It is mind-boggling sometimes when fans blame the manager for not making the roster he's given by the front office perform better. Why can't he just order players to make better contact, throw more strikes, catch more outs, and never get erased on the bases?

A thread about pitcher W-L records

Bell is convinced Lawson was planted in Boston's batting cages by Ramiro Mendoza to sabotage the team that had several Yankee fans I know very nervous over the winter. -

According to bb-ref, Schiraldi blew a save and lost Game Six of the '86 Series. Stanley, who allowed Calvin's inherited runners to score, obviously also blew a save. But what if Schiraldi-- while watching Steamer wild-pitch home the tying run -- was offered a ticket for Game Seven at half price by a disgusted Red Sox fan in the front row (who had enough and was leaving early)? If distracted Cal said, "No, thanks," and then bought a ticket for his shrink for Gm 7 at face value, didn't he blow the savings he could've had in the 12th? -
Not disputing the data, but specific batters have to be considered. My example was a guy who regularly tries to hit to the opposite field, and usually succeeds (even if it's not always a "hit"). Letting him swing probably gives as much a chance to move the runner, and definitely better odds to plate the runner. The reason Cora and some other managers don't bunt -- according to announcers, especially ex-players -- is because modern MLB batters can't bunt, since they don't even practice it anymore.

Anybody can second guess. I prefer to first guess -- at the time a move is being made. At a travel ball game over the weekend, in a scoreless contest with runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs, the manager had his #3 batter bunt them over. As soon as I saw the kid square around I said, "No." Not just because the guy has a good bat, but because he hits to the opposite field with authority. I'd rather not give up the out but let him hit to the right side; maybe he gets a hit and drives in a run or at least hits a grounder or fly ball that can move the lead runner to 3rd with one out. Btw: he hit a sacrifice bunt and the run eventually scored... but I'd still rather let that particular batter swing away -- though not if he was a dead pull hitter (which happened later, same situation, when the leadoff man drilled a one-hopper right at the third baseman for an easy double play).

Doesn't matter; Campbell is the guy the Red Sox are hoping turns it around and wins Rookie of the Year. Under the rules, that will reward the team with a draft pick, and most importantly, it can't reward Campbell with an extra year of service time because he's already locked up with an extension. This may be why you won't see Campbell get sent back to Worcester to work on his hitting... at least, he'll never be replaced by Roman Anthony, specifically -- in case the latter is actually too good. If Boston can just limit Anthony to fewer than 130 at bats or fewer than 45 days on the active MLB roster, he'll retain his rookie status for 2026... by then the Sox will have secured that all-important extra year of control, and they'll be happy if Roman wins Rookie of the Year in '26 and nets them a bonus draft pick.

It doesn't matter which team eventually trades for Duran (or Abreu) -- but Breslow better be getting some pitching in return. If someone values Duran enough to legitimately jolt them into the playoffs, they''ll be willing to sacrifice a legitimate arm. It happens frequently, and even recently, with pitchers like Joe Ryan and Cole Ragans. That's if a deal is made this month. Brez would rather wait until the deadline at the end of July because: 1. maybe, just maybe, the Sox will start winning one-run games and get back in the wild card race... ... and if so, most importantly: 2. he can hold off promoting Anthony another month, in case Roman really is a star, so he'll be less likely to win Rookie of the Year, which rewards the player a full year of service time -- BECAUSE NOW IS CLEARLY LESS IMPORTANT TO THE FRONT OFFICE THAN SEVEN YEARS FROM NOW. -

The most common advice big league players, coaches and managers tell a rookie when he's first called up is, "Be yourself." Sometimes that only works for so long, but those who make constant adjustments stick around. We don't remember those that can't. If you're Frank Tanana and arm issues suddenly prevent your fastball from striking out batters like Nolan Ryan, you can't be yourself anymore. So be Bill Lee. If you're slumping Rich Gedman and a coach changes your stance, you still can't be George Brett. So be a coach yourself. -

Doesn't Dylan Cease have to be part of this trade? He'll be a free agent at the end of the season, and probably moved by the end of July anyway. Not having a great year so far, but led his league in games started four of the past five years. The Red Sox MASH unit rotation could certainly use a guy like that... -

