As I said in an earlier post Neither One of them should have their numbers retired by the Red Sox. The were disloyal to the team, and therefore, let some other team retire their numbers.

You have a twisted sense of the term disloyal. It was pretty clear the Duke didn't want Clemens back, and Pedro got an extra guranteed year to leave. If they got hurt in their last year with the Red Sox, we wouldn't be offering them a contract. Theres no loyalty from the team to the player, why should it go the other way?

Yeah, I mean if Pedro really is one of the greatest players of all time (as he clearly is) then the Red Sox are the ones who are being disloyal. People are saying on one hand that they think Pedro is so good that he will be a Sox HOFer, perhaps the greatest pitcher of all time, and worthy of a retired number (performance wise). On the other hand they are saying "He's too old to live up to the contract and is being selfish for wanting a 4th year". A 4TH YEAR!! For $10, $14, $14, and $11.5 million respectively, the red sox passed on a pitcher who likely has 3 solid seasons left in him before being a 1st ballot HOFer and the pitching hero of a generation of Sox fans. Pedro wanted a longer contract and the sox wouldn't give it to him.

It looks like disloyalty on Pedro's part, but who can more easily afford to improperly spend millions of dollars? Pedro (who would likely lose 12 million or so without that 4 year) or the Red Sox (a team that has a payroll of 130 million dollars, sells out every game, and is one of the best marketed teams in all of sport). Obviously the Sox should take the hit, not Pedro.

I'm not mad that he's gone, I'm well over that. But I certainly don't hold it against him.

Then I agree. Pedro before Clemens is a given. Now I have to be honest with you and the rest of the guys on this board. There is a bias in my opinion, and that bias is the Yankees. Pedro did not go to the Yankees; Clemens eventually did and bragged about how he wants to enter the Hall of Fame as a Yankee. That does it for me.

Guapo, I wouldn't call it twisted as you do; just old fashioned thinking. I wasn't part of Red Sox Nation when Clemens played for the Red Sox, but from what I've read and heard he made no effort to stay with the Bosox. He was looking for something else as soon as the '96 season was over. Anyway, let's just agree to disagree and move on. I know I'm not going to change your mind and you won't change mine. As for Pedro, my opinion is that he was very upset to take second fiddle to Curt Schilling and didn't like it when he had to take a back seat to him. Again, it is just my opinion, but I believe he had no intention of returning even if the Red Sox would have added that extra year.

Yeah, that aint exactly bein the sox best friend when he does that but he I guess was honestly hurt by the Sox former FO and had an awfully tainted perception of how Sox Nation viewed him, I mean his wife even said "They treat him like Hitler". I think it's more that he was hurt, but now he is considering us because of the repsect that has gone both ways lately.

CC33, I'm afraid I'm going to have to take a back seat to you and Guapo on the Clemens thing because you have been Red Sox fans longer than I have been, but, again, I really don't think Clemens want to come back to Boston. I may be wrong and, hopefully, I am, because he could get him and he pitches as he did last year we could wind up back in the World Series. It's just that I feel deep inside that he's playing us all for suckers. I guess we'll have to wait and see how all this plays out.

You got that right. I saw Clemens as a rookie, and it was a privilege to watch him pitch. He is one of the all-time greats. Only a very elite few have surpassed him, but he was always a jackass, and epitomizes the term "mercenary." However, he would be a great addition to this years staff. One of the few that surpasses Rocket is Pedro who is the most spectacular and best pitcher that I have ever seen.

700 Hitter, if Clemens can be the difference that would get us into the World Series then I say go for it. Look, to me it is NOT enough to win one World Series and then become a cropper for a decade or so. To establish the Red Sox as one of the game's three or four elite teams we have to get back to the World Series as soon as we can. One more thing. Think of what it would be for our young prospects to know they are coming to a team that has proven that it can go all the way. What a morale and spirit booster for them and the organization, not to mention the millions of Red Sox fans salivating at such a event.

I agree with everything you are saying. It would be a kick to see Clemens pitch for the Sox for one final season, but that doesn't mean that he isn't a jackass. I loved watching him pitch, but I could do without listening to him.

Easily done 700. When he's being interviewed turn down the volume or shut the TV off. In print, just skip anything where he is being quoted and move on. Nothing to it.
I do. I do.

Then you're in good shape. Think of it this way, does Clemens give us a better chance to get to the World Series? If you think so, don't you think you can put up with his bull@#$% if you can still turn down the volume? I say go for it.

Right 700, right on the nose. We can always hold our nose and root for a guy we might not like if it will help our team win. Besides, I wasn't part of Red Sox Nation when Clement was here so I don't hold any animosity towards him except for the fact that he played five years for the MFY. I just hope he is not just playing us like a fiddle.

Yeah, there's no reason to boo Millar at all, he was a clubhouse leader and was decent most of the time he was here. Without him we might lose Game 4 to Mo and the Yanks. However Damon wil most definately get boos.
