    Its certainly a cost vs benefit decision that weighs having the best lineup factoring in availability (health), streakiness, and handedness vs ideal defensive alignment. But there is no debating that the amount of players playing multiple positions is on the rise, and platooning is on the rise (shortening benches), and carrying an extra pitcher is on the rise (again shortening benches) and guys are just moving around more.

    Agreed, we'll see how Devers, Yoshida, Roman, Bregman, Campbell, Story, Abreu, Hamilton, Mayer are doing (health-wise and skill-wise) and we will make adjustments. The further out you look, the cloudier it gets (my opinion) and its also my opinion that its fine. We dont need to know right now where guys will settle in, and there will continue to be adjustments for injuries and other factors as well. We have a lot of versatility and some old school folks may not like that , thinking that its best to have guys who know their position, and stability - but I think that versatility is more important than set roles/positions.

    Literally every fantasy baseball article I read is talking about who so many guys throughout the league are going to have so many eligible positions by June. I know thats talking fantasy baseball but if guys are gaining position eligibility in fantasy its because they are moving around. Its like a huge talking point among baseball nerds how the game has changed so much in this regard. Positions are fluid in todays mlb.

    Yup, cross-pollination / strategic redundancy. They want as many guys ready to play as many different positions as possible. Decisions will be made on a case by case and day by day basis regarding who is playing and at what position.

    Guys will move around, guys will platoon and the lineup will change even if there were no injuries/maint days, which there will be. Those of you who think guys will only play one position, you are just looking at things through an old school lens, and we're not that way and neither are most teams. Versatility/flexibility/adaptability/changes - more than you are use to seeing. Count on it.

    Sure, but we've spoken a lot about the first few weeks, so its easy for that point to get lost.

    Lack of "urgency" (prob "concern" more accurate to my point, which is:) this lack of urgency/concern might be disingenuous. Very possible some are crapping their pants at Raf turning into a question mark.

    I understood ya. You were saying they know that if they stay healthy, talent wont be an issue and theyll get a big payday so the only reason for them to re-up now would be fear of injury

    But sure, there has to be a place to play Hickey and see where he lands. Ive always been more excited about Jonafran, but we need to see who he is after that injury.

    The bar (run-production expectancy) is a lot higher when you move off catcher.

    Sure, but when catchers move to 1b, its usually (not always) a desperate attempt to save a plummeting prospect (Blake Swihart)

    he (hickey) doesnt have the ops to play 1b and is a borderline prospect at this point, to me

    Maybe its me, but I find Casas to be a streakier bat than even Yoshida.

    they are not rigidly slating one starter/position, they are keeping versatility and prioritizing flexibility.
