  1. In 5-on-5 type sports like basketball and hockey, star power can dominate games. Hockey also features goalies, who can single-handedly control outcomes. But in team sports with basically double the players - football, baseball - even key positions like QB and pitcher need a lot of support from teammates. Not last night. The Yankees have been carried all year by one superhuman slugger (they do have a few really good pitchers, but they didn't work Friday). Meanwhile, the Red Sox had two greats collaborating: Crochet and Narvaez. Chapman also contributed his usual consistency. This trio has been money all season, but it hasn't been enough... a healthy return of Bregman and the maturation of top prospects has to combine for the Sox to make a playoff run...
  2. I know he was a beast, but 1985 bugged me. The Mets had become a contender, but both Pedro Guerrero and Dave Parker deserved NL All-Star starts over Strawberry (Tony Gwynn and Dale Murphy were the other OF starters). 1985 First half stats: Guerrero 21-48-.312-.990... Parker 16-62-.304-.891.... Darryl 8-19-.229-.794
  3. When the Sox got Hosmer, they weren't really buyers. The Padres were just givers.
  4. Definitely selling. The Red Sox are in a rare position this year, with top prospects about to become core players, and a surplus of regulars that they would be remiss not to use in trade to improve what is always the biggest issue -- good young pitching. In recent summers, the Sox had a few veterans that could've helped contenders at the deadline -- except Bloom froze. But this time, Breslow has available guys that will be in high demand: a star closer, a couple of starting pitchers, and at least one award-winning corner outfielder (All-Star MVP, Gold Glover)... not to mention, some bench specialists who can hit. Standing pat again will be like standing water: stagnant.
  5. Early favorite has to The Password - didn't even make the majors yet but is already the answer on game show trivia. He'll be like Darryl Strawberry, who got voted to All-Star games for decades by casual fans just because they liked his name on the ballot.
  6. Red Sox are in 4th place with a losing record in mid-June. There are those of us who watched Spring Training and thought then Boston was at its best with Mayer, Anthony and Campbell on the field. Best case scenario is they provide a spark to help the Sox get back in the race. If not, a line-up without the Big Three -- and Bregman, for now -- has already proven its not good enough. The worst thing that can happen isn't that the young guys struggle and the team stays also-ran. It will be worse if they're not allowed to struggle, adjust, and transition -- so they're ready when Breslow finally adds and develops enough quality pitching to contend...
  7. I may not be on a list, but I know an ignoramus when I look in the pond on a clear day. But I'm confused why sites create a special ignore function when members can already scroll past posters they don't want to read.
  8. Blue Moon = dumb commercial. Now it is. Now it's dumb. Now it's still dumb. Take your dumb peel outta my beer.
  9. I crack stupid jokes all the time, because I'm well aware of the folly of my spending so much time caring about grown men playing kids' games for a living. Posters are free to give opinions, but be prepared if your take is so shallow that you need to resort to name-calling of other posters. That approach never won arguments, even back in grade school. Using insults can always be avoided. However, any post that paints a picture of something as intolerable as say -- racism -- always deserves to be called out for the stain on society that it is.
  10. It's not that I want to deplete depth by trading good players, it's that there are two specific needs: making room for the Roman Empire, and acquiring legitimate pitching. Put it this way: if the Sox trade Duran or Abreu for a good arm and then one of the remaining starting outfielders gets injured, they can fill in the OF spot from the bench or another promotion. But if they don't upgrade the pitching -- even if no other pitchers get hurt -- they still have the same mediocre pitching.
  11. Crochet leads AL starters in innings pitched, and Chapman is right up there for AL relievers in innings and games pitched. But the main reason Crochet and Chapman are Boston's two best players is that they're strikeout pitchers... and that by far makes them most valuable, as it limits the perforated defense from touching the ball (except throwing it around the horn after Ks).
