Lemme know what you guys think. I'm not sure on my part but if they were to have one .... Who should it be?

personally i think Wakefield should be captain, he's been with the team the longest and he is still a good pitcher

Wake without a doubt.

A veteran who pitched his heart out last ALCS, does not deserve to be the goat of the series as he got us to game 7- different story.

Pedro is Pedro, Schilling is new and Manny is too emotional.

Ortiz, a huge effort but Timmy has been with the team the longest.

I've loved him for years- GO WAKEY!!!

I hope my other active fave, MILLAR!, comes through soon.

This team is already pulling my heartstrings and it is only May 2nd.

I think the whole idea of a captain in baseball is a bit overblown. I mean does Jeter really lead his team? But if the Sox were to name someone I'd go with Varitek. By example and his preparedness he's a leader and role model for all the players.

Christopher Trotman Nixon has been in the system since 1993. His fire and passion for the game (not to mention his great bat) lead the team through example. Everyone talks about the team mouth-piece, Kevin Millar, as a leader. He's not leader, he's the guy who blabs to the media, so they love him. Trot, Varitek and Wakefield are the ones who hold that team together.

You can't just make somebody Captain, a la Jeter. They have to step up on their own and become the leader like Mo did. I would agree with Tek being the go-to guy, but I don't think he'll be around much longer in Boston.

I would much rather they start a Kangaroo Court like they had in '86. If you started whacking players 50k for not running on a play, players will step in line.

Manny should be captain, he has really shown some major change these last months. He now is willing to defer five million dollars of his salary a year, to resign Pedro.

No captains whatsoever. It doesnt work in baseball. If a player wants to lead by example, I'm all for it. But forcing a person to be the leader, both on and off the field, is unfair to the players and to the fans. It also recognizes a player as the "best" or most well liked on a team, which is unfair to other players.

I dont think that is true because some people are born leaders an d can put any group of people into a mood of winning, doing that makes the team more into the game. You can have this skill but not be the most well liked player on the team

I say no. I think it does elevate a player above the others. Look at jeter. He sucks over there in New York, but he's the captain, and the captain is the best. Most people will name Jeter as their favorite yankee.

He's far from the best player, and I think it would only detract from a team's unity if one player is designated the "captain" per say. If someone wants to lead, they should do so on their own, and lead by example.

The natural leader of the team could be anyone. I think it should be nomar (remember him, he played for us last year and some years before, he was a decent hitter. People tend to have forgotten about him this year).

no see i dont see it that way.... maybe you can say that a captain might be the most liked on a team and i can see where you are coming from... but as for the best player always being the captain, i disagree with you.... The mets captain is John Franco and he's a good pitcher but he isnt the best player on the team.... to me a captain is someone you can look up to and go to if ur in trouble

Again, why do we want to be like the Yankees? What other teams in Major League Baseball have team captains? The Mets (John Franco)? The Rangers (ARod )! I've got a poll idea: Should we construct some sort of mock grave yard in the triangle next to the bullpen to "immortalize" all of the marginal players (except Babe, no one can argue that) who came through our system? Or how about: Should our home uniforms be changed to white with red pinstripes?

Look, even if a team has a captain they don't always have one every year just for the sake of having one. It "usually" happends when a guy is outstanding on the field, a career player with the team and/or an icon of the franchise who's name will almost always be associated with that franchise. Trot? Wake? Even my boy Varitek? None of these guys are captain material. If Clemens wasn't such a baby he could have qualified. Same with Mo if he played a full career and did it with the Sox.

Good point man, we don't want to be the yankees. But as far as the legends park or whatever, we have something maybe even worse. The Red Sox hall of fame commemerates anyone who basically ever played on the sox. It's like a shrine to the mediocre.

And as far as captaining goes, I dont see anyone fit on the sox to be a captain. There arent many people in baseball who can be both on and off the field leaders. Its a tough thing to do.

I think Tek is very qualified to be a captain and what do you know so does ESPN

Plus on the fact with wake and vtek they are both class acts off the field. I think it would be a toss up between the two. I like wake for the job cuz he's been with the sox so long but vtek is an everyday player that plays his heart out and doesnt complain

Hockey teams have captains, not baseball teams. Baseball is too much of an individual-minded sport to have a captain. Every out is batter vs pitcher, with very little outside forces affecting play. It's a lot different than other team sports where someone can be a unifying presence on the court, or the field, or the rink.

There should not be a captain of this team. Simply because there are so many great players and veterans, how can you choose one over the other?

Varitek should be captain. He's a great catcher and catcher is the basically the leader of the team even if he isn't captain. He decides pitches, shifts and many other things in the game.
