Who is the last pitcher to come from the National League and dominate the AL? Pedro? I don't think Beckett is at Pedro status.

Schilling?? oh yeah he came in 2nd didn't he for 2004 Cy Young award??

....if I recall your very own Shawn Chacon did well when he came to the AL didn't he??

Posted

Last 'young' pitcher.

I like Chacon, but the jury is still out on him. I'm just saying, I'm not sold on Beckett because of all these young pitcher who come to the AL and don't do well.

Keep rationalizing. Beckett will be the best pitcher to switch teams this offseason, unless the Twins go apeshit and trade Santana, including the FA market.

Such as???

Bruce Chen has done well since coming over to the AL, Matt Clement made the all star game, Kevin Millwood did well coming over to the AL, David Wells had a good season....ok these guys aren't necessarily young....

but Dan Haren is....pretty good year for him and Josh Beckett is much more talented going along with a better track record and a World Series MVP.

....so who are we talking about??

Enjoy the blisters.

yeah Nolan Ryan's blisters early on in his career which had hurt it badly ;). And no just before you say, "oh duh dont compare him to Ryan". Nolan Ryan and several other hall of fame pitchers had to deal with blisters just like beckett is now. its something that can be corrected.

Good luck with Jaret Wright's target sign painted on his shoulder.

yep, i think that beckett will be fine, no sense arguing about it now, well see next year how well he does. he did fine in the 03 world series.

to me, I think this is as good of a #2 pitcher as we could have hoped to acquire this off-season. I'm sad that this is probably the end of Billy Mueller in Boston but Lowell is a gold glove player and a very good hitter when you don't take into account last season

After thinking about it for awhile, it's kinda amazing that we didn't have to give up any guys that have ever been productive for the big club to get 2 pretty damn good players but I am sorry to see Hanley go

I agree this is great trade no doubt about it, but my problem is he's never pitched 200 innings before, and the fans won't lik eit very much if he hits the DL twice due to blisters. I'm worried about how much he has in his arm but we shall see.

Each year he's pitched more games and pitch count. That's at least a positive sign.

Yeap. Looks that way as long as everyone passes a physical. Along with Lowell. Let's just hope Beckett can get that blister problem under control and also hope that this past season was just an off year for Lowell.

Blisters isn't a serious thing, his shoulder is the bigger problem, and thgat's not even major.(To Soxfan #1) He has 2 years left for 2 mill and same with Lowell except for 9 mill each year

Beckett gets arbitration each of the next 2 years. He'll get a raise from the $2.5M he made this year.

Hmmmm...

thats what i'm saying. Everyone is so convinced that they have a sure thing here, but fact of the matter is that hes just another one of those NL pitchers who hasnt proven anything in the AL yet. And correct me if im wrong, but dont a lot of Sox fans always rag on us because we have gone out and got a lot of NL pitchers lately??

Like seriously, Beckett doesnt have Nolan Ryan numbers, in fact he is only 7 games above .500 for his career, and all these SWox fans are pointing to him to be their Ace.

Just because all the pitchers who come over from the NL to your team suck doesn't mean they will suck for us....

I have already pointed out the seasons many pitchers had in the AL this season after coming over. It tends to be mostly Yankee pitchers who suck...

Kevin Brown

Javier Vazquez

Carl Pavano

Jaret Wright

....

meanwhile we brought Schilling, Wells, and Clement over while all had good seasons. (Schilling didn't but he did win a World Series on one foot and came in 2nd for the Cy Young)

Enjoy having to play against him for years to come.

If the Josh Beckett that you guys get is the same Josh Beckett that we saw in 04-05 it will be a pleasure. But if he is on the DL half as much as he's been the last 2 years we wont be facing him too much.

What does that have to do with anything?

I was just pointing out that success in the NL doesn't mean success in the AL, as the Yankees could tell you. Personally, I can't wait to see Beckett in Fenway...should be entertaining.

Arm problems killed him (again).

Pitchers of the caliber of Martinez or Beckett can adapt to any league. It's not like Beckett's been facing NL hitters for decades and has his comfort zone. He'll succeed in the AL.

Wells is an AL pitcher, sorry buddy. And as I recall, despite his great start, Clement was hardly reliable down the road.

All I was saying t=is that you guys are quick to jump on us when we get an NL pitcher, and say that hes gonna suck based on our luck the last few years, but here you guys go and get an injury-prone NL pitcher and make him out to be Cy Young all over again. thats all I was saying. It doesnt matter much to me, im pretty happy about this trade. because while, yes, there is a chance it works out great for you guys, there is also the chance that it turns out horribly.

Beckett could hit the DL once or twice next year, Lowell could have similiar difficulties next year to what he had this past year. And as I recall, Lowell couldnt hit the moon if you threw it at him. Also, while Lowell is playing 3rd for you guys, unless he starts at first, Youk will be rotting away another year in Pawtucket or on the bench.

I cant wait until the day next year where beckett is on the DL, Lowell is in an 0-22 slump, and Renteria is making errors left and right (much like last year) and you guys are saying "man, we should have never made this trade, now we're stuck with Renteria who cant catch the ball, Beckett who cant stay healthy, and Lowell who cant hit. I wish we still had Hanley"

So good luck with this one guys, as I said, it could potentially be a great deal for you guys, but it could just as easily be a nightmare. So dont put all of your money on this one yet.
