That's debatable.

I'd love to post all of the back pages covering Boston's numerous, epic chokes...but, even the internet has its limitations.

refresh my memory...how many teams have lost a 3-0 lead?

We lost a 3-0 lead in one year, you lost for 86 years. Unlike Sox fans who treat everything they see as the end of the world, Yankee fans see the big picture. Which is why a RBI in the 3rd is the same as an RBI in the 7th. Because we are a not a here and now group, unlike those of you who were looking to jump into the ocean when Aaron Boone hit his HR, or Bucky Dent hit his. That's also why when a long estbalished pitcher with us left in FA (Andy) we didn't badmouth him nor highlight his lowlights to rationalize things like some Sox fans did with Pedro

Granted, I don't want to read this whole thread but I have to say that I was mad that Pedro left for a little while but I'm very much over it and I don't remember ever badmouthing him. I still view him as my favorite pitcher in baseball, and have tremendous amounts of respect for his time in Boston. Hes one of the great pitchers of all time and I will still root for him when he plays anyone (except the Red Sox).

Though I can understand why Boston fans no longer care about the division...especially after you guys choked away a 5.5 game lead this year.

And, you choked away the division this year. No Denying it.

Schools in session kiddies, so take your seats and pay attention.

Today's lesson: Probability

Probability is the likelihood that a given outcome will occur. For our purposes, the outcome is winning a baseball game. Probabilities range from 0 to 1.

The Red Sox had a 5.5 game lead on August 10 of this year, with 49 games remaining on their schedule and 50 games remaining on the Yankee's schedule.

When the so called choke began, the Red Sox were winning 58.4% of their games. In terms of probablity, this means that there was a .584 probablity that they would win any given game. The Yankees had a .536 probablity of winning at the time. You are probably familiar with these numbers as they are listed as the PCT column in the standings.

The Red Sox won 29 of their 49 remaining games, which means that from August 10 through the end of the season, there was a .592 probablity that they would win. Please note that this marginally exceeds their performance from earlier in the season. In all fairness, let's just say that they maintained their level of production.

The Yankees won 35 of their 50, meaning that from August 10 through the end of the season, there was a .700 probablity that they would win. This vastly exceeds their production rate from earlier in the season.

A choke is when you collapse or fail to perform in a big moment. Neither of those things happened the last two months of the season. The Sox kept playing at the same rate as they did all year, while the Yankees went on a hot streak. It happens.

I know it makes you all warm and fuzzy to think of this as a choke after what happened last year, but you are wrong if you think it was one.

I understand your point but that said you cant just pick any random point in the season when they had a 5.5 game lead. The Red Sox did have a 5 game lead after the gem pitched by Schilling at Yankee Stadium (I believe that was Sept 10)5 game lead with 19 games left? Hmmmm I can also make the case that your making about this and that is the Red Sox just played better then the Yankees the final 4 games of the ALCS. One mans choke is another mans comeback.

I picked the 5.5 point because that is what was mentioned in the quote I used, and August 10 was the latest date that the lead was that big.

Thanks for making my point easier to prove. The lead after Schilling's game was 4 on Sept. 10. The Sox and Yanks both had 21 games left. Here's what happened........

Sox: 12-9, .571

Yanks: 16-5, .761

As for last year's playoffs, you go right ahead and call it a comeback all you want. But I'd bet money that if you are truly being honest that is not how you really feel.

No, not really. The fact of the matter is your saying that the Yankees played better then the Red Sox down the strech thus winning the division. The same arguement can be used in the 2004 ALCS games 4,5,6, and 7. Its just that simple. Its in the eye of the beholder. Also when you say the Yankees choked you are also saying the Red Sox didnt "win" that world series. You are saying the Yankees gave it to them. Cant have it both ways.

Congratulations on the comeback, you now have 6 titles. Boston is like the nerd from one of those Molly Ringwald movies who winds up with the one of the cheerleaders in school for one night and then tries to go brag about it to the school jock who's been nailing the entire squad since he was a freshman.

I love all this talk about....we won the division and crap....did you or did you not finish with the same record as we did this season??? You won the "tie-breaker." Now THAT is something to cheer for.

Those who like to say we got swept in the playoffs....yeah well at least we were beaten by the team that won the World Series and made the Angels look silly...who in turn....made your MVP look silly.

Three possible scenarios: Both teams play well, both teams play poorly, one plays well while the other plays poorly. In the first case, then one team won and the other just lost. In the second, one team is handed a victory while the other choked. In the third, one team wins while the other chokes. That was easy enough.

Personally, I don't think the Yankees totally choked, nor do I think the Sox totally won it, but there were elements of both in those last four games.

Only a Red Sox fan thinks that a team playing well enough to win the tiebreaker from early success isn't the same as winning it in some sort of dramatic fashion. a win in Arpil counts as much as a win in September. Just like a HR in the 3rd counts as much as one in the 7th.

You mean these elements....

Yes, I believe those WOULD be the so called "Elements" that lost them the world series. Come on, stop making an excuse for the biggest choke in Sports History :thumbdown

I'd rather lose for 86 years than make the biggest choke in sports history happen, lol, you do have a point though, but still CHOKE!!!

I have to say that I obviously wasn't around for all 86 years. That victory was clearly more enjoyable then any of the Yankee World Series wins. The reason was because of the buildup and how amazing the fans are. The city of Boston was a HUGE party for that parade and I'll never forget it. Deffinitly a feeling no Yankee fan could ever have no matter how much they will disagree with me. They only wish they could have a taste of what we enjoyed so much. Completely washed away all tragedies Red Sox Nation had encountered for so long. One of the greatest moments in sports history was that season and certainly those playoffs by giving the self proclaimed "greatest team in sports history" the biggest collapse in sports history.

You're right, we lost our virginity a long time ago.

I cant disagree. we choked big time in 2004. but about those 86 years... :D

Yeah we won a World Series before you were born so we lost it a long time ago as well. Were you referring to real virginity cause I lost mine to your mother a long time ago...and now you're here....living in a large basement if I'm not mistaken

Thats your loss. I got a pretty big basement.