Classic post picking stats to show the opposite of another poster's stats. The three samples I listed were when Bello mastered each level and proved he was ready for the next. The two you listed were first stints at each level the year before he established himself there (or before Covid). The last three were obviously rehab starts, where stats mean as much as in Spring Training. -

What was Bello's out pitch or pitches in his formative years, when he posted these W-L, ERA, WHIP? 2022 Greenville High A: 5-0, 2.27, 1.011 2023 Portland AA: 4-2, 1.69, 0.80 2023 Worcester AAA: 6-2, 2.76, 1.193 -

It's not punitive, but not letting Bello work out of those jams isn't rewarding him, either. I did say the point was the match-ups, but isn't confidence a factor in the development of young pitchers? To put it another way, does Bello ever look overconfident? -

It seems like even Cora is on the new school wagon trying to dilute or eradicate the emphasis on pitcher wins. How many times has he replaced Bello with a lead in the 5th inning? Three or four? Sometimes, AC takes the ball when Bello is just one out away from qualifying for W. Last time, Bryan ran off the mound with the ball when he saw Jefe coming. I thought it was Cora's way of sending a message to Bello for pushing his pitch count so high, going to 3-and-2 too much, and not putting batters away (Francona used to yank Buchholz with a lead in the 5th, probably for the same issue). But Cora did the same thing in Giolito's last start. Maybe he's making a point; it can't always be about analytic department match-ups, can it? (check that: that is the point). -

Skenes trade proposal: let Pirates pick four -- 1. Mayer or Arias; 2. Duran or Abreu; 3. two minor league pitchers. That package has potential to match any from other clubs. A top-10 overall middle infield prospect, an award-winning starting outfielder (Duran All-Star MVP, Abreu Gold Glove), and two top-rated arms... It also utilizes Red Sox' depth while these resources are at a premium not seen in the organization in about a decade. The time is right, and the need is ripe. -
Red Sox Selecting Nate Eaton, Recalling Luis Guerrero
5GoldGlovesOF,75 replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
We know both statements are true, which makes Breslow's excuse for calling up Eaton -- left-handed starting pitchers on the Angels and Yankees -- all the more lame. No one expects Anthony to save the season, but what the Sox have isn't working. A power-hitting prospect with a career .400 On Base Percentage batting in front of Devers every day might help. Anthony probably won't be as good in the majors, but it's worth noting Jarren Duran had a .366 OB% in 5 years in the minors, and .325 OB% in 5 years in MLB. This season leading off innings, Duran has a .273 OB%... -
Red Sox Selecting Nate Eaton, Recalling Luis Guerrero
5GoldGlovesOF,75 replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Breslow and the front office are now officially full of crap. Calling up Eaton instead of Anthony borders on criminal. Brez gave the safe by-the-book GM/CBO/Manager excuse for choosing Eaton, a right-handed hitter, over Anthony, a lefty swinger. Boston's next opponent, the Angels, will be starting two southpaws... and then the Sox face the Yankees, who have tough lefties Fried and Rodon. Just in case, let's check this season's stats: Eaton is a .300 hitter with an .854 OPS in 50 at bats vs. lefties. Pretty good... ... but Anthony vs. lefties: .393 BA, 1.025 OPS in 56 ABs. How does the analytics dept. sleep at night? (scratch that; they prob don't) -
Anthony is coming soon, but be prepared for slumps, struggles and Ks -- just like with Campbell and now Mayer. Will it suck to watch? Yup, mostly. But such growing pains are normal, even for future stars. It doesn't mean the entire Big Three will dominate this final and ultimate level, like they did in AA and AAA... but most who do that usually at least become pretty good big leaguers. This summer -- with the Red Sox treading basepaths again -- is as good a time as any for the future core to go through such adjustments.

Back when starting pitchers were expected to finish what they started, ERAs sometimes fluctuated because of a certain approach... Most complete game pitchers understandably tire in the last few frames, but some with a big lead also may take it easy and pitch to contact more. Throw less pitches, trust your defense to help end games quicker, save your shoulders and elbows for next time it's close. There's really no way any stat can prove or disprove this theory -- just a little qualitative data: Bob Gibson had too much pride to ever ease up -- and his ERA in '68 was almost a run better than AL counterpart Denny McLain... who admitted he intentionally grooved pitches to old Mickey Mantle so the Yankee idol could homer in his final month.
