    It’s not that we can’t get how useful WAR is to some, but I for one just don’t care.

    You just can’t let it go. This isn’t the only time on here that someone mentioned how some on here don’t like different opinions, and all this metric stuff is a good example of that. I mentioned yesterday that there is nothing wrong with how i view things concerning metrics, and there is nothing wrong with how the metric people view things. It can’t get any simpler than that, but that isn’t any good for the metric worshippers.

    I watch baseball the same way today as I did watching baseball when I first started watching 60+ years ago. In other words just like metrics never happened. To me metrics is reading a box score, and there is nothing wrong with looking at things that way. On the other hand the ones who like metrics, and can’t do with out it, and look at things that way there is nothing wrong with that either.

    I wasn’t talking about me specifically when I said you knew who had good range, or not, and was talking about scouting reports that has been around for many years. I’ve watched Red Sox SS since Eddie Bressoud, and I just can’t say I thought to much who had good range, and who didn’t. I don’t think Rico, Burrelson, Hoffman, Johnny V, or Bogey today were rangy SS, but they got the job done, and wouldn’t care where they stood on the metric scale.

    I’m not trying to evade anything, but I just don’t care that much about it. I like good defense as much as anyone, but I just don’t think about it that much on how much range someone has compared to someone else, and I’m not a big fan of gold glove awards either.

    I saw him play many times, but never really thought that much about it, but I know the talk was out there. It did appear that he fielded most that he got to, and looked pretty smooth doing it.

    I get it, but even without the new metrics you knew who had good range, and who didn’t infielder, or outfielder.

    Doesn’t it depend on what you mean by best fielding? He didn’t have the range of others, but he could field the balls that he got to.

    I don’t think the average fan has a need to know that stuff, or cares one way, or the other. I know I don’t. I’ve seen JBJ play the OF enough to see that he is a great outfielder, and could care less if he’s better, or worse than any other outfielder.

    I’ve said since metrics have become such a big thing in baseball that it has not made the game better, and in my opinion it’s made it worse. To some metrics is just like a cellphone that they can’t do without it now. I can do without, and I do.

    At least Diekman pitched good for once.

    I hope he can, but that is a big if. He certainly hasn’t earned his contract up to this point. I was all for the trade, but not for the resigning with a year left on his old contract, and a predictable TJ in his future, which did happen.

    That was my point the Sale hasn’t been a #1 starter for years even though he is paid like one, Sale’s ship has sailed.

    When was the last time Chris Frail was the Red Sox best starter? I would say the first part of the 2018 season.

    I would think Story needs all the AB he can get.

    Sounds like Story is batting 6th in his first game today. I don’t know if this will be the regular order to start, but I think if I’m paying someone $140M I’d bat him higher than 6th.

    I think the starting rotation was set before the lockout began, and both Houck, and Whitlock would have started in the pen, but Chris Frail getting hurt changed all that, and Houck should get a good chance in the rotation now. Then depending on what happens until Frail gets back it will be a 3 man battle for two spots.

    Good job by Tony Mass on his first NESN gig today. Even had some good Bogey talk, by him, and OB.

    I understand that #1 picks in every sport flub every year. Why do people put such lofty expectations on high school, and college athletes? That’s an easy one, because that’s where the professionals come from. You may call a prospect that is on the 40 man club as technically reaching the major league club, but like I keep saying they mean nothing to me unless they are playing in Boston, and producing, or used as a trade chip. Bottom line still is the Red Sox have not been good at drafting, and producing good starting pitching no matter what round they were drafted in.
