Are you kidding? I don't think Papelbon needs anything to be over the hump, he is the talk of baseball and is an absolute machine. If he doesn't win the AL ROY, there is something wrong with the way these awards are given out.

If you look at the closers thread, you can see that the case could be made that BJ Ryan is having just as good of a season as Papelbon is. A closer winning ROY has to have one of two things happen...one being there isn't any real competition for it (IE Street last year), and two they have to be having an out of the world type season anyway. Since, as of now, Ryan's numbers are comparable to Papelbon's, I wouldn't say that Papelbon is the favorite of anything right now. It's very close between him and Liriano.

I do know this, if Liriano pitches as well as he has tonight, or even remotely close to it, there's no debate at all. He'll be ROY.

I don't know about that though, Paps gets a ton of exposure playing for Boston that Liriano doesn't get. I don't know what BJ Ryan has to do with the ROY though, he's having a great year as well but not as good as Paps. You can make the arguement all you want but Paps has been better. I do agree that it will come down to Paps and Liriano though but I don't think the Twins will win enough games for Liriano for him to get it. Paps will end the year with 50 saves IMO and if he keeps his ERA insanely low he will win ROY.

you dont know why BJ Ryan has to do with ROY? are you kidding me lets see the stats

paps 1-1 , 0.25 ERA 35.2IP, 19H, 1ER, 4BB, 35K, 0.64WHIP, OPP BA.153, 8.75K/BB, 8.83K/9

ryan 1-0, 0.49ERA, 37IP, 17H, 2ER, 8BB, 43K, 0.68WHIP, OPP BA.142, 5.38K/BB, 10.46K/9

the only difference that stands between the 2 right now is 1 run and 3 saves

as of now paps gets it ,however ryan is a verry close second , if paps allows another ER there are even

well you dont have to be a rookie to win the ROY , wich he was talking about too

So, now that we all know that BJ Ryan has nothing to do with the Rookie of the Year award, I think its safe to say its between Liriano and Papelbon. Papelbon and Ryan are both pitching their way into the record books, Papelbon being a rookie, its that much more impressive. I think Liriano has to have a sub-3 ERA with a good deal of wins to be able to take the award from Papelbon. Right now, its without question Jon's award to lose.

The point he was bringing up about BJ Ryan, I believe, is that his dominance diminishes what Papelbon is doing. If there was no competition for the title of 'best closer', then Paps would have a better shot at ROY.

Well, considering no one is standing out or consistent so far, Liriano and Papelbon may not only be in contention to win the ROY, but the Cy Young perhaps, though Ryan may be put into that category. Also I can't think of any locks for MVP either.

IMO, Papelbon is the AL Cy Young right now, and it's not very close.

Um, he may not be winning, and it's very close.

If he keeps at his current pace, he'll have put up the best performance by a reliever in modern baseball history.

He has more saves than baserunners allowed. He's been unfathomably good this year.

this thread is not a question, it is a definite. Unless Liriano has a 20 strike out game or something, its got to be Paps at this rate

Why? I keep hearing that starters are more valuable than closers, that a guy who can give you 200+ quality innigns is more important than a guy who gives you 70.

If Liriano keeps this up all year, then I say he's definitely big competition for ROY. I'm not underestimating what Paps has done. I just don't think it's as "slam dunk" as all of you seem to.

Here's why. Take their current rates and project them out for the rest of the season. Liriano's debut season is a very good one, excellent in fact. Papelbon's is historic.

Papelbon is projected to have an Eckersley type of season. The fact that he is still considered a rookie is all the more impressive. Ecks won a Cy Young with a 0.61 ERA I believe
