    ... even with a five-time Silver Slugger shortstop whose former team only made the playoffs five times, and won two world championships, in his 10 AL seasons? Edit: in his first World Series, he actually played third base... for the first time... as a 20-year-old.

    Because every offseason outlook of my favorite team the past half decade has sucked so badly, I'm entitled to post an opinion. The Committee isn't about to invest $30M per year on any pitcher that needs fixing. Bailey may have to work his magic on prospects and the next crap of rehab projects. Breslow can't confirm this publicly, though, until maybe next month, when Red Sox PR has told us he might talk to the media again. At least we'll get fan questions and canned answers from the stage at the Winter Weekend...

    You-get-what-you-pay-for doesn't always work in baseball for the most expensive free agents... but it usually does for the least expensive bargains. At least that's what we've seen in Boston the past five years. And don't bother to list Bloom's minor victories that saved a million here or there so he could blow it on other failures. Contrast with Dombrowski's Phillies, and how much more fun Philadelphia fans have had the past few years. No rings -- though the Phils would've been in the World Series two seasons in a row if not for one Dombro mistake, forgetting Kimbrel in the '18 postseason (and good luck this year, Baltimore).

    2017? Moneyball was published in 2003, and the movie came out in 2011. Here's John Henry's quote from the latter in the Billy Beane interview: JH: "Anybody who is not tearing their team down right now -- and rebuilding it -- using your model... they're dinosaurs." Henry hired Beane (who soon backed out), pivoted to Epstein, and we know the rest... Yet most of the Red Sox front office still-intact-for-decades bragged in a 2020 tweet about resetting the luxury tax. Whoop dee dog doo. After spending big on championship players from Epstein to Dombrowski, Henry finally transitioned to his Moneyball dream (please don't reply how Bloom's Sox had a top 5 payroll -- when the bulk of his budget was already burned paying money owed from previous regimes, or blown on Chaim's short-term contracts for mediocrity). What it has done for ownership: 1. put more dough in their pockets; 2. put more of their teams at the bottom of the standings. And now free agency risks any remaining Brontosaurus burgers to go extinct. Does Henry's paleontology dept. really need warnings that they're the endangered species?

    If good free agents cost too much for Red Sox ownership these days (seventeen hundred days, but who's counting), it seems more likely that this offseason will be defined by some kind of significant trade, in all its splashiness... ... though the water displacement might look more like little ripple rings at the end of a skimmed stone, instead of your drunk uncle belly-flopping at the 4th of July barbecue.

    Not all of us. Never liked the guy, after he threw at Nunez for swinging too hard. Arrogant pitcher -- so when he still had a fastball in pre-suck Sox days, was it ok for a batter to chuck his bat at Kluber if the pitch was thrown too hard?

    When surveyed, the Sox' front office admitted they learned all their German from watching reruns of "Hogan's Heroes" and reading 60's comic books like "Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos." It's not like they know nothing... but it's easy to see how a guy like Snell! Snell! Snell! would turn off the somnambulant owners and their Breslow-moving committee...

    We can only hope if Paxton returns and wins another Pitcher of the Month award next spring, that Breslow won't trade him at the deadline -- especially if the Sox are the fifth-best team in the AL East for the fourth time in half a decade.

    Personally, I think a Lackey comp, as far as the expectations vs. actual performance (not WAR numbers, posters) -- for such a high-priced investment at the time -- is Dice K. Both had their moments and helped win rings; both had their injured years where they didn't help much at all. Overall? Depends on one's definition of value and worth (at least Dice K seemed like a decent guy to root for).

    Yes, and I've felt that way and said so, since the Mookie trade. It's still a shock that ownership decided not to pay market value to keep the Red Sox' best homegrown Hall of Famer in his prime the past 50 years in Boston. It was and will always be an affront to the loyal fans of New England, a message that clearly shows owners no longer committed to fielding the best entertainment product possible. Fiscal limits be damned -- fan favorites connect customers to the show, and make it more fun to follow good guys their kids can grow up rooting for. And those kids are the core of sustained interest in a sports team... SELL.

    A guy worth discussing. My first reaction was comparing him to righty power hitters the Sox once recruited like Jack Clark or Andre Dawson, when they were cooked. But Teoscar is only 31 (Clark and Dawson were still stars at 31, back when 31 was older than it is now, with modern training/arthoscopy/nutrition). Teoscar is a two-time Silver Slugger whose Similar Batters on bb-ref include ex-Red Sox Tony Conigliaro, Hunter Renfroe and Yoenis Cespedes. And THern hasn't had the pleasure of hitting in Fenway Park for 81 games a season. See how optimistic a poster can be in the dread of winter?

    Unless the pitcher has a really good arm, then they could convert him to shortstop in the minors, and not trade him for pitching.

    My favorite was "The Hunt" where some old-timer and his loyal dog hike through the afterlife (the raccoon won) looking for a place where they're welcome. The guy wisely stayed away from the gate where fake St. Pete refused his dog entry. They finally reach the real heaven, where a World Series isn't guaranteed every year, but the front office is actually sincere about building a roster for sustained contention...

    For the projections of what it will cost for Giolito, I'd rather just sign both Lorenzen and Manaea. None of them are that good, but might as well double your chances of one being good -- or at least eating some innings. As for trades, all the big names left -- Bieber, Cease, Burnes -- had metrics pointing down last year. For the complete overhaul needed, I'd go big on Framber, if available (not trading Casas) -- Astros will want pitching back, so the Sox won't get him, anyway.

    Maybe. But if it's true that Breslow might talk to the press again in January, then all we're really left with is Sam Kennedy, in the line of liar. Brez may be realizing that the market once again has exceeded any spending limits from his bosses (stuck in the 20teens). But Brez is also smart enough not to make the same Bloom mistakes and answer frequent media/fan questions with ******** and inanities.

    This just in, on the Yankees website aka MLB.com: "Yanks to pivot to Plan B as Yamamoto heads to Dodgers" ... all the other clubs will pivot to Plan C or Plan D -- except the Red Flops (they'll stick with their sustained Plan F).
