  1. I dunno -- maybe the Twinks were lucky to still have a chance since the Sox left so many runners on base... 1) Didn't like seeing Cora go to Barnes two days in a row, but it was inevitable in a Twinbill; 2) Sano is a monster, but hitting below .100 and too big and slow to catch up to a Barnes heater; please don't ever throw him an offspeed pitch again that he can actually hit; 3) when Arraez got up, both my son and I were yelling for an intentional walk, especially when it went to 3-0 -- I know teams should never put the winning run on base, but he's Minny's best contact batter... so maybe it was lucky Verdugo was playing left to rob Arraez' great oppo liner.
  2. Obviously no one expects a .700 winning percentage to continue, but what if Boston is still around .550 approaching the trade deadline? That could make July a very fascinating month for the Nation, depending on whether Bloom ultimately decides to be a buyer or seller. Imagine if the Sox still have one of the top five AL records (which would qualify for the postseason), and Bloom traded Barnes or Eovaldi for prospects...
  3. And as we've seen in the past two years, problems with the rotation always affect the workload and thus, effectiveness of the bullpen.
  4. Is there any doubt that someday during Devers career that balls, bats or players will be juiced once again?
  5. NESN discussion in the late innings of today's pivotal opposite-field hits -- OB: "Great hitting." Remdawg: "Great managing." Me: "Great batting coaching?" Also, wondering how far Big Puppy's home run would have gone on a warm summer day... Two years I predicted that someday Rafie might actually pull one out of Fenway. My son said today he might beat the Red Seat (but I hope they don't color it yellow with blue letters). "Deverstating" is not overstating.
  6. This. I've lived smack-dab between New York and Boston all my life, and maybe because fandom runs about 50-50 here -- with real baseball fans, not kids wearing NY caps because rappers do -- maybe the poor winners have more competition with each other. But before '04, I never saw the point of Yankee fans rubbing it in the faces of fans whose team NEVER won in my lifetime. I just assumed they were scared, knowing that the Red Sox were often a threat to someday changing their way of life forever more...
  7. Your breakdowns of "how we spend large" are intriguing -- and what happens will go a long way in defining the new big-market Bloom. I just can't get on board yet with any guarantees of Sox spending based on past GMs; not when the next extension or contract for more than 2 years here will be Bloom's first. I'm not down on most of his acquisitions of position players for the Sox (though the musical chairs outfield doesn't thrill), but believing is seeing...
  8. Ya, thanks, 700. I certainly celebrate when they win it all. But old Sox fans know better than to maniacally bang on walls when the game is still in question... even when, say, a team's ace closer comes in to face a 20-year old rookie (named Devers).
  9. Some of us don't want to expedite the inevitable popping of the balloon. Complaining is human, but gloating is uncool. Even when the '18 team was 70-30, we didn't dare brag, because 1). they could still blow it; 2). if they didn't, the pressure would then be on in the postseason; and 3). none of us actually played on the team.
  10. It's like nerds all vying for Penny's attention when they first met in Big Bang (or was that the new neighbor moving in upstairs)... except Sheldon, who waited a few years and dated the overlooked sure thing.* *obviously, these pop culture references are only symbols for actual associates that will remain nameless; call them Len, Howie and Raj... or Friedman, Cashman, and Blooman... or some guys I forgot at a singles bar (because nobody remembers a singles hitter).
  11. Make sure you shade in at least one more diamond than the Twins... every game would be great, but we'll settle for 3 outta 4.
  12. The bats won't really hold back either team over the course of a full season. But everyone knows that quality defense -- at least, consistent D -- is vital to winning rings. And any honest Red Sox or Yankee fan knows that over the long haul -- beyond pitching reclamation projects -- defense is each of their team's biggest areas of concern.
  13. I get that the Sox might not be for real. But I've been saying since the start of winter that the Yanks may not be "pretend"... and so far, they've done nothing to convince me otherwise (though somehow, all professional pundits still think NY's SS and C situation is not only championship caliber, but heavily favorable).
  14. I'd complain about today's MLB Power Rankings -- Sox are still #20 with the best record in the AL -- but mlb.com employs the all-time Bronx cheerleaders, so we're looking way up at the #3 team (behind only LA and SD) -- you know, the one with a losing record, inept defense, invisible offense if it can't homer, and overrated pitching staff of hopefuls and mopefuls.
  15. He's our Big Puppy. That jersey might outsell Kike's on Players' Nickname Weekend...
  16. Four outs. Rafie better hit the warehouse... if Cora doesn't bench him.
  17. Grow back shadow. Or cut hair. But don't get a tat.
  18. It's now an 8-inning game for the AL East lead...
  19. Richards spun one off Mancini's sweet spot, and then spun another off Santander's barrel.
  20. X stole home... or is that defensive incompetence? Richards shaved.
  21. I love the idea of the idea! Fans always welcome a few ideas in Boston -- not as incentives to attend a Fenway game or two each summer, but to watch or listen to a hundred or more every six months out of a year.
  22. Good point on this speculation. The notion that our new Baseball Officer possibly knew his former colleague's intentions to lock up Betts may have been appealing to the traders, sparing them another offseason enduring media and fan demands and accusations, supplemented by more "lowball" offers and company lines about radar blips.
  23. Since free agency began, it's always been unfathomable to fans how much pros get paid to play a game. But if we take numbers out, no one would argue whether or not players like Trout, Betts or Lindor deserve to make wages at the top of their markets. No one would even argue if owners can afford them, since rich guys bought the teams, and are either making profits or are wealthy enough to absorb losses... otherwise, they sell (players or clubs). The contracts for Machado and Harper, Betts and Cole, Tatis and Lindor, etc., etc. show that the cost to acquire -- or retain -- top talent continues to rise. Fans really don't care exactly how many digits are on paychecks of their favorites... just how many are on price tags for ballpark pretzels, beer and parking.
