ok, I know its early but maybe he is starting to live up to his anticipation. It doesn't look like any coincidence that he's been lights out so far. My question is, though it isn't technically his "rookie" season, could he still potentially win it, given the fact that this is his first full season.I like his fantasy comparison too, although in the spectrum of things, and especially this early in the season it really doesn't mean much:

Jonathan Papelbon 349.5

Pedro Martinez 314

Greg Maddux 304.5

Billy Wagner 287

Bronson Arroyo 279

He actually is a rookie this year. You need 50+ IP or 30+ days on the roster prior to September 1 to lose rookie status. He came up in mid-August last year, so no 30+ days, and only pitched 34 innings. If he keeps this up, the ROY is a lock.

Yeah, right now, Liriano and Papelbon would be the favorites, but Papelbon is leaps and bounds ahead of him... because hes a beast. Liriano at this point would only be considered a monster which is slightly less godly than a beast. Tough luck.

Papelbon is clearly leading the way. If he continues at this pace, he will not only win ROY but the Rolaids Relief award. I think they still call it that.

it's still early on.. not that i'm cheering against paps but liriano throws complete filth.. i've seen him pitch 3 times this season and it's been amazing. he's going to be a stud.

By the end of the season you know someone will bring up the value part of the mvp award, and papelbon certainly holds a lot of value to this team and decides how well it will do. With him going 10 for 10 he's insured us wins maybe ther closers couldn't a la Foulke last year.

Who else is there so far?? Justin Verlander has done alright to this point. Our own Hanley Ramirez has done well thus far, Taylor Buccholz in Houston....

I can't find anyone in the month of April who is a rookie that has come close to the start Papelbon has had.

Hanley Ramirez and Taylor Buccholz would be in contention for the NL award, but since both leagues recognize a ROY, they won't affect Papelbon's chances.

Oh true I was just trying to find who all the rookies are to this point. Very few thus far but some will get called up in the coming month I'm sure

Paplebon is the leader at this point. He might stay at closer all year and if not he can still be a grade a starter.

I think the MVP thing would DEFINITELY be a stretch...I'd have to think that a starter would get it if any P was going to, or maybe not? Starters only throw every five days...who knows?

All I know is this kid is the real thing.

I've never rooted so hard against any of my fantasy players as I did against ARod when he came up against Little Pappy the other night in the 9th. How freaking awesome was it that the kid showed the cahones to throw a high fastball right down broadway to the argueably the best player in the game? Priceless, absolutley priceless. My favorite part of the season thus far, easily. I loved Tito's idea to get him into a Yanks game even though it wasn't a save situation, they could have easily let Timlin pitch the rest of the game. Getting his feet wet in the rivalry, and hearing how utterly NUTS Fenway can get was, I think, an AWESOME move. Did Papelbon get into any games at the Stadium last year?

And another thing...another 70 some-odd consecutive converted save opportunities and we're at Gagne level :)

He played in like 40 games last year, so I'd say no

I think you have to have like 150 at-bats to have it be your rookie season...it could be 250, but that seems like a lot...

i think if he stays as a closer a keep up what he's doing he is gonna have a great chance ,however if they move him back to the rotation it would probly lower his chance

It is not even close. Papelbon is definitely the AL Rookie of the yr to this point. He could not possibly be doing any better and with a closer winning it last yr, they set the precedent....

It is WAY to early to be talking about MVP right now.

Right now Pap's looks liek the front runner for ROY and whatever the hell the "reliever of the year" award is right now. But there's still 5 months left in the season anything can happen.

And as for whoever said Relievers won't win MVP's Rivera was the front runner for the MVP for liek 3 months untill he stumbled in September he threw like what was 38 consecutive saves and so manny batters w/o giving up a run.

Liriano is a bonafide stud. He's pitching an absolute gem right now.

2 hitter through 7, 6 Ks.

Are you kidding? I don't think Papelbon needs anything to be over the hump, he is the talk of baseball and is an absolute machine. If he doesn't win the AL ROY, there is something wrong with the way these awards are given out.
