Tony Massarotti in today's Herald.

It should surprise no one, then, that Martinez approached Sox manager Terry Francona and pitching coach Dave Wallace before Tuesday night's game against the Devil Rays and asked where he stood in the Red Sox hierarchy. The Sox told him he was second. Then Martinez went out last night and pitched, appropriately, like No. 2, looking lethargic and disinterested while the Rays peppered him for 10 hits and stole three bases.

Maybe Martinez was protesting the decision. Maybe he did not want to be out there at all. Maybe that is why he insisted on remaining in the game after the fourth inning, when Francona and Wallace wanted to pull him.

Clearly Pedro has pitched more innings that in the past three years and the lack of any injury this year has not given him the rest he may have needed during the season.

But something else is going on. Beaten down by the MFY and now being named the number 2 starter seems to have Pedro down. No one wants to see him sitting in the dugout doing his Nomar impression, feeling like he's now longer appreciated or wanted. And if he is sulking it's clearly affecting his pitching.

This is not the way for him to make the Sox reward him with a new contract.

IF Pedro was sulking last night... that's not the kind of guy you want on the team anyway.

I don't think he was. From everything I've read about Pedro, he's too proud to be laying down to the Devil Rays and let them hit him all over the park.

I think it's more likely that he either a) had a bad game (what we're all hoping for) or b ) is tired (would be devastating).

I just don't think Pedro tanked the game because he was named #2. I have more respect for him than that.

Keep in mind that he should have won that game against the Yankees. After 7 innings, Pedro had pitched well enough for the Sox to win that game, and dipshit left him out there when he didn't have much left. I thought Pedro battled and did well against New York.

My respect for Pedro gets lower and lower with each complaint. I, for one, am sick of Pedro making the decisions on when he should come out. If he gets taken out too early, he throws a damn fit and the management is pressured to put him back in, which is what happened. We put Pedro back on the mound last night, and he gets lit up again. When Pedro is done, Pedro is done and he needs to recognize that, he is not super-human and has flaws just like every major league pitcher that pitches today. I am sick of Pedro acting like he is the only one that is playing the game when he is on the mound.

Pedro is past his prime and declining... is he worth resigning for what he wants?

that's what they said about clemens. guess how many games he won the next 2 seasons? 40 (maybe 41). he's also STILL pitching and is among the nl's top pitchers.

This was so eerie I almost peed my pants. :(

I wouldn't worry much about Pedro, mentally or physically. Sure he's had rough patch, but on the plus side it can't get much worse. A few things to note:

1) Does anyone else remember the whole 'Yankees are my daddy' bit? There is no way Pedro truly feels that way, and if we meet the MFY in the ALCS I guarantee he'll prove who is the real daddy.

2) This is the same Pedro who bitched about his contract status in the past, and now he says he wants to re- sign, and he has also had a pretty strong season to boot.

3) I feel Pedro was being honest when he said Schilling deserves the number one. Pedro respects Schilling and Schilling, Pedro, and I think the two will be able to get along with any rotation.

Don't worry about Pedro, he'll bring it when he needs it.

He isnt worth resigning the sox are most likely going to fall apart after this season anyway

yeah, the sox are going to fall apart.

here are some guaranteed sox next season:

damon, manny, ortiz, nixon, schilling, wakefield, foulke, mirabelli, youkilis. a few small pieces and that is a contending team.

you obviously know nothing about baseball and even less about the sox. how is pedro not worth resigning. i sure as hell don't mind #2 AL strikeout guy, only to be topped by the (soon to be) Cy young winner. 4th in WHIP, 3rd in BAA, 5th in IP, 6th in wins, 8th in era (after 4 horrible starts). pedro would be top 4 in era if it wasn't for his past 4 starts.

oh dear god, pedro is only a top 5 pitcher. better let him go before he becomes a top 10!

yes, he wasn't the sub 3 era pitcher we were used to. but i don't see why everyone is so quick to throw in the damn towel on this guy. he's pitched MORE innings than last year, his velocity is HIGHER than last year, he has MORE strikeouts than last year but he isn't as dominant. his ERA is higher. this is something pedro can fix, someone of his caliber just doesn't go from a 2.2 era pitcher to a 3.9 for no reason. he'll fix it.

if you don't sign him some other team will and make you look like baseballs biggest morons. how many hall of fame pitchers do we have to let go before we realize that 32 is not OLD for a pitcher.

