  1. It's always tough. The benefit of being a big-market team is offset by being surrounded by other big-market teams.
  2. Sure, I'd have made that trade. But the O's gave up 10x as much for Baz.
  3. Good Mexican food. Once I went down to Houston a few times, I could no longer enjoy local Mexican food.
  4. That seems to be a reasonable assumption, in most non-baseball matters at least.
  5. Or, how do we know the state wasn't named after him? Maybe he and and a fried were driving through, got in some trouble, and were referred to as the 'two utes'.
  6. BOS: Paredes & Alcantara HOU: K Campbell MIA: B Mathews That's the one I would do, and might make some sense. The BTV ratings seem way off. I see no way that Ryan is a 52, and Alcantara is only a 10. That said, while I don't like Matthews, that doesn't mean Miami might not like him. And a #1/28 with a #68 ranking is at least a good start towards Alcantara. I also don't think Houston would trade both Matthews & Paredes for Campbell. But again, at a minimum, it is a good start. I think it would cost the RS a bit more, but not major pieces. Maybe one of those 8/9/10 SPs that we have.
  7. How do you think UtahSox wound up in Utah?
  8. But you didn't really have a point. Correct if I'm wrong, but I believe you said that we are the only AL team not to sign a FA. But to make that correct, you have to include maybe 10 teams that signed low-level FAs that are little more than waiver-bait.
  9. The author was a little weak on details. He mentioned Senga, but I think there is a -0- chance the RS would be interested in him. He costs real money and might not be as good as some of our current guys. As I've said before, I would do Duran for Tong + Vientos. Bello might be a good addition to that deal. Theoretically, we might have a few SPs that might supply 70-80% of Bello supplies. But the NYMs have to kick in something serious. For Duran + Bello, the opening bid is McLean + Vientos, and would likely need to include Benge or Jett Williams.
  10. Matthews has a gazillion minor league strikeouts.
  11. One of the reasons I don't get too far into the weeds in the off-season. This is pretty much fantasy BB for us. We don't have any idea what the FO is looking at.
  12. I'm not sure that MLB has as much of an interest in payroll caps as the fans. The poor teams don't want a high floor. The rich teams don't want a low ceiling. The $400M in taxes funds different programs. And the 110% tax that DD will have to pay for Realmuto at least nominally reins in some spending.
  13. How many teams have acquired a player better than Gray? How many teams have acquired two players as good as Gray + Contreras?
  14. If Duran is not a starting outfielder, then he has little value. But I'd even go so far to suggest that other teams will see him as a CF, enhancing his value even more.
  15. I think he'll be out there for a while. While some fans think he's redeemed himself because of the better hitting, I'm thinking the injury might've hurt him more than the hitting helped. I'm wondering if he'd accept some version of the $80M ($64M CBT) that he opted out of, with some enhancements to make it look better from his side. Add some salary, with more deferrals, maybe a 3rd year, and maybe an opt-out after two years. IOW, give him a $100M/4 dressed up to look like $150M/5.
  16. Then you are SOL. There is no single player that will put you over the top. You need 26 players to win in the regular season, and usually with 5 good SPs. To win in the post-season, you need two aces, or close to it. The HR thing? Of the top-15 HR hitters over the past 5 years, only one has a WS ring.
  17. Orioles-Alonso & Helsley The BJs add Cease, Ponce +? Mariners re-signed Naylor, Grisham took the NYY QO, the Tigers retained Finnegan & Torres So only two of the AL teams have added new help.
  18. I agree 100%. With the recency factor in mind, I assume a good 2026 for Suarez, meaning that Suarez is really only a one-year risk. Anything more than two years becomes risky for both Bregman and Marte. While anything can happen, age for hitters is fairly unforgiving.
  19. I'm flexible on these matters, but the idea that winning in 2026 is somehow uniquely better than winning in any other year, is not a concept I understand. In fact, I'd bet that we have a better shot at a WS in 2027 than we do in 2026. If there were under-over futures markets, I'd make a decent-sized wager we'll have a better record in '27 than '26. Tolle, Early, Mayer, probably Campbell, and maybe Witherspoon, should be ensconced in our lineup by then. So why 2026?
  20. Whether Henry spent or not doesn't really impact the fact that you still want to be 10% better.
  21. I have no idea of how to process that. IMO, 2027 is just as much here and now as 2026. And how does one not think about the future? Would you trade 6 years of Anthony for one year of Skubal? There is little doubt that Skubal will out-perform Anthony in 2026, so I assume you'd make that trade?
  22. Marte's window is likely two years. But using my example, would you want Marte's 6 years, or a player with 2% less talent that was, say 29 years old? That's how these decision are and should be made.
  23. It has nothing to do with the market. If you can be 2% better for 5 years, or 2% better for one year, you pick 5 years every time. Same as in real life.
  24. It's been like that at most of my jobs. I always did my job quietly and efficiently. That seemed logical to me. After some years, I realized some people got attached to performance. I didn't like doing it, and still never got used to doing it, but it got to the point where I felt like a display of emotion was necessary for every assignment. The quicker I could get a job finished, the less valued the product would be. But if I could roll my eyes, curse under my breath, and watch the RS game for two hours, someone would pat me on the back and tell me what a great job I was doing. /end of rant/
  25. It's impossible to know without knowing all the intricacies. While I favor keeping Rafaela, all three of our outfielders are discussion-worthy. And while all three are worthy of some type of #2, it's also possible that has his sights on a #1. Or a high-ceiling prospect. Or he could be looking for a 2B or 3B. Or might want a #3 along with a 2B/3B. You could be inside the FO and not really know which direction this is going. Heck, Pitt, Cincy, or others might have a top prospect that Breslow loves, and is willing to play the long game. Seth Hernandez for Abreu?
