Foulke to return to Boston

July 5, 2005

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Red Sox closer Keith Foulke will leave the team and return to Boston to determine if a knee problem is the cause of his struggles. The disabled list is a possibility, manager Terry Francona said. "We think there's a chance, but we want to let it run it's course,'' Francona said before Tuesday night's game against the Texas Rangers. "I know he's shouldering a lot of responsibility and it's very difficult for him. He will take the ball every time, so I want to try to help him out.'' Foulke took the loss on Monday night when the Rangers scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to beat Boston 6-5. It was his fourth blown save of the season and his second in a week.

Foulke was 5-3 with 32 saves and a 2.17 ERA in his first season for the Red Sox last year, closing out all four games when Boston swept St. Louis for its first World Series title since 1918. But this year he is 5-5 with a 6.23 ERA and 15 saves this season. After being booed off the field at Fenway Park following a ninth-inning grand slam last week, he said, "I've always said the hardest thing is to come in here and face my teammates (rather) than worry about Johnny from Burger King booing me.'' Foulke will fly to Boston on Wednesday and have MRI exams on both knees, Francona said.

"I've had extensive talks with him, talks with (general manager Theo Epstein), talks with our medical people,'' Francona said. "This is a tough one. We're having a tough time. He's battling the knee. He feels responsible to pitch, but he's not pitching with the effectiveness we want or need.''

I think that's the right move. He's still a talent that we have to work with no matter what. Might as well figure out what the hell is wrong with him instead of sending him out every night hoping he turns it around.

Good, get foulky checked out, cuz something is definately wrong there. there is no way he can be this bad after the offseason and the first half....

Looks like they pulled the hole... "Foulke has a nagging injury that we are going to take a look at". This will get him on the DL so he can find his game (where ever he lost it).

I think it's a good move. Maybe it will all work out by the play-offs.

It makes you wonder what took so long. If it is his knee or knees I wouldn't hold out hope he'd be back this year.

I think that this might be a case where whatever the injury is that is nagging him is having more effect on him mentally than physically. It's tough to throw all of your pitches if you are worried about what your knee is going to do when you stride towards home plate. It can really screw up one's mechanics.

I imagine that the team waited so long because they thought he might simply get his confidence (in his knee or whatever is nagging him) back without taking time off. He had a nice run after he met with the special consultant a few weeks back to go over his mechanics which suggests to me that he's physically sound enough to pitch but that he's worried about something else happening (like a tiny injury turning into a big one.)

Well it was Tito's decision to have the knees checked out. And I think it's just convenient that his knee would bother him now. He's pitched with this problem for years now. It's an excuse.

Foulke had 2 blown saves in less than one week. After the first blown save Tito told reporters that Foulke is a lot healthier today, than he was all of last year.

Yet, shortly after the second blown save we "suddenly and mysteriously" started to hear about knee issues!

I do NOT believe all this crap!

I believe Theo has decided to get rid of Foulke, and this is just a marketing scheme.

The message that Theo wants to deliver to other teams is: " Foulke is an excellent closer, the reason he has not performed well is because he has minor knee issues. So come on and grab him"

Disabled my @$$. He just needs to get his head together.

What they need to do on practice days is put problem pitchers on the mound facing live batters. This way they can shake some of the the cobwebs out without having the game on the line, and it will allow for some more effective batting practice by simulating a game situation.

um, i dunno if you guys noticed, but foulkes mechanics have been way out of the usual. when he threw his hand used to be close to his shoulder and his back knee bent. but this year his hand is back and he leans backward without the knee bending. I think it is because he was used so much in the postseason that it screwed with his mechanics.

Schilling on deck to replace Foulke as closer

The Red Sox have found a replacement for closer Keith Foulke.

His name is Curt Schilling, the team's ace right-hander.

During his weekly appearance on the WEEI radio show “Dale and Holley,” this afternoon, Sox manager Terry Francona said Schilling will take the first step toward replacing Foulke by pitching out of the bullpen tomorrow in Pawtucket.

Schilling was one of the team's heroes last year, winning 21 games as a starter and helping to lead the Red Sox to the team's first World Series Championship in 86 years.
