According to ESPN Kevin Millar is "unhappy with his role" with the Boston Red Sox and wants to be traded and Theo is apparently shooping him around.

My only problem is what the hell is he unhappy with, he's starting anf only being taken out late in games because he has no defense, why in the hell does he want to be traded?

Sizzlin, can you get a link or something on this story? Not that I doubt your sources, but it seems so preposterous that I'd like to see the context in what it was said.

If this is really true, what more could the Sox do? They stuck with him all through last year until he snapped out of his funk and have done the same this year. Outside of his reduced playing time in NL opponents ball parks and being taken out for Olerud for defense late in games, I can't think of what could he possibly be unhappy about. And if that's what he's bitching about, well then let him go honor the contract with Japan that he would have been stuck with had the Red Sox organization not gone out of their way to get him out of it and bring him here.

I don't know if that can be right. According to the Globe's Gordon Edes, even with PawSox first baseman Roberto Petagine's great numbers in June (.370, 6 HR, 21 RBI), they are still quoted as saying "but the Sox have no room for him (Petagine)." That's got to mean that Millar is going nowhere anytime soon, and that he is fine with his playing time.... why wouldn't he be?

If you want to talk rumors, what about Bill Mueller or Jay Payton for a reliever? Payton is unhappy about his playing time and say a guy like oh.... KAPLER could be back. As far as Mueller goes, the guy's contract ends at the end of the year and Youk has shown signs that he's ready to step in.

I don't know if this helps, but I also saw this on ESPN this morning. Kevin Millar's unhappy with his role.

Holy everloving s***. I have to sound off on this because Kevin's been getting way TOO MUCH plating time considering how putrid his play has been this season. All of a sudden he's unhappy? Send the fat ass packing! I'm all for trading this guy. If he's complaining about his playing time, that takes the ONLY good thing about Kevin Millar-- his clubhouse presence -- away from him.

I don't care what they get for him. If they can get someone to take on his gigantic mouth, mediocre contract, and putrid baseball abilities, take it before they change their minds!

I'd be perfectly satisfied with a Youkilis/Olerud platoon at first, with the occasional David Ortiz thrown in for good measure.

Trade Kevin Millar now!

I say let him go cause the right side of our infield is brutal BUT this could be a problem. Theo will have to go get another 1st baseman becasue Olerud can't play all the time...he is too old.

I could almost see this coming though cause he looked annoyed the past couple days but he stinks and he will be the first to tell you. The biggest problem is everyone likes him. The whole team is friends with Millar and that may effect team chemistry although I hope they will remain professionals and go about there business anyways.

If this goes down we need bullpen help and a 1st baseman....

I think we should talk to Milwaukee...try to get Lyle Overbay and Ricky Bottalico from them. Mantei is probably done which means Bottalico could fill in for him and Overbay can take over for Millar. Perhaps we could trade Millar and someone like Shoppach with another lesser prospect.

Not a bad idea. I read somewhere awhile back that Bottalico would "give his left arm" to pitch for the Red Sox. Overbay would give the Sox an improved bat over Millar, but I fear this would make them a little too lefthanded? THey'd have really only one righthanded threat (Ramirez) leaving them prone to lefty specialists late in games. OF course, nobody's afraid to go right after Millar right now, so it would be an improvement either way.

Milwaukee's got a very bright future ahead, with guys like Weeks, Hardy, and Fielder on the verge of becoming everyday major leaguers. Adding a good catching prospect like Shoppach (who calls a great game, a good thing for a young pitching staff) and a vet like Millar who could play right field in a pinch could help.

I would imagine the Red Sox would have to give up one more player, I just hope it isn't a Declarman/Papelbon/Lester/Ramirez type talent.

Worth researching at least. And I KNOW I've been lambasted in the past for even suggesting this, but David Ortiz COULD play first place every day and not hurt this team, I honestly believe that-- so if Millar has to be traded without getting a replacement first baseman, it won't be the end of the world. Then Payton could take over primary DH/OF duties (giving guys like Ramirez, Damon, and Nixon days off by DHing them and he could play a LOT more often. I'd much rather see Payton in the lineup than Millar any given day. I just think he does a lot more things that help you win ballgames.

What is management doing to the team???? Nothing yet. Looks like the same roster to me besides the backups, right??

What they need to do is upgrade....the right side of the infield is horrible. Our 2B and 1B starters have combined for:

.247 BA / 10 HR / 59 RBI / 132 SO / .343 OBP and it seems like balls are always getting through the right side.

yay this team is going right to hell. Millar is gonna be gone, Schilling is a f***ing releiver, Bellhorn sucks, mantei is gone for the season, foulke for the next month. yay.

Maybe Roberto Petagine would get called up? that would be awesome.

