Yankees may get Sheffield back in the lineup against Boston

NY Yankees (24-19) at Boston (26-16) 7:05 pm EDT

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Instead of losing a player to injury, the New York Yankees might actually get one back.

Starting right fielder Gary Sheffield could return Tuesday night as the Yankees continue a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Sheffield has not played since April 29 after a collision with Toronto's Shea Hillenbrand at first base led to a left wrist injury. Since Sheffield last played, the Yankees have lost starting left fielder Hideki Matsui to a fractured wrist, reserve outfielder Bubba Crosby to a right hamstring injury, starting pitcher Shawn Chacon to a leg injury and reliever Tanyon Sturtze to a shoulder injury.

Sheffield took batting practice prior to Sunday's game with the New York Mets. On Monday, he went 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly in a rehab game at New Britain for Class AA Trenton.

The Yankees sure could use Sheffield's presence. Since Matsui went down on May 11, the starting outfield has been a combination of Damon, Bernie Williams, Melky Cabrera, Crosby and Terrence Long and without their starting corner outfielders, the Yankees are 5-6 following Monday's 9-5 loss here.

Chien Ming-Wang had a rough six innings Monday and the Yankees are hoping Jaret Wright (1-3, 4.94 ERA) can turn in a fourth straight decent outing. Wright, who is 1-4 in nine lifetime starts vs. the Red Sox, has allowed seven runs and 14 hits in 17 1/3 innings over his last three outings.

The Red Sox have won 11 of their last 16 and four of five from the Yankees this season after Curt Schilling allowed one run in eight innings and Manny Ramirez hit a two-run homer on Monday.

Tim Wakefield (3-5, 4.17) will face the Yankees for the third time this season. He did not get a decision in Boston's 7-3 win here but improved to 9-12 lifetime against New York by pitching six strong innings May 11 at Yankee Stadium.

ORS....mojo please. I smell a Sox win, again.

Wily Mo Pena did not take batting practice today and is out of the lineup with a sore left wrist. Pena, who was seen squeezing silly putty to work the wrist in the clubhouse, said he hopes to take batting practice tomorrow and return to the lineup. He did not seem to think the injury was very serious.

Willie Harris will take his spot and bat 9th.

Take out Giambi and put in Sheffield? fine by me, Sox win 6-3 tonight after a solo blast by "If it doesn't count, count on" A-Rod in the 9th

Wright vs. Wakefield is a very interesting pitching matchup allow I would have to give the edge to the Red Sox, especially considering how Wakefield does against the Yankees. On the other hand, if I'm not mistaken Wright beat the Red Sox in his only start last year at Fenway in April.

It is also nice to see Sheffield back, and does anyone know if Giambi is hurt or if Torre is just giving him a day off because he has been struggling a bit lately?

lets go sox...

come on wake lets pitch a one hitter. just dont let that hit be a solo homer to giambi.

Idiot. The lineup was even posted before you posted this. Giambi's not even in the game.

Wright had 2 starts at Fenway, the 2nd start at Fenway was a 10-1 Yankees loss in the last game of the season.

3.1 innings- 3 Hits, 3 Runs, 5 Walks

The Red Sox scored first in the very first game between these two teams this year and won.

That is correct. On an Ortiz single, I believe.
