It was 30 years and 2 days ago that Rick Monday, as a visiting Chicago Cub to Dodger Stadium, rescued the American flag from 2 losers who jumped the OF fence and attempted to burn the flag in front of the crowd. Monday went over, and snatched the flag from the men and was given a deserving standing ovation.

I know I wasn't around at the time, but I feel as though it's necessary to recognize this event.

wow i have never even heard about this but what he did was awesome and seeing the pictures from it is really cool! and i agree people who want to burn the american flag shouldnt be here and should be forced to leave

Isn't it a felony anyway?

Nope...it's completely legal as long as the flag belongs to you and you're not endangering anyone. It's an act that is protected by the first amendment's "freedom of speech".

I just got the whole story from my social studies teacher husband :D

DUDE IM NOT LYIN I'll saw YOUK OF NATION W/ MATSUI IN JAP BATHROOM TOGETHER

THEY BE TALKING ABOUT HOW IT WOULD BE COOL TO USE THE AMERICAN FLAG AS A TAMPON

No offence, but it's a bit annoying everytime someone commits an act that shows disapproval of America, that every American wants to jump the gun and exile the person. Isn't that contradicting the first amendment?

So what you are saying is you are not American so therefore you do not make sense because every american would not want to exile that person

Are you even making any sense right now? When did I say I was anti-American? All I was trying to say is keep in mind that there is still an amendment that protects your "freedom of speech," or at least that was its intention when the constitution was originated, and even if I don't agree with someone elses actions I'm not going to strip anyone of their rights. Why should I? Because I want to be an arrogant baby and cry over a stupid flag being burned? Hey, I heard somewhere that they burn the flag anyways when they deem it not usable anymore.

I think you just confirmed your anti-Americanism.

Did I mention specifics on the flag? No. I love my country and all, but those who express disapproval of it in some capacity, I will not suppress their "freedom of speech." Because it's part of the constitution and what gives me the right to suppress somebody elses right? I may not agree with whatever he/she maybe saying or doing, but I'm not going to hit the "exile" button just because they are not all hugs and kisses with America. Thats all I was trying to say, even though I am going to be labeled anti-America from now on since thats the way our society reacts nowadays.

After all, it's just a stupid flag.;)

There is just something inherently wrong about burning your own country's flag though. To me it symbolizes that you would like to see the whole country go down in flames, since the flag is a symbol of our country. If you aren't happy with the country, find other, more productive, ways of expressing your feelings such as writing to a congressman, petitions, making a speech, writing a paper, etc.

I fully support people's right to express their displeasure with their government; however, I feel I should have the constitutional right make them swallow a few teeth when they do it in my presence.

I'm not going to be one to sit here and say I agree with every single solitary thing that America has done during my life time and will do in the duration of my lifetime, but I'm sick and tired of these people. It seems like the "in" thing to do now to be anti-american, anti-bush, anti-establishment, whatever, and it's absolutley retarded. Especially because 90% of people have ABSOLUTELY no idea what they're complaining about, they just heard other people doing it, so they started doing it to. Everyone fails to answer the question "If the US is so bad, why don't you leave?" The funny thing is, I'm not yelling "GET OUT!" to them, but merely asking them why, if they hate the Country so much, they continue to live here.

I'm a huge believer in taking the good with the bad. There's some things that go on here that I don't like, but there's an overwhelming amount of unbelievable opportunities afforded to us because we live in the country that we do.

Go ahead and burn the flag, doing so is a symbol more of your ignorance than anything else. Plus...I think it'd be fun to shove a burning flag down their pants.

Because this is supposedly a "democratic" nation in which people have the right to force or express change to the flaws that they dislike. Thats what makes us distinct from living in Afghanistan under Taliban rule. There are things that I disapprove of that this country does, but I'm also not going to leave because of it. I will exercise the rights that our founding fathers have granted us and do something to make a change. If we ever started exiling everyone that dislikes something about this country, then what would make us any different from a fascist nation?

Note: Actually what we live under isn't the true definition of a democracy. Nowadays I would say we're more like an oligarchy.

They were burning the flag that gives them that very right, they damn well should have been deported.

In the words of Vin Scully "I hope there's a boat waiting for those two".

Yeah, that's what I was going to say. They're burning the symbol for the very nation that even allows them to burn that symbol in the first place. There are better ways to show your displeasure about America. Burning a flag is not one of those better ways. Without that flag, there is no freedom of speech. Burning the flag is un-American. Period.

It goes beyond protesting the actions of the government. It is a slap in the face of every American that loves this country and the brave men that fought and gave their lives to preserve the freedoms symbolized by the flag.

Eh, I think it'd be a better service to the flag to allow the full excercise of the rights it represents. I mean, do we really want to start regulating unpopular speech...that seems like a dangerous road to go down to me.

You'll find few people who love this country more than me ( my parents, two immigrants to this country, would probably give me or my sisters a quick smack if we said something bad about this country:lol: ) but, given the choice between defending the flag or what it stands for, I'd go for the latter.

That being said, if I saw a person burning a flag, I'd probably let them know, ver clearly, where I stand on that (I'm small, but I have alot of punch. )
