  1. I heard he had a trade lined up with Boston where Houston would acquire Schreiber for Altuve, Bregman, top catching prospect Yainer Diaz, and a minor league lefty pitcher named Dombrowski. BTV approved this deal, so I don't what Crane's problem was...
  2. It's not my criteria at all -- I'm just trying to think of the masses and how the front office always does its best to deflect from admitting the truth. I want what's best for the team, too... but I'm positive trading another homegrown star and getting another average MLB outfielder, an infielder who can't hit minor league pitching, and a back-up catcher in return will not cut it this winter. Here's an idea: since any team interested in Devers will want him longterm and proceed with such intention, then the Sox demand should be for much more than "one year."
  3. Mookie is one of those people. In an interview I heard him say he just wanted what was fair.
  4. If fans were fairly high they wouldn't be so miserable, but I disagree with your definition. Most miserable pricks don't want everything their way; the misery comes from the perception of not getting anything their way... I just want a good pretzel. But no packet mustard.
  5. I'd hate to see the Sox lose Devers because they signed anyone else for $22M right now. And that includes Judge, who is not the overall hitter Devers is or will become, and who I seriously doubt will be as productive in the next decade...
  6. But agents will insist that Anthony Rendon is a fair third baseman.
  7. A trade would presumably yield a better return than a comp pick, but it would also signal to Red Sox Nation that the team was giving up on resigning hometown hero Raffy Devers. If they keep him for one more year and let him walk, at least they could pretend they were trying to sign him up until the bitter end. Which scenario looks better to the public: pushing him out the door a year early, or him walking through it on his own?
  8. MLB Channel panel called out the Red Sox for "not acting like a big market team." Yonder Alonzo did a thorough segment on why the Sox should lock up Devers. Dan Plesac made a great case for overpaying to keep Bogaerts. MLB extra base hits, 2019-2022: 1. Devers 264, 2. Semien 248, 3. Ramirez 244, 4. Alonso 241, 5. Freeman 239 MLB shortstop WAR 2018-2022: 1. Bogaerts 23.4, 2. Turner 22.9, 3. Lindor 21.8, 4. Correa 21.1, 5. Anderson 16.3
  9. Nimmo had a good year, but did you know that Average Alex Verdugo had more hits, doubles, RBIs and a higher BA? Doogie is also three years younger, but does anyone think he's worthy of a $20 mil AAV? Or is Nimmo just lucky this winter he's the best outfielder money can buy not named Judge?
  10. Trading Devers this winter would be the worst possible scenario for Boston and Red Sox fans. It would show -- yet again -- that the Sox are unwilling to pay fair market value to their homegrown stars, the faces of the franchise. It would also send the same message to all up-and-coming prospects, and to future free agents. And to teammates in the clubhouse, dugouts and bullpens, it would confirm that management is unwilling to use its resources to provide them with the best possible support towards achieving the ultimate goal of a professional sports team: winning.
  11. And Story.
  12. I'm ready for Devers' payday to get gross. Losing all the Red Sox top homegrown faces would really rot.
  13. Every season the Yankee fans I know target one hated scapegoat they can blame for not winning it all that they want dumped off their team. Gallo was this year's winner by far. They'd love one more reason to make fun of Boston.
  14. I have to put this out there on the world wide web, at least for my own sanity: All-or-nothing Gallo will really move the needle for Sox fans... to empty.
  15. Maybe it's the weak free agent class, but I just don't see Nimmo as an elite outfielder worthy of a superstar salary... $24M per? Is he really worth two Benintendis or two-and-a-half Kikes? I'm all about guys getting fair market value, but if someone is willing to pay Nimmo that much, I don't think it will be Bloom. Not when someone like Rodon can maybe be had for that kind of contract. The Nimmo value makes taking a shot at Conforto even more palatable.
  16. Correa does not have a QO, so think like Bloom: we can replace Bogaerts with a younger Correa and get a draft pick for Xander signing elsewhere.
