    I was talking about #1 picks in general. The higher you pick someone doesn’t mean they are better, or even turn out better, and that goes for all sports, so I don’t look at what pick in what round as much like most others do.

    I didn’t call it devastating, but my main point was that the Sox through all the years I’ve been following them is they have had a hard time drafting, and developing good starting pitching.

    This whole Ball thing started when I just asked the question what happened to Trey Ball? Amazing that it has caused so much excitement.

    I was talking more about last year, and especially in Sept, and Oct, which I thought was inconsistent .I like Houck, and no i don’t expect him to come nowhere’s near a no hitter every time out. I just want to see what he does for a full year as a starter.

    I didn’t hear Cora say, but if Chris Frail hadn’t been hurt I don’t know if Houck would be starting the season in the starting rotation, and the same goes for Whitlock. The game has changed, which I think for the worse, but I don’t think the starters are as important as they used to be especially when they can’t go through the order for the 3rd time anymore.

    Why are we only talking about Ball? Houck was a #1 pick, and is a work in progress, who has been very inconsistent up to this point. I hope he turns out to be a good reliable starting pitcher, but at this point he is not. Groome was a #1 pick also, and yes he’s been injured, but at this point the jury is out on him too. There is a difference between a drafted pitcher, and one that comes in a trade. You have to give up something for them, and sometimes they cost more. I don’t really care how many pitchers are on the 40:man, but just what’s on the current big league staff. Like I’ve said before I don’t care about prospects until they are in a Red Sox uniform, and produce, or are used in a trade to get something good back.

    It’s not a shameful anomaly to mess up on Ball, but i think it is a bigger deal when you mess up when you draft so many pitchers #1, and they don’t pan out to be any good. It’s not like the Red Sox have the market on home grown talent on their pitching staffs through the years, and that’s why they have to go out, and spend millions on pitching from other teams. How many homegrown pitchers are on the staff right now?

    I don’t think Downs, Lugo, or Bonaci will get you much, but it’s worth a try. It’s amazing at times the RedSox have had some great OF come up through the system, and then at other times the the pipeline has dried up. It wasn’t that many years ago that Mookie became an OF, and even Brock Holt got put out there along with Swihart, because of the lack of outfielders.

    I’d give him some more time. He’s still young, and could get better. Boggs wasn’t that good when he came up, but he became a pretty good 3B.

    What ever happened to Trey Ball? He was a #1 too, but never made it.

    It was a comment in jest according to the subject. I was fully aware at 27 Fitzy is nothing more than a utility guy. Having a good ST though.

    Yes, and how about Fitzy at 2B? Could have spent that $140M spent on Story on some real pitching instead.

    I’m all for the signing, but not at the expense at not resigning Bogey, or Raffy.

    I don’t think you can call the Story pickup as being brilliant until you see at the very least how he handles playing in Boston, and to see what his signing does to the makeup of the team going forward. Right now I think he makes the team better, but will it make the team better in the long run?

    I think the Red Sox are going to go through many pitchers this year, and I think more than normal will get their chances. All hands on deck.

    Seabold was even more brutal. If they are that bad after 1 ST game get rid of them both.

    A big problem now to me too is that with the Story signing I can’t see the Red Sox having 3 IF signed to big long term contracts.

    Agree, and with xtra players on the roster until May 2nd, which should be pitchers there should be enough starters to go around not to have to use openers. Of course with a shortened ST pitching all pitching may be more inconsistent the first month, or so.
