour rain delay.

schilling is our ace

how long do you figure he to be here at his age?will he go to the cubs to reverse a 100 year old curse there too?

without him we got a giant hole in the staff

nows the time to win it all, right now baby

exactly

as loaded as the yanks have been theyre always 2-1 or worse to win it all.

and thats with a 200m payroll

we arent going to sniff anything close to that amount of payroll

you shouldve experienced clemens coming out of game 6 in the 8th inning in shea because of a blister then watching calvin schiraldi's wife curl up in the fetal position as her husband took it in the ass costing us a world series...

that was a helluva an experience

20 fukin years of anxiety and ulcers should be shared by everyone

I would pass. If we had not won in 2004, I would take it, but I'm excited to see these guys develop with us, and if recent pitching is any indication, these 10 years are gonna be some fun s***.

larry anderson was a middle relief pitcher with an era of 3.5 in the astrodome

jeff bagwell was in new britain and lou gorman admitted he never saw him play.

you shouldnt confuse 38 year old larry anderson for 38 year old jon smoltz

this is 1 of the reasons i support the sure thing theory

if i told you in 1986 they wouldnt win again that century?

i wouldve been locked up for insanity

lenny bias was going to bring the celtics another 5 rings when we drafted him in 1986

Are you saying Lester is going to OD and die? :dunno:

Posted

no sir

but he may fall down a flight of stairs(jon curtice) or get into a gun fight at club shalimar in providence(hart lee dykes) or end up blowing out his elbow on a soft liner(juan pena) or he may develop a drinking or drug problem(doc gooden steve howe etc...)

lots of variables

lots of potholes and bumps along the way to glory and hes at game 3 in his career

so far i like what i see

however

if red auerbach got fooled anyone can get fooled

ya im a pessimist when dealing with the prospects

This brings up a question Ive ahd and can't figrue out what will happen because it's hard to tell which way will benefit us better. Do we keep Papelbon as a closer? or move him once Hansen is ready? Or do we switch hansen to be a starter and keep Papelbon there?

200 innings is always more valuable than 80. Unless they intend to turn Papelbon into a throw-back 2 inning closer, ala gossage. If they give the 8th and 9th to Papelbon then I would entertain the idea of keeping him in the pen, but with his talent, he has gotta be stretched out in my mind. Especially when you have a guy in Hansen who is so talented and could be a great closer as well.

Papelbon right now is having the best season a reliever could ever dream of, but who would you rather have? A Mariano, or a Halladay? Papelbon reminds me a lot of Halladay. Halladay comes right after you with fastballs and has that one explosive out pitch in the curve. Papelbon has the explosive splitter, and his fastballs make even the coolest major league hitters sweat bullets.

200 innings of Papelbon makes me happy. I think its at the point where no one can deny that this guy has rare talent. I think that talent is best used in the rotation.

The Yankees and their $200 million payroll are in a 5 year drought. Before 96 they hadn't won for 18 years. The Braves develop great prospects and put out great teams every year, but they have only gone all the way once in this great run. Yaz still can't believe that the Sox team of the mid and late 70's never won a championship and never got back to the Series. You win when you can. There are plenty of great players around the league to enjoy watching. I'd rather watch a championship banner get raised.
