I want Romero, Wagner and Burnett by July 31st. THAT would be the most remarkable trade deadline I could possibly imagine and I wouldn't put it past Theo to make it happen. I'd be okay with losing a few prospects, Arroyo, Mueller and Millar to make that happen.

If by "makes no sense" you mean its infesible, that could be. But if you were building a good team, you would want both; they're not mutually exclusive positions or players.

well we are going to know in about a week what our pitching staff will look like....damn this anticipation

ino this sucks. i think theo want make any trades till the end of next week, unless nesecary

I hear ya. But Romero has only 2 career saves. I don't see anyone on the sox who could potentially take over as closerat the highest level (a la Foulke, Gagne, Mariano, Wagner) when Curt comes back, Henry said they would be spending the loot this year. If Wagner is possible, I say get him. If Romero is possible, I say get him too. In fact, if we couldn't get Burnett I could see getting both of those guys as a comparable upgrade.

ur right romero is not a closer. hes a good setup man. i dont think curts going to be startind for a while and when he does timlin can fill in fine

getting wagner would cost us 1 maybe 2 important prospects

There are only a few big name prospects I would label 'untouchable', given the money this team has. I don't know enough about the lower levels (A, short-season A) but Paplebon, Hanley, Pedroia and maybe Lester. Are there ones that I'm missing there? Schoppach can go for all I care, I'm sure he'll be good but we have catchers (albeit aging ones). I'm confident we will be able to find good values from MLB ready players and free agents in the next few years so we won't need THAT much from the minor league system. If I had to choose, it would be Paplebon, Hanley and Pedroia as hands off, the rest are negotiable. Am I missing someone?

I'd put Anibal Sanchez, Jon Lester, Manny Declarmen, and Craig Hansen on that list. They will be a part of the future of this team.

I didn't say Hansen because he hasn't yet officially put on any uniform. If we're including this year's draft picks I would obviously say Hansen and Ellsbury.

espn's buster olney said anibal sanchez might be include with arroyo for burnett

They are similar pitchers in terms of stuff. Righty fire-ballers who get a lot of K's. And since A.J. is a proven commodity, I could live with that trade. But I'll be uspet to see Sanchez go if that happens. He's got a very high ceiling.

If we get Burnett to a contract extention, then it will be ok.

According to the Palm Beach Post, Red Sox are in the lead for Burnett. Apparently they would be willing to give up Arroyo and Anibal Sanchez. I think that's a little much seeing as I think Anibal will be a stud in a couple of years.

i still think the best possibility is the three way trade with the marlins, sox and twins. the twins lost trying to get joe randa so there only option left might be mueller. if the sox could get loshe in the deal, i think the marlins might think about just arroyo and loshe(whos only 26).

ahem, good stuff right here, updated hot headline on the miami herlad.com

Burnett trade to O's is dead

It was back to the drawing board for the Marlins, whose proposed trade with the Baltimore Orioles is all but dead. For that matter, it's no longer certain they'll try to deal A.J. Burnett and Mike Lowell before the July 31 trade deadline, not with mounting questions surrounding the pitching staff. Dontrelle Willis' fortunes have taken a sudden nosedive, Josh Beckett's history with injuries leaves him suspect to make it through to the end of the season, and Ismael Valdez is joining the rotation after missing the entire season. Do the Marlins dare trade Burnett, one of their frontline starters, with those questions hanging over them? They are a team that has underperformed but was only 5 ? games back going into Saturday and clinging to postseason hope.

Marlins general manager Larry Beinfest wasn't saying Saturday after the Orioles worked out a trade with the Padres, sending pitcher Sidney Ponson to San Diego for first baseman Phil Nevin. That deal, which requires Nevin to waive his no-trade clause, effectively would end all possibility of Lowell being packaged in a trade to Baltimore with Burnett. The Orioles would have no place to play Lowell and, according to reports out of Baltimore, they also have lost their enthusiasm for Burnett. The Marlins still could work out a trade involving Burnett, with the Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox and Toronto Blue Jays looming as the most likely destinations for the right-hander. But there's a chance the Marlins could scrap everything, hang on to Burnett for a possible stretch run and receive nothing more than draft picks for him when he becomes a free agent after the season.

