  1. No, because at the time it looked unnecessary, when he was still under contract for one more year; the Sox gambled that he'd fully recover and be his usual dominant self for an entire season -- which would've made him even more money for a Cy Young ace on the open market. Every pitcher is an injury risk. You can't win if you don't pay them.
  2. Is Yamamoto too risky to sign for the first big move from a new CBO? Yo Yama may be the most hyped and yet unproven free agent right now, but Red Sox fans remember Dice K, not to mention Yoshida (a good but certainly not great ballplayer). Plus, does anyone recall last year's WBC? When was a Yamamoto start ever must-see TV? The most enduring moment of the entire tournament and pro baseball season in general in 2023 was with Ohtani on the mound, striking out Mike Trout to win the world.
  3. This has been said before, but the lowball Red Sox tried to lock up Betts at least twice -- each time offering a contract his market value had exceeded -- before they realized he was adamant about getting what he deserved. Once they knew Mookie was serious, they extended Sale and Bogey -- who both accepted lowball Red Sox offers below what they may have earned in free agency. Sale got hurt (and maybe already was), so we'll never know about him, but X certainly did ok for himself last winter. Eovaldi also accepted his first big payday from Dombro -- which, like JD's, was a true market value contract: $17M AAV for a good starter (even though a few posters who still complain about his health forget he is a pitcher).
  4. Giving up cheap dingers to RF in Woo is an important stage in development. It prepares them for WTF moments in the Bronx.
  5. JD was a huge success in 2018, but his contract also had a huge bearing on the doom of the Bloom Sox. Certainly, there are Red Sox fans who remember hoping JD would opt out twice: 1. so they could keep Mookie (no less than Sam discussed publicly how hard it would be to keep both), and 2. so they could sign Schwarber to DH instead. Either one of those scenarios would have changed Red Sox history -- not necessarily with banners, but with the kind of star power that keeps teams relevant, fans entertained, and maybe even new free agents more interested in Boston...
  6. The only one I can't see is Wacha. I know someone is already typing money and respect, but there should be at least a handful of decent clubs that will give him both, after his last two seasons. But if you're a once-fragile starter looking for a good payday before your 30s catch up to you, would you choose to pitch in climes closer to a cold rainforest or always-sunny San Diego?
  7. Yamamoto gets posted Monday. If Breslow sees early on that other big markets are sending Brinks Truck convoys to Uber him, I'd like to see the Sox swing immediate side deals. When everyone else is busy falling all over themselves for a guy who has never thrown an MLB pitch, Brez should swoop in with a big Burnes trade and make Montgomery an offer he can't refuse. Let's GO.
  8. He also tried the ghost of Mondesi, but every grounder went right through him...
  9. Most Home Runs 45 JD Martinez 2017 43 Javy Lopez 2003 43 Matt Williams '94 40 Hank Aaron 1973 40 Ken Griffey Jr '94 40 TROUT, two years ago (when he didn't play half his games in Fenway)
  10. Does anyone seriously think Alex Cora was happy to see Xander Bogaerts leave, so he could play his favorite binky at shortstop? Or maybe he had no other choices, when the replacements his inept CBO recruited kept turning out to be damaged goods...
  11. A lot of MLB trades the last few days; good to see the Sox get involved. Nothing against Pablo, a bright spot on the roster last year, but second base seems wide open... Is Jonathan India a fit in Boston? Let's see... 26 years old, some righty pop, negative dWAR -- all the same as Urias -- and BB-Ref Most Similar batters: 1. Estrada, 2. Gimenez, 3. Rengifo... 6. Luis Urias!
  12. No love for Steve Pearce? Baylor crunched the second-most important homer of the '86 postseason (Gm 6 ALCS)... it would've been third, if Hendu's extra-inning blast in Shea stood up... ... if only McNamara let Stapleton replace DON at first base; that's right, Baylor -- the AL pennant winners' leading HR man -- should've played 1B in the four NL games instead of the immobile Buckner (who batted third every game, led the Sox in at bats, and was last in the Series in slugging with a slothful .188).
  13. I looked hard but couldn't find the opening for Uncoordinator. Then I fell down.
  14. An intern just forwarded your post to Tom Werner, and he replied: "VROOM-VROOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
  15. Whichever year the rotation all wore t-shirts that said, "Who's the ace? Don't look at me; I only act like an ace when I'm (you're) drunk"
  16. Facts like the one who pardoned him served on the Warren Commission (would it be critical or reality to now call it the notorious or preposterous Warren Commission?)... We also can't prove the guy who succeeded the quitter was specifically chosen based on giving a pardon, but even if that underlies the critical time, it's now accepted that they are all underliars...
  17. Only if you give away a future Cy Young winner to the Yankees -- for a Danny Cater.
  18. Maybe it speaks to his potential for ascendance. Or to be abducted by a UAP...
  19. Comments from Chicago on the White Sox-Braves trade? A 5-for-1 (the one being a reliever), with the return including a former All-Star starting pitcher who's only 26, plus Nicky Lopez, a glove-first second baseman that should improve the D -- the stated goal of GM Getz (do either of these players sound like something Breslow may be interested: a starter he and Bailey could maybe fix, plus a 2B?) What Getz got for a pitcher with a 6.79 ERA may not be matched by Breslow dealing the older Chris Martin, but it may be worth shopping the AL's 12th-place finisher in the Cy Young voting.
  20. We know what really matters: the school systems. It's all about standardized test scores... and those teachers, who want summers off every year of their careers. If they were really earning their salaries, they'd motivate students to top tier scores (including new citizens mandated to take the test even if they don't speak a single word of English).
  21. I agree, Irish -- we can't trust any of these guys because unlike the fans, who just want to be entertained by pro athletes that at least pretend they care as much as we do, all the media and front office types have their own agendas. Some are trying to outscoop each other, others are bored covering also-rans (so they initiate controversy), and the brass will BS anyone for a buck. But one thing we have to accept: all those in the business are closer to the truths than any of us think we know -- they're just not in a position to share all of them with us, lest they lose their positions...
  22. No sense in trying to make this board more important than it it. That's lowercase talksox.com, dammit. And posters here are always suggesting dumb ideas the Sox always ignore... like make deadline trades for Montgomery and Sutton, and if you care more about the prospects, then maximize Paxton's value before he gets hurt again!
  23. Here's another one: according to BTV, if the Red Sox just took both Burnes (32) and Yellich (-35) off the Brewers' hands, Milwaukee would still owe Boston a minor league infielder like Eric Brown Jr. or Mike Boeve (each at 2.5). Then the site could be called Baseball Giveaway Values.
  24. The only difference in the Breslow Era and the Bloom Era so far is the news didn't end with, "Currently rehabbing from minor surgery, a blackened big toenail and a bruised ego, Olivarez should be ready to pitch on flat ground by the trade deadline... in 2025."
  25. We already have the B's and C's in Beantown, and the D's were in the World Series. Now that they're nowhere, and already making trades, maybe F Troop will deal their WAR leaders, Gelof and Sears.
