Sorry I don't have a link, but this trade is supposedly being discussed:

Sox trade: Matt Clement, Alex Cora

Nationals trade: Jose Vidro, Jay Bergman

Mets trade: Lastings Milledge, Xavier Nady

Sox get: Lastings Milledge, Xavier Nady

Nationals get: Matt Clement, Alex Cora

Mets get: Jose Vidro, Jay Bergman

Supposedly, the original request was for Victor Diaz but the Mets didn't want to trade him, also Omar Minaya is trying to work Livan Hernandez into the deal somehow...

What do you guys think?

Pros of giving up Matt Clement, Cora

opens more of a possible spot for our boy Papelbon

exit of Cora could mean a better chance of Tony G staying on board

plus this would give the Sox the right fielder for 07 to replace Trot

i'll wait until there is a link.

i saw this a little while ago on the espn board im to stupid to find out how to put on a link but go to that

He referenced a post here: http://sonsofsamhorn.net/index.php?showtopic=2826&st=1010

But mentions that Boston is balking? I'd think they'd want to dump Clement's salary along with his late season performance.

I'm with you Yazman...

I have actually been told by this source the deal is in the final stages, and the only team holding back on this deal is indeed Boston who is the most reluctant.

Maybe Theo thinks he can get Pedro back in the deal too? :dunno:

Personally, I think Milledge will be a bust, but that's just me.

I'm thinking either the Mets want to give us Matsui as someone mentioned on the ESPN boards, or that Theo is trying to get Livan Hernandez included?

He's like Hanley was. Ready 4 years ago but still not ready...

Why would the Sox want Livan Hernandez anyway?

It would make sense to get Livan if we were also shipping Wells out in the deal. It would be perfect, upgrades SP and still makes room for Pap.

Schilling

Beckett

Hernandez

Wakefield

Ok, with Arroyo in the pen I guess.. Here's the thing, with Arroyo making 3-4 million and a possible need for a closer (I have no faith in Foulke), do you really think they'd swing Arroyo as the long man?

I think we'll know by the end of April if Pap is the closer until Hansen arrives in midseason. Arroyo I think makes the rotation out of spring (new contract and all).

I think Foulke will suck this spring because he does every spring training. If he doesn't have it turned around starting game 1, I think Pap is out of the rotation until midseason.

Gordon Edes did suggest that Paps is plan B if Foulke were to act like 2005. Id want him in the rotation of course, but this kid was steel through the september stretch as the main setup man (ranked the best in the league), and threw 4 scoreless innings in the playoffs. Best game of his in relief would have to be the extra innings win in Toronto.

You think Papelbon should close??

I think Papelbon will close until July if Foulke can't return to form. I don't think he should close, but I think he's the best option if Foulke craps out. And if that happens, without Wells, Arroyo is the obvious #5 starter.

Didn't Timlin do a pretty good job last year filling in for Foulke? I would rather let Pap develop in the starting rotation than have him go one inning a night.

Timlin did a good job last year, not great by any means, but good. He's no longer closer material. He'll be 40 this year.

I understand wanting Papelbon in the rotation, and that will come in time. But until the closer situation is figured out Papelbon is the defacto Foulke backup plan (until Hansen).

Plus Timlin needs to start innings, he allows too many inherited runners to score to be your long-term closer.

It wouldn't be long-term...Hansen will be up by midseason.

That's kind of long-term if you are looking to win the division, though.

Milledge is so awesome! The Sox should definitely get him, considering we have Pedroia and Graffanino backing up Loretta:D
