Hernandez would only start(you wouldnt replace him for Arroyo or Wakefield)

Zito(if he goes anywhere) is going to the O's

Lilly might be your best shot

Burnett is un touchable right now

Unless Ted Lilly gets traded, he will have a bad year (Reacord wise). Lilly is a guy who can give the Red Sox a Comfortable 3rd starter , have Clement move down a notch, and Arroyo from the Pen. But, if Epstien knew he could get Lilly, you would of heard talks about it already.

Uhh, no they wouldnt. What makes you think Arroyo is better than Lilly?

Lilly has more Wins, More SO, More Innings, Gave up less Runs, And he has better stuff.

I'm inclined to believe that it would be Arroyo in the 'pen. Lilly is a proven starter, and Wakefield deserves to start. Arroyo showed flashed of brilliance last year, but he hasn't shown yet that he can be a consistent starter OVER AN ENTIRE SEASON.

As of right now I don't think the Sox are in bad shape but if we could land Sheets or Burnett...that would be great.

I voted yes, like Gertie said, pitching isnt needed, but it would be great to add more. I think if anything it would be a minor acquisition, nothing that big. I really like Lilly, maybe if we could get him that would be good. We would actually have 2 quality LHPs too for the first time in like a while. Its a win/win situation. Our pitching is fine how it is, but it could be better. Why not try to get it better if thye have the rescources to do it?

I think we should concetrate on a catcher before going after an extra pitcher. Our pitching isnt as good as some other clubs, obviously, but we can deal with that. We just need to plug holes right now.

I read that Sheets actually isn't a free agent until 2006. They want to try to get a one year deal with him now and sign him to an extension in the spring.

Here's something I don't understand. Sheets and Pavano are about the same age and both had break out seasons last year. Why is Pavano such an overpaid stiff, and Sheets will be our savior?
Posted
Sheets had his breakout year when a pitcher is supposed to have his brekaout year, age 25. Look at his K/Control numbers! 264 K's, 32 walks. 8.25 K/BB, thats Pedroesque!
Posted
I think everyone agrees that Sheets is a better pitcher right now, and will have a better career overall than Pavano. He has tremendous stuff, which would have translated to even better numbers if he was on a better team where he didn't have to basicaly do everything. Pavano is good, and I wish the Sox had picked him up, but he's a little older, and just doesn't have Sheets' talent, plain and simple.

Sheets was only 25 last season while Pavano was 28. Sheets has much better raw stuff that Pavano cannot match (he doesn't throw 95-98 like Sheets and doesn't have a hammer curveball). Combine that with the amazing raw stats that BSR provided and you have an incredible pitcher, while Pavano is merely a good pitcher.

I voted yes, because I believe Matt Clement is a good replacement for Lowe, and Wells is a #3 starter at best, the Red Sox could really use a #2 type pitcher to replace Pedro. If they can do that, I think they'd be improved over last year. As it stands right now...

Schilling = Schilling

Wells

Clement > Lowe

Wakefield = Wakefield

Arroyo = Arroyo

It's worse than the 2004 staff because they don't have that guaranteed #2 guy. If the Red Sox could somehow obtain a #2 pitcher equal to Martinez:

Schilling = Schilling

(new #2) = Pedro

Clement > Lowe

Wells > Arroyo

Wakefield = Wakefield.

That would be a much improved rotation, and a good idea.

So I say (long story short) if the Red Sox can get a #2 pitcher, they should do it. If not, they can stay with what they've got.

"Wells

Wells, in my opinion, can easily go 15-10 or 16-9. So he should be able to cover Pedro's spot for a year or two if he stays healthy.

Yes, Pedro is the better/younger/slightly less injury prone pitcher. But it's hardly night and day. I'd say Wells

Just curious, what makes you think you guys will get Sheets?

I dont think anybody said the Red Sox could or would get him. In fact, somewhere, Doug Melvin went on record as saying basically that Sheets was untouchable at this point.

The Sox should make a run at Wade Miller. He was just non-tendered by the Astros. Great stuff, but has a tendency to get wild and is injury prone.

Wait, I take that back. Forget Wade Miller.

Too risky.