We don't have to worry about Pedro coming into the Post Season without his A game. He wants to win the World Series just as bad as we want them to win if not more ($)! Maybe he was alittle down about being named the #2 starter in the rotation, but that will change when we are up 1-0. This will be his chance to show the world or should I say Nation that he's not washed up, but is still one of the best pitchers in Baseball history when it matters the most.

Also why would we want him to go anywhere else. If he doesn't sign with the Red Sox everyone knows he will be a MFY! And if that happens anyone who posts we shouldn't have signed him, must forgot that some of the best Red Sox's in History have gone on and won World Series with the MFY'is. I have no doubt in my mind that we will forget about his September performance once he steps on that mound!

THIS WILL BE THE LAST YEAR WE EVER SEE ANOTHER 1918 SIGN AGAIN!!!! GO SOX!!!!

No one is doubting that Pedro is still a fantastic pitcher. What we are doubting is a) Will he hold up after 200+IP next season? B) Is he worth the big-time contract when he could get 80-90% of the production from a Clement or Pavano, etc. for half the price?

I think not resigning Pedro would be a big mistake. Despite his recent slide, he's still a top pitcher, and the Sox # 2 (I respect what Arroyo's done, and I'd still pitch him second because of his drastically better numbers on the road, but Pedro's the second best pitcher we have).

I'm not worried about Pedro in the least. He's going to give all he's got throughout October and I believe that if he's used properly (cough, Francona, cough) he'll be invaluable to the Red Sox playoff push.

i'm just not sold on clement and i think pavano will get owned at fenway.

He says "the yankees are my daddy" and after a bad start at tapa he was crying... wtf is this.. is pedro ready for tommorows start against Anahiem??? i hope so we need the win... that just sux thathe said that  :(

Outstanding!!! Pedro pitched his heart out in Game 2 and showed everyone he is still a great pitcher. The K to end the 7th was a fitting end to a fantastic effort. He dug down deep and went out with something to prove and he delivered.

I'd like to say (and I'll say it more than once because it makes me happy) that Pedro hit 95 on the radar gun last night... in the seventh inning! Big big news, considering as far as I know that's as hard as Pedro's thrown in a long time.

He was very good last night, and good enough to get the win (which is all that's important).

pedro pitched much better than schilling. it was that misread by OC and manny that cost pedro some runs. it was a much better performance than we all think.

i knew pedro would come through. i love the i'll blow you away with my fastball or if i can't i'll take your head off with it attitude he brings to the plate. it's cocky, it's arrogant, it's dickheaded, it's awsome.

Pedro gave the Sox EVERYTHING you ask for in an ace pitcher. He battled hard, kept them in the game, and dialed it up when he needed to.

What an effort.

This is the Pedro we need if we're going to get anywhere in the playoffs.

Beautiful performance by Pete that was amazing he hit 96 once or twice which proves he can still pitch that fast but chooses not to to save his arm (or thats at least how I see it) which is a good choice.

I don't think Pedro is past his prime at all. I do think he is a crybaby though.

Not just this year, but in previous years as well, I've gotten a sense that when he is upset, he "throws 'em a few meatballs" to put the offense players in the position of having to work harder for a win.

I do think he is somewhat justified in being upset about lack of run support, especially the episode where he got 17 strikeouts and took a loss. But his infantile approach of not delivering maximum effort when he's in a bad mood cannot be justified.

If you ask me, he's gone. Already been replaced. Curt's here.

if pedro is gone, who do we use next year if we dont get another pitcher? and if pedro is gone, pedro will be a yankee, no if's and's or but's about it. someone already said in this thread, maybe another one, how we let go of clemens because we thought he was old and done. what happened? 2 years with the yanks he gets 40+ wins, and his 300th. pedro is a must sign in the off-season. and without him, we dont have the curt/pedro 1-2 punch anymore.

I totally agree that Pedro is a must-sign. If you take him out of the rotation, Schilling just isn't enough. Yeah, he can be a crybaby from time to time, but his numbers are too good when he's a man to let him go.
