  1. Another day of rest for the bullpen, another day closer to when ERod's arm comes back to life.
  2. And no matter what anyone thinks of Joe West, at least he made the right calls -- maybe the most important overturned calls -- in recent Red Sox history: Bellhorn's homer, ARod's slap, Altuve's fly ball. Imagine if those calls went the other way (like they always used to)... there would probably be no talksox, and possibly more posters would either be in institutions, radicalized, homeless or six feet under.
  3. EVERYONE in the industry is picking the Yanks to win the AL in a runaway. I might agree, except they have more IFs than the past three years combined, when they were also favorites with "the greatest HR power and best bullpen of all-time". They lost HR champ Voit and lefty set-up Britton. And replaced their #2, 3 and 4 starters? If George was alive, would he really let Snell and Darvish go to the Pads? MLB.com has a few writers who love NY -- this past week, they rated the Yanks the MLB's third-best rotation (behind LA and SD), best offense and most improved team (Jay Bruce > Gardner?). These are also the same guys who called Sanchez the All-Star catcher because he hits longballs. Can they win it all with mediocre to bad D at C and SS? Maybe, but if they don't, watch them open the wallets for at least a star free agent shortstop next winter (and move Gleybar and/or DJ back to the corners).
  4. Or that after today, half the teams will be tied for last. But what about the other half...
  5. Definitely. I said full-time regular; Downs will take over an infield position because of injury or trade. Chavis may always be a part-timer, at 1B, 2B or DH... somewhere. And my darkhorse candidate for a catcher who moves rapidly up the depth chart is Connor Wong. A great half season of power hitting and defensive improvement down on the farm might allow Bloom to flip Vazquez for more prospects!
  6. Or Danny Santana? And since this is a Realistic Part II thread: who will be the Red Sox next full-time starting position player called up from the minors? I'm predicting Jeter Downs, after the trade deadline. Duran will also make the bigs this summer, but in a platoon role as he makes adjustments.
  7. Nice research. Still, I wonder if projections consider spring training performances... not stats, but doesn't this month always seem so contradictory when one week a poster says, "Spring training performances don't count" and the next: "Boy, our starters look great!" Also, despite the numbers, I also wonder: beyond each team's #1 aces, would any manager or fan honestly take the next three Yankee pitchers over, say, Strasburg/Corbin/Lester or Keuchel/Lynn/Cease or Fried/Soroka/Anderson?
  8. That writer and site constantly overrates NY, basically every preseason. Seriously, does anyone besides Yankee fans truly think Cole plus three question marks are better than Scherzer/Strasburg/Corbin/Lester? Fried/Morton/Soroka/Anderson? Giolito/Keuchel/Lynn/Cease? Bieber/Plesac/Civale/McKenzie? The A's??? Do honest Yankee fans even?
  9. David Price just opted in... the clubhouse.
  10. They have the balls -- but don't know if Sanchez can catch them.
  11. They should just IL him in September with a dead bat.
  12. They hijacked Jax' talksox thread on Sox posters being false positive.
  13. He may be the kind of guy Bloom would go for. I'm with Moon, in that I'd prefer someone already starring in D1 (closer to the bigs); I saw a TV profile on high school athletes, and Jordan Lawlar hasn't even played in a single high school playoff game against top scholastic competition yet. It's not his fault there's a pandemic, but it does limit his experience and scout evals...
  14. I hate the idea that the literal close quarters construct of a bullpen may be the actual cause of a bullpen game.
  15. I remember how much I embraced analytics in the '18 World Series when the Dodgers benched their top three home run hitters because they batted lefty. However, I didn't pay for a billboard in LA thanking them.
  16. You're right, with so many rounds in the Wild Card era, each series would seem to present additional weight and/or stress (at least to fans watching). Then again, what could be more all-or-nothing than one-game Wild Card showdowns? Single elimination tournaments may be made for TV theater in college sports or the NFL, with its 16-game regular season. But the MLB with its 162-game slate never intended teams to play six months to qualify for one-and-dones. Speaking of catastrophes, wonder how many Rays fans still haven't got over Cash yanking Snell with three batters coming up who were 0-for-6 with 6 Ks (all swinging)?
  17. I tell myself that somewhere there's gotta be someone -- that is both a stat guy and a baseball guy -- convinced that postseason games mean about 10 times more than regular season games who might call that a large sample size...
  18. I've read conflicting reports, some that give Del Castillo a high rating at catcher. He did work out all winter with Sal Perez. Personally, I think a guy playing the toughest position on the diamond for a top-ranked D1 team has to be pretty good. But good point about catching prospects and taking time to develop -- reminds us of Varitek, who wasn't a full-time starter in the bigs until age 27. O's took Rutschman #1 overall and obviously Covid has stalled his progress, but he's already 23 (only six months younger than Devers, who won't be shifting to C).
  19. Yankees are the favorites... to not have any more pitchers blow out elbows or home run hitters blow out knees. That will only happen to every other team.
  20. I like Del Castillo, sophomore catcher and clean-up batter at University of Miami, the top-ranked college team in the nation a month ago. Older brother Christian, UM outfielder, was also named ACC Player of the Week in February. Alex Cora's college...
  21. Pumpsie Green was just telling you this the other day... on an excellent NESN My Story with Jahmai Webster. Green outhit everyone in Spring Training, but got sent down, despite public outrage. After the Red Sox fired their racist manager in July, they brought Green up as their first African American player. Boston, Massachusetts -- Union state, one of the original 13 colonies -- was the last MLB city to integrate. It was twelve years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier.
  22. Thanks for the qualifier (trying to post an icon...) Things to consider: Verdugo turns 25 in May. Is his ceiling higher than Beni's age 22/23 seasons, when Andrew averaged 18 HR, 88 RBI, 94 Runs, 20 SB, .280 BA, .803 OPS? Benintendi turns 27 in July... will he ever again approach his age 22/23 stats? Regarding that -5.7 guy: what would LA have to give up to get the Sox to take TWELVE MORE YEARS of Mookie Betts?
  23. Maybe a positive will be they'll be forced to try younger options, who may get experience sooner. Sox fans can get on board watching hopefuls develop, but there's no way they'll stand -- or sit (in front of the tube) -- watching more castoffs from bargain bins again.
  24. No doubt, but at least they were polished professional outfielders. I was responding to Elk's question of why management is risking playing a guy like Cordero this season.
