  1. Isnt Fogel McLovin?
  2. The Red Sox 3rd baseman is TBD. Lot of moving parts, and we need the spring to see if prospects force their way on, Devers health, any other injuries... There is simply no reason to make a final decision right now. My hunch is our 3b next year is going to be Devers some of the time, Bregman some of the time, maybe Christian Campbell some of the time, maybe another dude some of the time. But I think its fluid.
  3. Agreed. I do wish that there was only an opt out after year 2 , but I agree with you that its not a deal breaker or to fret about that he has an opt out after each year
  4. The RS upcoming season feels a lot like "you dont need to be able to outrun a lion, just outrun the other dudes also running from the lion." We dont have to be good, just stink less than the other mediocre teams in the AL (to make the playoffs). From that lens, I can see a good defensive c making an impact, but they shouldnt. Its like joining a league where nobody else knows what they are doing and then just making it into the playoffs. Its like congrats but it shouldnt have been that close.
  5. If an average C turns out to be our steal of the winter, even factoring in acquisition cost, I have a hard time believing we're finishing higher than third place. I dont think going from Wong to average C moves the needle that much, personally. But the outcome is possible. I think 1 of 3 things happen: 1. Crochet is a cy young candidate 2. We make aggressive in season moves 3. We arent serious contenders (but may sneak into playoffs because I think the AL is painfully weak)
  6. I dont think any catcher could be the steal of the winter. I think 90% of catchers can be lumped in with each other. Could be wrong
  7. Most of us would want Bregman at 3yrs / 75M. Most of us would want him at 2 yrs / 60M. But hes just not at the point where he is willing to accept a short term deal, and I dont think he will get there (I think he'll find a 5 yr deal). If the 5 yr offers get pulled and he overplays his hand and he has to retreat to a short term contract, then of course, we'll be interested. But it really doesnt make sense for him to take a 1 yr deal. Everyone knows he can still play at a high level, so I think he has more to lose than to gain to kick the can down the road 1 yr, and see whats available 1 yr from now when hes 1 yr older (coming off a 1 yr deal, even if he's 5 WAR in that year)
  8. I agree. Not thinking of any posters/fans in mind, but even some of my personal friends....Its like 1) Why dont the sox spend money! How did they let themselves get and remain so mediocre this 1/2 decade ..... and then 2) (After every FA signing, league wide) What an overpay! You cant have it both ways. Again, not directed at anybody here. Unless Bregman has all offers of 5yrs+ pulled, he isnt taking a shorter one. I agree at this point, we are long shots at best for him, and Ive made my peace with that. He was always a plan C behind Soto and Teoscar.
  9. In the beginning of the offseason, i wanted to upgrade oneill but considered him an acceptable fallback, but ive moved on from both options at this point in time and agree.
  10. I dont think hed take 30-35 1 yr deal. If you want the sox to be serious, you need to give term (not always, but more often than not we're losing guys for the length we are unwilling to go).
  11. If hes hitting .280 and throwing guys out like he did in 2023, I just dont think its possible that hes a problem. Certainly not enough of a problem to warrant taking his bat out of the lineup and replacing him with an all D noodle bat. Or to warrant further depletion from the farm. Personally, I think hes close to average , like almost every other starting catcher in the league. If the arm doesnt improve and he remains at -14 DRS (TY, MVP for the stat) thats different, but if he gets to where he was in 2023, I think its good enough considering hes above average hitting (for a catcher) and gunning guys down, and the fact that a lot of the stuff that catchers use to be responsible for is now called from the dugout. Stuff changes. And what you look for in a catcher has changed vs a few years ago
  12. Are these stats all encompassing? As in, do they take blocking , framing, tagging, and arm all into account?
  13. This whole thing has gotten nutty to me, but Im fully convinced that DHs are the most underpaid players / best free agent values you can find. A DH who anchors your lineup is worth huge. If he hits in the middle and is your top source of RBIs, that dude is undeniably extremely valuable. Occupying positions is not quite an after-thought, but for positional players....the value is the bat. Maybe a top defensive SS, maybe 1/2 of their value comes from D. And thats really the only place where defense can matter as much. Just look at everyones WAR. Its like offensive WAR - 4. Devensive WAR - 8. Overall WAR (everything included) - 4.3
  14. Theres also a durability component. I have no problem with Raffi DH'ing. We need the bat.
  15. Right , and you can make that projection right now, after another signing is made, and at any point during the season, and the projected fWAR will likely vary based on when you are projecting it.
  16. They do it. All 2025 WARs out right now are projected. Snapshot in time being when the projections were made.
  17. Agreed, but thats not talking about the same thing. The initial conversation related to the impact to projected fWAR at a snapshot in time (immediately after Bregman signing) and you are talking about fWAR at a different snapshot in time (after conclusion of reg season)
  18. Why these two is because they were outbid on everyone who they wanted who was better
  19. After 800 innings , your paying for what he did. At 200 , you are paying for what he is going to do (nods at Notin). Good scouts and GMs shouldnt need a long resume to know if he can get batters out. Trust the talent level that your scouts/coaches/front-office dudes assign to him (after all, you are paying your assessors). Trust your own eyes also. Proof is for p*ssies. Take a leap.
  20. No, our offense is disturbingly mediocre and we've signed 0 bats.
  21. I actually think our pitching is closer to the braves than our offense. Last year, their top position player didnt play a position, he was a DH :0 The year before they had 3 silver sluggers and Ozuna the fourth big bat , received MVP votes. Our hitting is not on this level. I was screaming about getting Ozuna years back. It shouldnt be too hard to get there. The league is underrating the impact of DH's/1Bs who mash. All you have to do is stop obsessing about defense, pitching, all these other peripheral things and return to what we did when we were successfull. Prioritize hitting
