Many people say Lester could be better than papelbon. Yes, yes, they are unproven, but so was Albert Pujols and Manny Ramirez, Pedro Martinez and King Felix. Some teams fear the unproven (yankees) and others know it is a fact of life (everybody else).

You are so wrong its not even funny about the Marlins "cutting their losses" getting rid of Beckett. Cutting their losses? How about cutting their chance of having a big loss by letting him go to FA after this season? That makes a little more sense. Jack Mackeon left there saying Beckett was the best of the group, and clearly superior to Burnett. He won a WS MVP only 2.5 seasons ago. Cutting their losses... ha. That's like saying Texas was cutting its losses when it sent A-Rod to NY. Whawt a joke.

Cutting their losses on a 25 year old stud starting pitcher. C'mon man. You're smarter than that.

Beckett is a FA after next season. They were "cutting their losses" on Beckett because they knew they were not going to contend by the time Beckett came to free agency and they were sick of seeing him occupying the DL instead of the win column. Also, last season he was shut down because of a shoulder injury, which will scare a ton of folks. Basically, he had a ton of value this offseason, they knew they werent going to keep him past 2007, and they knew they were blowing their s*** up for a few yrs. Dealing him now meant a ton of sense and keeping Willis makes even more sense. If you had to pick one player between Willis and Beckett after last season to keep, obviously they would have kept willis, any sane person would.

Yea the injuries scared me at first with beckett but come on, he is an electric pitcher when he is on and he is very young. to pair dontrelle willis, curt schilling, josh beckett, tim wakefield, matt clement, would be the ultimate rotation. Get crisp healthy and then we'd be smokin!

Felix Hernandez: 2-4, 4.58 ERA.

You are saying you wouldn't want Felix Hernandez? Ha ha.

Tuesday: 7.2 IP, 5 H, 8 K, 2 BB against major league hitting.

30-something days ago: 20th birthday.

Barring injury, Felix Hernandez will be one of the best pitchers of his generation. I have little doubt.

A lot of people are talking about Dontrelle Willis but is anyone else scared off by his stats this month? He is getting crushed and I'm not sure if its because his team sucks or he just isn't pitching well.

I might be one of the few here but I want to keep Jon Lester and I think the Red Sox do too. He is getting better with every start in AAA and his velocity is increasing. By midseason I see no reason the kid could be "lights-out" in the minors and give us a very good, young, electric 5th starter incase we have the need. By the time he enters the majors he will have a three major league pitches that can get batters out plus a few secondary pitches.

Im trying to find if he pitched in then WBC... I suspect he did..

Doesnt really matter in the end... neither the Sox nor The Scumbags from the Bronx can offer anything for him.

I should rephrase that.. The Yankees have nothing to offer for him..

I'm in total agreement with you on Lester. Don't trade him for Willis who is overrated as a pitcher.

The Sox are not quite ready to dip into the farm system for lefthander Jon Lester, who is at Triple A Pawtucket, and the team is certainly not going to move Jonathan Papelbon out of the closer's role.

Florida's Dontrelle Willis has long been talked about as a pitcher who may be available near the trading deadline, although the Marlins deny it. But the lefthander would come at a high price. Don't forget, Jason Varitek developed a strong rapport with Willis at the World Baseball Classic, catching all of his starts.

interesting info about Willis and Varitek, forgot that he was Willis's personal catcher during the WBC. I wouldnt mind Willis on the team, but Lester might be too much. Its tough to tell, but with Wells looking like he might be out for a while, if not done for the season, we need someone else. Especially if Roger goes back to Houston.

Lester is certainly a reasonable price for Willis. If that was the price, it would have been done already. I am sur they want Lester plus more. How could you say that Lester even up for Willis is too much? Would you be willing to trade Beckett for some team's top pitching prospect, let's say Jared Weaver? Of course not, you don't trade a young stud pitcher even up for a prospect. The Marlins have been asking for David Wright from the Mets. Do you really think that they will only ask for Lester from us.

I know Lauria said that Cabrera and Dontrelle were staying put...but you've gotta think that Theo is at least looking at the possibility of bringing Dontrelle to Boston. With the Marlins liquidation at the beginning of the season, I've gotta think that Lauria saying that was just a way to drive up the price for Willis to astronomic proportions. What are the odds that there's a package that the Sox would put together for him? Seeing that that 5th starter position is as huge a question mark as Anderson Cooper's sexuality...they've gotta be looking at least a bit outside the organization. Dontrelle is one of the only guys I'd give up Lester/Hansen in a deal for. I wouldn't do it for Zito (Who, I guess, may be going to New York again for Lastings Milledge...talks have apparently started again...)

We've gotta face it...Wells is done. We've gotta do SOMETHING because our number 5 is a huuuuuuuuge diceroll start after start after start.

Hmm while it would be nice to see the DTrain roll to Boston, my guess is it's highly unlikely as I'm sure the Marlins would demand way too much than we're willing to give.

Has anyone watched Willis this year? Im watching the Marlins and the Mets right now, and his delivery looks way different than I ever remember it. I dont know whats going on.

Oh, and, this is kind of off topic, but, everytime I try to make an apostrophe, I get some kind of wierd search bar down at the bottom of my screen. Anyone know whats up with that?

I watched Dontrelle a little bit today against the Mets, and I honestly don't think he'd be a good fit in Boston. He gave up a lot of fly balls, which is never good in the small park we have, especially for lefties. Also, getting him would definately cost some serious prospects, and that's something that Theo is very weary of doing. I believe that the Yankees won't have the ability to get him either, however. It'll be interesting to see where he ends up if he is traded.

dontrell willis will most likely not put up numbers like he did last season again, let alone in fenway park.