One way or the other, Burnett, who is scheduled to start this afternoon against the Giants, is looking forward to the day he won't be hounded by the daily ''circus act'' of trade rumblings. And he said he wouldn't mind at all finishing out the season with the Marlins. ''This team could win it just as easily as any other team,'' Burnett said. The Marlins are going to need Willis to find a way out of his recent tailspin. Willis, who started out 12-3, has dropped his past three decisions, giving up almost as many runs (23) in those three outings as he had in his first 17 (26).

Willis said Saturday his arm feels fine, and he doesn't feel fatigued. ''I'm feeling good,'' Willis said. ``I'm just playing bad baseball.'' Manager Jack McKeon said he spoke with Willis on Saturday and was told the same thing. But Willis has a history of going into second-half swoons. ''The last two years, he's basically done the same thing for a short period of time,'' McKeon said. ``He gets out of whack.'' Beinfest said the organization isn't worried. ''We're not concerned with Dontrelle,'' Beinfest said. ``He's fine.'' The need for a veteran reliever might not be so great, either, when right-hander Antonio Alfonseca returns from the disabled list. That is more than likely to happen Tuesday, when the Marlins open a homestand against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

''That's a big addition for us,'' Beinfest said. As for Lowell, other teams have expressed little to no interest in the third baseman because of his large contract and poor offensive numbers this season. Lowell said he can understand the Marlins' desire to trade him. He is hitting .230 with five home runs but has started to show signs of breaking out. He was robbed of two base hits Friday on outstanding defensive plays and hit his first home run this season on the road. ''They're scared I'm going to hit .230 for the next two years, and I'm a financial liability,'' Lowell said. ``I think when you deal with a team in our market, that type of money will be a major hindrance to doing a lot of things.''

The Marlins reportedly had worked out a three-way trade with the Orioles and Texas Rangers, but it died when Baltimore agreed to a trade with San Diego after deciding it didn't want Lowell and wasn't certain it could sign Burnett to an extension. Florida would have sent Lowell and Burnett to Baltimore, which would have moved Ponson to the Rangers. Texas would have sent outfielder Richard Hidalgo to the Marlins.

Deals that possibly could still be worked out for Burnett include the White Sox offering pitching prospect Brandon McCarthy and right-handed starter Jose Contreras, and Boston likely would give up right-handed starter Bronson Arroyo and minor-league pitcher Anibel Sanchez.

does it really make sense to trade Arroyo and a top prospect for this injury prone, late 20's inconsistent starter who has said on numerous occasions that he would love to be reunited with his best friend Carl Pavano in the offseason (not that I want him, thats just what he said....because honestly I really dont, i'd rather ganble with Milwood or Schmidt). Arroyo has a lot of potential, he brings a lot of personality to that clubhouse, and hes publically said he didnt want to go anywhere...in fact there was a lot about it in the Boston papers this morning. So do Red Sox fans really think getting Burnett is worth it?

I really don't like the idea of trading any of our (Crespo designated) "Big Three" of Sanchez, Lester, Papelbon. That being said, I think Burnett's inconsistancy can be justified a little. '02 was his first full time starter year and he went through some growing pains while showing flashes of brilliance. '03 and '04 were shorted and disappointing due to real pains as he was injured. '05 is really his second full time healthy year and he is definitely improving. With his stuff the ceiling is still very high for him. Health is always a concern. He's at least made it to the show and performed, something that an injury could prevent any of those B3 from ever doing.

EDIT: Arroyo still has some ceiling room too. With the quality of his offspeed pitches, he has the potential to be a solid middle of the rotation starter. But right now, the book is out on him. He's having a lot of difficulty locating his FB, which max's in the very low 90's. That velocity will work in the bigs if you can locate it, but Bronson hasn't achieved full command of it yet. As long as his location is struggling, hitters are going to sit on the curve in the zone and hammer it.