  12. Keep calling people derogatory names on an anonymous faceless forum. It's sure to prove your baseball acumen.
  13. The evidence wasn't erased that shows the Houston analytics department developed a sign-stealing system before the Astros hired a new bench coach for 2017. Members of their front office admitted it, and were promoted after the uniformed fall guys were suspended by MLB.
  14. What the hell are you talking about? Did anyone say they never heard of Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain? Did anyone say you had a huge experience gap? Did anyone call any battle cry Unpoetic? I do agree you shouldn't comment when you have no idea what the comment is about.
  15. Duran's a good offensive player, but not a great leadoff batter, because he strikes out too much and isn't a top on base guy. But when he does get a hit, his extra-base wheels make him a game-changer (his speed -- not his hands -- also makes him an average outfielder). He has value, and Breslow will blow it if he doesn't improve the club by using the Sox' strongest area of depth it to bring back reinforcements for the pitching staff. Duran was All-Star Game MVP, but Anthony could be an All-Star for 10 years. Trading an established star isn't unprecedented. Boston had a third baseman named Carney Lansford who won the AL batting crown in 1981 at age 24. The next year they brought up a rookie, also 24, who batted .349 in 104 games. After the season they traded their batting champ and gave 3B to the new guy. Wade Boggs then won five of the next six batting titles, six of the next seven OBP crowns, and had five straight seasons of 8 WAR or higher.
  16. That Magical '88 team also had Greenwell, in his sophomore season, finishing 2nd in AL MVP at age 24. Dang yo -- Mayer won't be 24 until 2027... when Anthony's only 23! Hope we're all still around by then...
  17. When Abreu comes back healthy, the Sox will create a new position for him. Since he has the best throwing arm, the analytics department is now going to convert Abreu to "Mound Thrower." From now on, Wilyer will stand next to Red Sox pitchers, and whenever one wants to make a pick-off throw, they'll step off, flip him the ball, and only he gets to make a peg to a base. Abreu will also get to field and make corresponding throws on any bunts or comebackers. Fenway Park's mound has also been fitted with special restraining straps that will emerge from the rubber and pin down pitchers' arms, so they can no longer interfer on any ball in play. It was designed to be controlled by the manager, but MLB didn't trust Cora not to try to extend the straps and tie up batters, so they gave the remote to Bregman, who was smart enough in the past to let Cora take all the blame.
  18. In order: already the team's hardest hitter, smoothest fielder, and wildest card (KC is the supersonic theme park ride that threatens simultaneous nausea and/or screams of joy). The Core Four is here, now the Sox just need to transition them into the right positions for the long haul: C: Narvaez SS: Mayer LF: Anthony 2B? 3B? 1B? CF? Trade Bait? Campbell
  19. Not arguing about any of your points, just some of the numbers. Assume your using bb-ref for dWAR, since I don't think Fangraphs does it? 2018 dWAR leaders: Betts 1.7, JBJ 0.8, Moreland 0.5, Beni 0.3, Bogey 0.1. All the rest were zeroes or negatives, with a team season total of 0.2. Eeegads, the 2025 Red Sox team season total dWAR is also 0.2! Here are our positives: Rafaela 1.3, Bregman 0.8, Narvaez 0.8, Hamilton 0.6, Abreu 0.5, Wong 0.3, Story 0.2, Mayer 0.2, Sabol 0.1. This whole dWAR stat may be overrated... how in the world is '25 Devers possibly a -0.6? Was he too negative being too defensive about playing the field? If he never steps onto the diamond without wearing a batting helmet, doesn't that literally make him -- some will like this -- a total zero?
  20. I absolutely think the Red Sox want Anthony to win Rookie of the Year... in the year 2026. If he starts raking and gets demoted when Abreu comes back, you'll have your conspiracy. But barring the trade of another outfielder, if they give Anthony a first baseman's mitt, it means he's here to stay.
  21. he's a real CAR-NARV-ore batting high as number 4 isn't he a bit like Big Three wannabees
