I've also been hearing rumors that the yankees are making a run for Beltran. Is there any validity to this or is it just yankee fans being yankee fans? I see no reason for them to be going after year ANOTHER superstar other than to spite the sox. But if the mfy got him, imagine how much that would suck. :(

come on... we all know its a race between the sox and the mfy to get him. if we dont get him by the ASB, the mfy will get him. but i think we have the upper hand because we have much more talent available at the minor league level than the mfy

I don't agree with this at all, simply because I believe Damon was born to be a Red Sox. For heavens sake I still miss Hillenbrand, even though Mueller turned out to be the AL batting champ.

Anyway for those of you who haven't heard this rumor, there are bits and pieces in the Boston Globe.

Sources inside and outside the club said yesterday that the Sox are actively shopping the Korean righthander, with one major league scout insisting that, depending on the deal, the Sox would be willing to eat part of Kim's two-year, $10 million contract. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein, who was here with the Sox last night, declined comment, adhering to his policy of not discussing potential trades.

I don't mind dropping Kim for some hitting, but I don't want to give up Damon, even if Beltran is the superior CF.

That's why talk that the Sox would package Johnny Damon with either Derek Lowe or Kim for Beltran makes little sense, given the money those players are being paid. And, added one AL executive, "Damon didn't make a lot of friends with some of the stuff he said when he left Kansas City."

The only thing I'd be happy about is that we'd get a player the Yankees are actively pursuing.

The New York Yankees have been the most aggressive team in calling about Beltran, the executive said, adding that the Mets also called last week, along with the Seattle Mariners. The executive said he was not certain how much the Sox were involved in the pursuit of Beltran.

We'll see how it goes. Here's the whole article.

This bears mentioning as well. Nothing would give Georgie over there a bigger scare than having the Sox out bid HIM on a big ticket player. The look on his face (his dead face after succumbing to a heart attack) would be priceless!

He's on the trading block officially now:

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Let the bidding begin for Carlos Beltran.

Kansas City general manager Allard Baird, on the heels of a demoralizing doubleheader loss to Montreal, said Friday that he is ready to begin dismantling his team and build for 2005.

"This is a change," Baird told reporters.

Specifically, this means he is ready to take offers for Beltran, his switch-hitting center fielder who is one of just six players with at least three seasons of 100 runs, 100 RBI and 30 stolen bases.

Beltran, 26, will be eligible for free agency after this year and the Royals are determined to get as much for him as they can.

Baird said he has heard from clubs "on the East Coast and the West Coast" who might be interested in the 26-year-old Beltran, but refused to be specific.

"I think it's very unfair to the ballclubs I'm talking to on any player," he said. "If they want to share it, that's fine."

Teams known to have expressed interest include Anaheim, Boston and the New York Yankees.

There are certain to be others. Beltran last year become the first switch-hitter to bat over .300 while hitting more than 25 home runs and stealing more than 40 bases.

The AL player of the month in April, he went into Friday night's game hitting .270 with 12 home runs and 43 RBI.

Two weeks ago, Baird told clubs he would not consider dealing any of his players without giving the Royals a chance to get back in the AL Central race. They responded by winning six of 10. But the doubleheader loss to Montreal made them to a league-worst 21-36.

"I will listen at this point," he said.

"Am I disappointed? No question I'm disappointed. I still believe that this ballclub intact at the end of the season would be better than it is right now. But time is not on our side and we are behind the 8-ball, as we've talked about numerous times. And you can't be completely off the pool table, so to speak."

If he goes to the yankees...... ugh.

From ESPN insider:

Jun. 11 - While he didn't name him specifically, Royals GM Allard Baird implied on Friday that he is ready to listen to trade offers for Beltran as he looks to rebuild for 2005.

Baird is seeking young, inexpensive players who are major-league ready, which may rule out the Yankees, who covet Beltran but don't have the pieces to make a deal.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported last week that the Padres have had low-key discussions with the Royals in hopes of determining what it would take to land Beltran. The Padres have a deep minor league system, and could make Kansas City an attractive offer without putting the future of the team in jeopardy.

The Mets also had a scout in Kansas City in late May, and the Newark Star-Ledger suggests it might have been to check on Beltran, who makes $9 million this season and will be a free agent this winter.

They make no mention of the sox. They saw Mets, Yankees, Padres now.

In a Kansas City paper recently, they ran an article about Beltran's likely trading. Next to the picture they put the logo of every team interested in him. And underr all of this, they had a picture of him wearing a RED SOX HAT. I'd like to trust the Kansas City paper on this matter.

I don't realistically see him going to the sox. We have enough free agent trouble for next year as it is, so why take on another burden? As great as it would be to have "the next mickey mantle" on the team right now, I think we have some other concerns. (our outfield really isnt a weakness)

Also, it's not like Damon has really hurt us this year. He's on pace to knock in 100 runs (not bad for a leadoff hitter), he has great patience, and, other than his arm, he plays great center field. Of course we would love to add another superstar, but CF is not where we'd need it.
