Based on this season, no.

He has been very consistent over his career though. His mechanics must be out of whack or something. You don't go from that good for that long to really bad overnight. Hes also relatively young. He was a front of the rotation type guy. Any reports of him losing velocity?

Ya its called having arm problems. He's not very good anymore and has gotten beaten up in the NL.

So, you give a guy who has a 6.00 ERA a big contract?

Mulder's done. His hit rate has been increasing every year, and his strikeouts are down. He's also pitching in the NL. I wouldn't touch this guy with a 10 foot pole. He'd get torched in the International League.

Actually, I was agreeing with you.

But I also added that if he becomes available, or STL is willing to dump and eat...he may be a nice low risk move (assuming they eat some).

Back to thread relevance......

WMP is a f***in monster.

Isn't he hurt? I'd like to know what type of injury it is, and if it will have lasting effects. Pre-2006 Mulder is a pitcher I'd be interested in.

Left shoulder impingement

Serious? Fixable? Rehab time? Lasting effects? I'm not familiar with that one. Anything you've got would be appreciated.

I googled it. I wouldn't give Mulder anything more than a Wade Miller type deal, because there is a risk that he pitches in as many games a Wade did last year.

EDIT: That is, asssuming he gets a procedure done to correct it.

How about some WMP love today?

He was billed as being dangerous on lefties and it was assumed he’d be platooned with Trot for those situations. But the damage he’s done against RHP is compelling enough IMO to give him more opportunities even when Trot does come back.

More opportunities? I hope Trot finds a nice bleacher pad for his ass, because if I'm the manager, he's going to be sitting a lot when he gets off the DL.

Im going to go into convulsions if I see Tito start Trot right away when he comes back from the DL

Yeah, Pena is a fantastic hitter, MUCH better than Nixon. He as also shown he is an adequate fielder, one of our main concerns. I would keep Trot on the team for the remainder of this year, give time off to all 3 outfielders occasionally, and put him on the playoff roster if we get there, but Pena has got to start this and next year.

Nixon's days are done in Boston. He knows it, the FO knows it and most fans know it. He played hard here in his time and gave everything he had but his skills have declined significantly and WMP is a much better hitter and has shown he can also play some RF as well. If Francona evens thinks of giving Nixon his starting job back then he truly is a fool because Nixon has not done enough to warrant the playing time.

Ive been saying since day1, and seabeachfred has disagreed with me since day 1. I think we just getting a taste of how good he is. He is still very undisciplined swinging at some awful pitches, but when he gets something he can handle watch out. His talent is just getting tapped.

BTW....has anyone noticed that he is playing a much better RF?? Hes getting much better jumps and lets not forget the throw he made the other day.

writers of rotoworld, like usual, dont know what theyre talking about

Sure it would weaken the defense, but Wily Mo Pena is making a strong case to start over Coco Crisp in center field against right-handers following Trot Nixon’s return. He has more than a 350-point advantage in OPS versus righties, and his glovework hasn’t been too shabby since the first month of the year. The Red Sox will likely need his power bat behind David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez in the lineup if they hope to make the playoffs. He’s sure to keep playing against lefties for the rest of the season, but it would be for the best if he’s a regular.

I first watched him play in ST 2005. I think he hit a HR, double and single. Everything he hit exploded off his bat. Dunn and Papi hit tape-measure jobs as well. It was an unbelievable display of power that day. Wily Mo opened my eyes, because I knew very little about him.

see, you say you want to have patience with players, then you come out with this line. You have said he has arm problems, okay, hence this year is a wash. If you take out this year, being the one that he has missed the majority of due to his shoulder injury, he has had a fine career to this point. Last yr he was great in the NL as he was in OAK. If this is a one year thing then he is a solid 2 on any club.

Basically his MRI showed inflammation of the rotator cuff and slight fraying of the Labrum.

The fraying of the labrum is normal for anyone who has ever played competetive baseball. The inflammation of the cuff is worrisome. Once the inflammation comes down, there might be a tear hidden under there.

Well, at least that is what I hear from every baseball tonight when they go over a pitchers MRI, lol.

I don't get what you mean? Wily Mo is a defensive downgrade from Coco, that isnt a question. But, are we talking a Lowell to ARod downgrade (bad) or a Loretta to Cano downgrade (not so bad)? That will be important.

ok...

I highlighted that it says they think Wily Mo will have a good advanatge of getting most of the starts in center field over Coco Crisp when righties are on the mound... the time that Trot gets back. It should be obvious to everyone, at least I think it should, that Wily Mo Pena has earned the starting right field job and shouldnt be involved in any s***** plattons anymore.

Its not about defense at all

He will not get the long term contract he thinks he will get because of this injury. And a team like the Red Sox won't touch him.

that is true, but to say he is "not that good anymore" when you already acknoweldge he is hurt is counterintuitive. If he were healthy and put up a 6ERA, then I'd agree, but he is hurt and is way above his baseline performance in terms of ERA. I'd like to think a guy with 5 solid yrs under his belt has earnethe right to have a bad season when he is injured and is not actually "not that good anymore." You preach patience with the young kids, but have no patience for guys who underperform due to injury. Seems a little hypocritical if you ask me.

Mulder was not that good in 2005. Despite his 3.64 ERA last year oppnonents hit .273 off him and his K numbers were down with his walk numbers up. If he was in the AL he would have been alot worse. I hope the Red Sox stay very far away from this guy whose numbers have been declining yearly.

I couldn't agree more. He's damaged goods. There's no reason to go near him. They need to look elsewhere and not waste their time even considering this guy.

We all harp on Nixon for his proneness to injury, but Wil Mo's is off to a really bad start in that direction. So, far the injuries are limited to his wrist, but it is looking to be a chronic problem. That's not a good thing for a power hitter that K's a lot.

700 Hitter, since I haven't been on this board for three weeks I guess you were not talking about me. Yes, you are right. This wrist thing with Wily Mo is a real concern to me and it should be to the rest of us. These things have a tendency to get worse before they get better and a power hitting outfielder who has a bad wrist not only loses a lot of power but when you combine that with his strikeout totals you have a massive problem. However, I thought Nixon would be back now. How bad is he really hurt?

I've been wondering where you've been. Welcome back. I don't know about Nixon. As with all his injuries, they are optimistic about a quick return and then there are complications. The latest complication was an infection. He's supposed to return in early September, which is next week.
