  1. What the hell are you talking about? Did anyone say they never heard of Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain? Did anyone say you had a huge experience gap? Did anyone call any battle cry Unpoetic? I do agree you shouldn't comment when you have no idea what the comment is about.
  2. Duran's a good offensive player, but not a great leadoff batter, because he strikes out too much and isn't a top on base guy. But when he does get a hit, his extra-base wheels make him a game-changer (his speed -- not his hands -- also makes him an average outfielder). He has value, and Breslow will blow it if he doesn't improve the club by using the Sox' strongest area of depth it to bring back reinforcements for the pitching staff. Duran was All-Star Game MVP, but Anthony could be an All-Star for 10 years. Trading an established star isn't unprecedented. Boston had a third baseman named Carney Lansford who won the AL batting crown in 1981 at age 24. The next year they brought up a rookie, also 24, who batted .349 in 104 games. After the season they traded their batting champ and gave 3B to the new guy. Wade Boggs then won five of the next six batting titles, six of the next seven OBP crowns, and had five straight seasons of 8 WAR or higher.
  3. That Magical '88 team also had Greenwell, in his sophomore season, finishing 2nd in AL MVP at age 24. Dang yo -- Mayer won't be 24 until 2027... when Anthony's only 23! Hope we're all still around by then...
  4. When Abreu comes back healthy, the Sox will create a new position for him. Since he has the best throwing arm, the analytics department is now going to convert Abreu to "Mound Thrower." From now on, Wilyer will stand next to Red Sox pitchers, and whenever one wants to make a pick-off throw, they'll step off, flip him the ball, and only he gets to make a peg to a base. Abreu will also get to field and make corresponding throws on any bunts or comebackers. Fenway Park's mound has also been fitted with special restraining straps that will emerge from the rubber and pin down pitchers' arms, so they can no longer interfer on any ball in play. It was designed to be controlled by the manager, but MLB didn't trust Cora not to try to extend the straps and tie up batters, so they gave the remote to Bregman, who was smart enough in the past to let Cora take all the blame.
  5. In order: already the team's hardest hitter, smoothest fielder, and wildest card (KC is the supersonic theme park ride that threatens simultaneous nausea and/or screams of joy). The Core Four is here, now the Sox just need to transition them into the right positions for the long haul: C: Narvaez SS: Mayer LF: Anthony 2B? 3B? 1B? CF? Trade Bait? Campbell
  6. Not arguing about any of your points, just some of the numbers. Assume your using bb-ref for dWAR, since I don't think Fangraphs does it? 2018 dWAR leaders: Betts 1.7, JBJ 0.8, Moreland 0.5, Beni 0.3, Bogey 0.1. All the rest were zeroes or negatives, with a team season total of 0.2. Eeegads, the 2025 Red Sox team season total dWAR is also 0.2! Here are our positives: Rafaela 1.3, Bregman 0.8, Narvaez 0.8, Hamilton 0.6, Abreu 0.5, Wong 0.3, Story 0.2, Mayer 0.2, Sabol 0.1. This whole dWAR stat may be overrated... how in the world is '25 Devers possibly a -0.6? Was he too negative being too defensive about playing the field? If he never steps onto the diamond without wearing a batting helmet, doesn't that literally make him -- some will like this -- a total zero?
  7. I absolutely think the Red Sox want Anthony to win Rookie of the Year... in the year 2026. If he starts raking and gets demoted when Abreu comes back, you'll have your conspiracy. But barring the trade of another outfielder, if they give Anthony a first baseman's mitt, it means he's here to stay.
  8. he's a real CAR-NARV-ore batting high as number 4 isn't he a bit like Big Three wannabees
  9. Rafaela is signed longterm to a contract the team can carry. I'm not worried about CF. The point about having Garcia, along with Anthony -- and Campbell if he doesn't smooth out his 2B edges -- is that both Duran and Abreu are expendable, and neither will be part of the outfield on the next true contender... unless they're both traded for pitchers who'll help make Boston better.
  10. Anyone watching daily/nightly can see that both Duran and Abreu are overrated defensively -- at least by the stats that non-Sox fans or non-Sox media monitor. Duran improved since he debuted, but it's pretty obvious his hands are still clanky. Abreu has less speed, but a far stronger arm. Right now Breslow should trade whichever player yields the best return for pitching. And nobody should stress that Rafaela is etched in stone as a core starter, either. The Password Garcia is already on the 40-man roster, currently has an .840 OPS in Worcester, is a strong defender in the outfield, and hit more minor league home runs last year than any of The Big Three.
  11. They're called baseball players. A guy like Refsnyder, when strangers ask him what he does for a living, probably doesn't answer, "Oh, I platoon and pinch-hit vs. left-handed pitchers."
  12. Most Errors Red Sox Regulars: 5 Duran, Abreu, Bregman, Story, Campbell 4 Brennan Bernardino 3 Rafaela, Narvaez, Hamilton, Toro, Gonzalez ... the outfield isn't usually as pivotal as infielders not turning double plays, but last night's muff by Anthony shows the difference -- when an infielder misses a grounder, the batter reaches base; when an outfielder misses a grounder, runners circle the bases. Boston's starting outfield was maybe slightly overrated early on as the greatest in Sox history... 13 Es in less than half a season by Duran-Rafaela-Abreu doesn't look so good compared to the 2018 season total of 11 for the trio of: Beni 4, JBJ 6, Mookie 1. Or how about this 1977 Red Sox unit (when intact): Yaz 0, Lynn 2, Evans 1... the first two played all year, but Dewey missed about 100 games with injury, and was spelled by primary DH Rice, the erratic Carbo, and Rick Miller, another Gold Glover.
  13. It's Cora's fault! Before the game he told him to field a single on the side instead of get in front of it. AC's just has to be better at preparing the defense to play sound fundamental baseball.
  14. Multiple choice: when he homers, and one of the Roman candles they shoot off hits the manager, who was aiming at Cora? A: Brez, B: Raffy, C: Ron Roenicke, D: Joey (haha)
  15. Yes. Billy would hit him with a sucker punch. But Earl would knock him out with bad breath.
  16. I'm just here to hit. They told me to put away my spikes. Next thing you know, Hammy will pull a groiny, and they'll ask me to pinch run.
  17. I don't really care about fielding percentage, but I really care about defense. My post was in reply to Max, who always tries to separate and stress hitting and pitching over defense. The whole idea is that pitching and defense are directly connected -- they both happen on one side of the ball in an attempt to prevent the offense from scoring. And the correct ruling on that Garcia grounder you described should have been a fielder's choice, not a hit. Semien chose to pursue Meidroth instead of immediately making a throw that would've beaten Garcia to 1B. I realize sometimes it goes the other way, like if a shortstop dives in the hole to make a stop and only has one chance at an out by throwing to 2B or 3B to force a lead runner; if he gets the out, it's a fielder's choice, but if everyone's safe, the batter gets a hit because there was no way he was getting thrown out at 1B.
  18. John Henry doesn't want to lose more baseballs that fly out of Fenway Park.
  19. I think there were Yopherys on my Yes poster. Or was it Tull?
