I just want an answer to who you like better to start the bulk of the games at 1rst base. Maybe it's just me but I think Olerud by far is the better player.

im thinking moreso Olerud, millar started it seemed at first to turn things around in beginning of june when he had 2 homeruns in the same game, but since then his average has been slumping to now .265, along with him going hitless for past several game, tho he has been robbed from orioles and rangers players doing web gem plays to catch the ball

I'd take Olerud or Papi over Millar, anyday. It's really another Moneyball[/b] theory. To put it simply, you're trying to get the best bat in the lineup because for instance, it's not likely that your first baseman is going to cost you many runs if he's an average fielder.

It's like saying that we have Albert Pujols hitting DH... now who do you want in the spot at first? Papi, Olerud, or Millar? (Correct answer: Papi) You have to get the best bat out there and with the Red Sox right now that means forgetting the loyalty Francona has with Millar and get Olerud out there.

I wasn't aware that Olerud could not play every game. I still believe that he should be playing a lot more than Millar. Millar is killing this team offensively and the goofy Texan comes up all the time during critical situations.

I think Millar is just in a slump right now, I mean he just had twins- I'm a twin and my parents said that we were always crying. So for now Olerud, but once Millar starts to get out of this awful slump, put him in there.

I beg to differ. A first basman can cost you lots of runs. Example: How many times have you seen a shot donw the right field line, Millar his bellyflop dive in vain to try and catch it, a guy rolls into second in scoring positon and you sit there thinking damn Olderdude would have got that.

How many times have you seen someone need to rush a throw from the left side of the infield and instead of doing the right thing and coming off the bag and trying to do a swipe tag, acrobat Millar thinks he can stretch enough to get the ball and stays on the bag. The ball goes by him ends up in the stands a guy once again rolls into second base in scoring position.

How many times have we seen a weak nubber on the infield grass that the first baseman plays, the runner is sprinting down the first baseline the pitcher running to the bag to cover. The natural play is to flip to the pitcher, but Millar in his constant state of being stupid, tries to make a dive tag at the runner, misses and a guy is now on base.

The first baseman plays a key role in the defensive part of the game and Millar playing there is a constant liability on the field which is why Olerude should play as often as he can. Not to mention Millar can't hit either.

olerud had surgery from his injury he had during the yanks/sox playoffs in october. i believe its how come he has to wear that batting helmet while playing defense

Olerud's done that since college ball when he was hit in the head and given a concussion by a line drive.

Yes but he can't play every single day.

Every other day is better than every 4th or 5th day.

I don't think Olerud is the answer playing everyday. I agree with Schillingis thenatural and let Ortiz start at first and double switch him to DH later and let Olerud play first. Big Papi has shown some flash at first and may not be as bad as people think. Then they are free to deal Millar.

He isnt a clutch hitter like milar is

Olerud is hitting .462 with runners in scoring position, Millar is .239. With two outs, Olerud is .529 and Millar is .205. Care to try again?

Olerud's stats are very close to his career numbers, so I don't think they are an aberration due to a small number of at-bats. Stats are available at mlb.com, find the player, click splits.
