It's a good thing those Sox prospects don't need thought partners to decipher Breslow's terminology. Just in case, I just went on Amazon and ordered each of them Molecular Physics and Elements of Quantum Chemistry : Introduction to Experiments and Theory Quick book summary: "It covers not only current theoretical approaches but also new developments such as high-resolution two-photon spectroscopy, ultrashort pulse spectroscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy, optical investigation of single molecules in condensed phase, electroluminescence, and light-emitting diodes." That should cover it. -

Today there is still hope in the Nation. No Yamamoto in the AL East means the fifth-best team still has a chance to finish fourth -- or even third -- if proper changes are made soon. Now is Brez Time: time to sign some starting pitchers, and swing some serious deals; all the Red Sox need are a second baseman who can hit and field, plus 57 home runs that they had from Turner, Duvall and Verdugo (depending on how many HRs are hit by O'Neill in the dozens of games he'll play). The big splash has to come from a blockbuster trade that the front office of countless veteran execs and VPs have been cooking up for a month now... Let's GO!!! -
Haven't we been saying that since Bloom sent Graterol back after confusing his medicals with a stanza of "Beowulf"? Just give us something, Red Sox, in a trade that doesn't always have to include a starting big league outfielder... There's got to be some arms available that are more than appetizers (though if it has to be just a few lopped limbs of calamari, at least throw in a few hot cherry peppers).

I don't know if Cora would ok trading Pivetta. If it's true that AC has other clubs interested in paying him Counsell dough, then maybe no other player is responsible for upping his profile so much. Remember, when the Sox had the hottest team at the start of last summer, it was Pivetta as Bulk Guy who was making Cora's opener rotation succeed.

The point about the last five Red Sox years isn't really revolving CBOs, but how ownership has changed this century. And it's not just about dropping out as big time recruiters in free agency, but also not paying to keep established stars in Boston. The wisdom or outrage of being outbid for Pedro and Lester was debatable, since both starters had turned the corner on Henry's magic number of age 30. In hindsight, the one worth longterm investment would've been D.Lowe, though most Sox fans didn't predict that at the time (having endured his days of inconsistent closing). But Boston always found a way to keep its best -- Papi, Tek, Pedey -- while knowing when to move on from others, like Nomar and Ellsbury. Everything changed with Mookie.

Were Sox fans misled about Breslow coming in and taking charge of an established front office? At his introductory presser he certainly sounded like someone ready to shake things up... ... or were we just aching for massive change from the Bloom Era that we overlooked the obvious clonage of old CBO to new CBO? Of course, we all read the Tom Werner "Full Throttle" quote -- but someone should've asked if he meant Kawasaki Ninjas or mini bikes.

Ambivalence here. Starters like Stroman and Imanaga will still improve the rotation (even if it's not a world-beater) and also help the bullpen -- by pushing guys like Whitlock and Houck into more prominent relief roles when Jansen and Martin show more age; which is inevitable, even though fans assume they'll automatically repeat '23 success. Two more viable and dependable starters should also provide more stability for fielders honing their craft, and take some pressure off youngsters trying to establish themselves on O and D.

Is Sandoval on the trading block for some reason? Otherwise, I'm not sure why the Angels -- always hurting for pitching, and who just lost their ace -- would want to give up on a 27-year-old starter with four years of control... maybe, if they're in total rebuild and really like the prospects coming back? Is Sandoval and one year of an ok RHH infielder worth dealing a guy projected with five-tool potential (who missed most of last year with injury)? If the Sox aren't going to be a legit contender, why not just keep Bleis and Yorke and let them develop? The latter may be ready for a call-up mid-summer, fill the hole at 2B, and become part of the future core of sustainedglass...

Not necessarily -- often, splitters, curves and change-ups are thrown by design to hit the dirt. If a guy leaves one up or hangs one, and gets taken deep, that's a lack of command. Schilling's goal was to make batters take strikes in the zone, and swing at pitches out of the zone. A lot of it has to do with delivery and deception...

Some people like to say that posters never change their minds, but if you've noticed I have recently stopped using the L-word (not Losers) when referring to 75% of the Red Sox standings during the Bloom Era. From now on, our beloved, beheaded Sox will be known only as the fifth-best team in the greatest division in baseball history that hasn't won a World Series since 2018.

Only for utter flops like Boston. Teams that went deep into the postseason played for another month. Any Red Sox club that won 13 games in the playoffs for a title would be remembered as an all-time great by their fans. Try finding any Dodgers fan who hates the season their team traded for and signed a Hall of Famer in his prime, and then won a championship. And there are many posters who care less about the regular season -- as long as one's favorite team qualifies for the postseason... because then anything can happen! But let's not call them hypocrites for dismissing the results of any tournament, even extra long ones, like in 2020.

But let's not pretend for one second that the 2020 Red Sox weren't historically, abysmally bad, and just a club in a slump for two months. Sure, guys like JD and Beni checked out, Mookie went west, and the dislikes of Chavis and Peraza roamed the diamond. But the pitching... MLB 2020 Team Pitching: Most Hits Allowed, Most Home Runs Served UP, Most Walks Issued, Most Runs Allowed Per Game (non-Coors column) -- Boston. Worst FIP, Worst WHIP, Worst LIP (Losers In Pitching) sinks ship -- Boston.

The Dodgers also won the World Series in the strike-shortened 1981 season. They made the playoffs by finishing 1st in their 57-game first "half" with a 36-21 record for a .632 winning percentage... then finished 4th in the second "half" (the Reds had the best combined overall mark in the NL West, but finished 2nd in each "half" and didn't even make the playoffs)... LA won the postseason with a 10-6 record and had an overall W-L percentage of .579. In 2020, the Dodgers finished 1st in their 60-game season with a big league best-record of 43-17, .717%,... then won the postseason with 13-5, .722% (the most post Ws ever required for a ring). Their overall mark: 56-22 .718% (in 78 gms, nearly half a full season). For perspective, the all-time '18 Sox: 108-54 .667, 11-3 .786, overall 119-57 .676. If LA was accepted as the '81 world champs in that wack-a-mole season, then 2020 is also legit.