None of them have fit into the equation for our success thus far so who cares.

Foulke and Mantei have a combined 6.36 ERA, Schilling hasn't pitched yet, Bellhorn is batting .222 and Millar has hit HRs in only 3 games this year (only one of them meant anything)

That's true. I really doubt this team will miss Foulke, Mantei, or Millar terribly because they haven't contributed a damn thing to the success of the team. Imagine if this team had a lights out closer and a first baseman who could hit and/or field? We'd be walking away with the division.

Good riddance Kevin, hope the door hits you on the ass on your way out.

Read Damon's comments in today's Globe Red Sox notebook. He is adament about Millar (and Bellhorn) and what he feels management is doing the team. Quite interesting.

Saw these too. He's partially right. The team is four games up and yet it still feels like we're just treading water.

Regarding possible destinations for Millar, I believe he'd rather stay in the AL since he is probably a good candidate for a 1B/DH platoon on another team. Hell, if he's really being as whiny as these reports say, send him to Tampa Bay. Maybe Pinella can use him as a starting pitcher.

Didn't Colorado say that they might be interested in trading Helton to free up some salary space? This would be a good option.
Posted
If we wanted Helton we would have to give our 1-2-3-our whole farm system.

Not to mention the fact that Helton has been horrifically inconsistent the first half of the season. Last time I ever waste a fantasy baseball pick on his ass.

lol dont worry it wont last for the rest of his career

This whole thing is so stupid. I don't understand what place Damon has coming in and questioning having Schilling in the bullpen, over Timlin, embree, Arroyo. Who cares? i haven't even heard Timlin and Arroyo wanting the CP position. Is this something they covet? Is this like high school, and the hottest girl just broke up with her stud boyfriend? I mean come on! Its as if all these players were just hoping to become a closer, when, in fact, I have heard nothing of the sort.

If Millar is going to bitch and moan about occasionally backing up Olerud, he can get traded immediately for all I care. He said earlier in the season that backing up olerud was different from backing up Doug Mientkeiwz because he grew up idolizing Olerud and that Olerud is a great hitter, etc., so where is the respect now? Does Millar TRULY believe that the Red Sox will be happy with a whining first baseman with less than 6 homeruns so far this year? It seems to me that he's lucky to be on such a great club and that he should be kissing ass to stay there.

If Foulke wins that game in Texas then all this stuff is okay. It was like the lid on the pot just blew off and now everyone who has any grievence is just letting it fly. I guess this kind of stuff always comes up around trade deadline time, but it pisses me off to see Damon being so outspoken. so maybe it takes Schilling 50 pitches to get ready... so what. Foulke couldn't go in in the 6th inning and finish out a game. schilling can. He could potentially close games from the 7th inning on whereas Foulke couldn't deal with more than 20 pitches.

these guys just need to shut up and play ball.

Kevin Millar is very simply WAY OUT OF LINE here. The Red Sox have been TOO patient with him. The only qualified first baseman who has fewer homeruns than Kevin Millar is Sean Casey. The only two who have lower OPS: Phil Nevin and Eric Hinske, both of which have higher slugging percentages. Kevin Millar isn't even in the top 20 offensive first baseman in the big leagues. For a team who considers themselves a contender, they're giving away at bats by having someone so awful hit so often. Kevin Millar should be greatful that he's still allowed to wear the uniform, let alone all those ABs they waste on him.

You'd never know that the Sox were a season high 4 games in first place by reading talksox or the newspapers. Jeeeeeeeeez people. Calm down.

There is no reason to hate our players as much as you guys do.

Let's see, people you all would hate if they saved the world.

Kevin Millar

Keith Foulke

Allen Embree

Matt Mantia

Mark Bellhorn

And yet scrubs/backups like Youkilis, Jay Payton, Kapler and Dave Roberts you all love.

I can't remember where I heard it or read it, but someone said the other day "It seems the Red Sox players have more fun than their fans do."

So true. :thumbdown

Hey I'm a Red Sox fan, I'm born to bitch.

Anyways Millar needs to shut his stupid mouth and so does Damon. Trade Millar and his punk ass I agree with who ever said they have been to patient with him.

4 games up in the AL East means absolutly NOTHING....you have to act like you are 10 games out....thats the best way to approach the situation...if you start getting comfortable being in 1st...get ready cause it will close up before you can blink...

I refuse to be alright with the status of the Red Sox because it can only be better and the following players need to step up there game to be apart of it:

Bellhorn

Millar

Foulke

Mantei

Embree

This is a championship team that needs championship players. Baseball players come and go but life with the Red Sox moves on. If you lose that mentallity or the players dont live up to there part and start bitching about the management or coaching moves....time to move on. Shut up and play the game whatever your roll may be.
