I know theres time till Pena's return, but are we really gonna need, Harris, Kapler and Pena when he does come back? the way it looks at this point, Kapler is here to stay, so do you look to offload one your backup outfielders? I.E. Harris or Pena?

it would have to be Harris, which i think sucks because he could have been a valuable role player for this team. WMP has to stay on this team, unless they can find someone whod be willing to give up a pitcher for him (E. Santana?).

But Willy Mo's playing time will be hurt significantly when he comes back

Are you serious?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Kapler isn't even in the same stratosphere as Pena. He's going to be our RF next year, and going to be the fourth outfielder. Harris is most likely to go.

Yea I mean it's obvious that something need to be done there, but what could you possibly get in return for Harris

nothing he is useless and other teams know that. he will be DFA'd and I don't think the sox really care about losing him.

why would we even consider tradin WMP? You can't compare Wily with Kapler, Wily Mo is SOOOOOOOOOOO much better

WMP is def a better pinch hitter---but Kapler is worlds better in the field (especially RF at Fenway) and has shown (although a small sample size) to be pretty good at the plate! We all know though that Harris is the one to go!

Harris will go, either by DFA or a measley trade. Kapler is not going to be around forever, kind of like a Kevin Millar element to the team, Wily Mo is a future starter

Why dont we just send Harris to AAA, and call him up for the end of the year. I honestly dont see him going anywhere.

because he is out of options and can refuse an assignment

I'll say Harris.

I don't think Kapler should be compared to Millar. Millar was a goofball and his "element" was purely a joke. I agree that Kapler can boost team morale (maybe that is where you were going with your comparison), but his abilities as a ball player are underestimated by many.

I'm not one of them. I love the guy, trains hard, plays hard, and causes no problems. A dirt dog team player. My kind of guy.

I'm not one of them either. I have been a supporter of Kapler since day one, but find myself defending him during discussions with some Sox fans. I think Gabe is exactly the type of player EVERY team needs!

Amen ! We're in agreement.

You can say that again. Look at the serious injury Gabe suffered last summer. Many said he would never really come back to form. Oh really? Who hit that three run bomb into the Green Monster seats in the ninth, or was it a mirage. Gabe is very valuable to the Red Sox and he is producing to boot. Of course, we keep Pena and send Harris on his way back on a night train to Georgia. He never should have been put on the team in the first place. The guy can't do anything but run.:D ;) :)

And he can play multiple positions. He wouldn't be a bad guy to have on a playoff roster.

So how many positions has he played this year? The three outfield positions?

WMP did that in ONE GAME.

WMP will play a major role with this club. That may not happen until next year, but Kapler will never be more than a defensive replacement and role player. There is room enough on the roster this year for both. Thye other Willie, the POS Harris will get DFA'd. The bench is shaping up nicely.

A lot will depend on what happens with Trot Nixon the rest of the season. If he continues to perform well and is willing to give the Red Sox a decent discount and the Red Sox are willing to be fair with him he could be back for two or three more seasons. I sure as hell do not want to see him going to the Yankees. Of course, it also depends on how much progress David Murphy makes in AAA ball this season. If they deem him ready he could be with the Red Sox next season as a 4th outfielder or a platoon partner with Pena. I still am not convinced Pena is the real thing, though. He was starting to revert to his Cincy ways when he came up lame. So all this outfield drama is still very much up in the air. All I know is that I want to see Kapler kept on the team.

You have bashed WMP since he came here, but the reality is......that he is here to stay. They didnt acquire a 24 year old slugger for a reliable pitcher with the intention of Gabe Kapler or an unproven David Murphy to EVER take time away from him. Take a very close look at David Ortiz's Career (http://www.baseball-reference.com/o/ortizda01.shtml), and compare it to WMP's. Ill say it again, people in the FO know a lot more than we do, and we have to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Completely agree, although I think Willie Harris does have some value.....more than a POS anyway.

No comparison...WMP is the future masher of this club. Kapler's a great late inning guy, but we've seen the extent of his potential. We haven't even scratched the surface of WMP's potential yet.

SCM, you call it bashing; I call it something else. Look, if WMP becomes our next great power hitter all Red Sox Nation will rejoice. I just have this thing for strikeouts and I just don't think he will ever measure up to Big Papi and to compare him with David does nothing but add more pressure to Pena. If Papa Jack can keep working his swing to where he makes more consistent contact then we've hit the jackpot because we will need some right handed power to take the place of Manny Ramirez when he leaves after the 2008 season. I'm hoping for the best with Wily Mo, but maybe I am guilty of expecting the worst. Isn't that what most Red Sox fans have come to expect over the years?