  17. The Red Sox choose not to resign Bogaerts nor Devers, and then don't reinvest this offseason in bonafide star baseball players... ... based on everything we know about Bloom -- and not Henry, who hired him -- evaluate the above statement with the more likely adjective: possible or probable.
  18. In on the pitchers. I'm already on record for wanting Eovaldi back, and Rogers as a bounce-back closer (All-Star just two years ago). Senga throws 101 mph. Conforto is only intriguing. Can he return to a 25 homer, .350 OBP guy? He's been a negative dWAR outfielder the past six seasons in a row. As I've said before: at this point in the Bloom Era, Red Sox fans just deserve more than hoping for yet another rehabbing ballplayer to make a comeback contribution...
  19. Free agents ineligible for Qualifying Offers... any of these guys would be much more appealing to Bloom and his luxurious taxpaying ilk (my bold-faced choices aren't that bold...). José Abreu (White Sox), Brandon Belt (Giants), Carlos Correa (Twins), Nelson Cruz (Nationals), Zack Greinke (Royals), Kenley Jansen (Braves), Craig Kimbrel (Dodgers), AJ Pollock (White Sox), David Robertson (Phillies), Carlos Santana (Mariners), Will Smith (Astros), Noah Syndergaard (Phillies), Justin Verlander (Astros). Elvis Andrus (White Sox), Josh Bell (Padres), Andrew Benintendi (Yankees), Brandon Drury (Padres), Joey Gallo (Dodgers), Trey Mancini (Astros), David Peralta (Rays), Tommy Pham (Red Sox), José Quintana (Cardinals), Taylor Rogers (Brewers), Christian Vázquez (Astros) The Tallstop question: does Bloom settle for Andrus as a placeholder or go all building block on Correa?
  20. I know. But there are only so many #1 and #2 free agents available before we have to start using prospect capital in trades. I'm not opposed to the Sox using both the budget and farm to improve the rotation, because it's the key back to respectability. Bello and Pivetta are the only two projected starters who are entirely healthy, and most people rate each as a #4 or #5 (though Bello's stuff is as good as anyone else's). Bloom can stockpile as many #5s as he wants, just so long as he doesn't skimp on top quality, too. There's always the chance in a rebuild that a front office adds to its roster just to field a big league team, and then bills it as improvement. Depth is definitely essential, but a staff deep in #5s is destined for the depths of the division.
  21. It is for me, because by now I know better than to count on any injured or rehabbing Sox projected for the '23 starting rotation. I will take anything I can get as a bonus from Sale/Paxton/Whitlock/Houck etc., but the last thing Boston needs is another pitcher trying to make a comeback. Want a free agent arm from the Dodgers? Sign Tyler Anderson, who won 15 games last season. Heaney was only durable enough to go 4-4 for a club that won 111 regular season games. If the Sox lose Wacha and Eovaldi, they realistically need to add three new starters to the rotation to sniff respectability. I'm not opposed to deGrom, but he's also damaged goods, so I'd target Bassitt and Anderson, too. Or Rodon. There's a lot of dough coming off the books, and even more when Bogaerts signs elsewhere.
  22. A Heaney signing would just be a continuation of Bloom's low-risk, bungee-cord, we're-bored acquisitions (the kind of move some in the industry think he can't survive another winter doing). But true fans will know we're really in trouble when rumors start circulating about star players and the Red Sox' "interest." Then it will be time to take a long winter's nap.
  23. ... as they always are, with fans who don't snort between the lines. And yet, Sam Kennedy will still be running for Speaker of the House.
  24. But what GM worth his Wong will give up anything decent "for just one year of Devers?" Brusdar, I see you in the morning Brusdar, asleepin next to me Brusdar, let the memory of the evening Be the first thing that you think of...
  25. Lugo is not lights-out, but sometimes lights-flickering (three '22 Mets postseason games: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K). At least he's a big league reliever... Re. Heaney: a last-place rotation doesn't really need another #5 starter. I'd rather bring back Wacha or Eovaldi; they've both proven they can pitch in Boston, and can't cost that much more. If Bloom signs Heaney, it'd better be at the same press conference that introduces Chris Bassitt.
