  1. The worst thing that can happen for the Red Sox in Baltimore isn't whether the O's spend big on pitching to optimize their window. The worst thing is if the Orioles' new owners swoop in and lock down the likes of Rutschman, Henderson, Rodriguez, Holliday and Cowser longterm.
  2. According to Tom Werner, the Red Sox lead the division in imaginary wins. One of his front office wizards told him they could've won 10 more games with a normal defense last year. Ten more wins and the Sox are sniffing the postseason... so the plan is finally clear. Why spend big trying to be dominant, when "just normal" can get you a wild card?
  3. Ya, it does look like the rotation is a little short. Don't worry, it's still... the month when teams report to Florida.
  4. If you were in the Chicago area in 1973, you must have loved Wilbur Wood when he won 24 games! If you were in the Chicago area in 1973, you must have hated Wilbur Wood when he lost 20 games! ... of course, Wood only worked 359.1 innings pitched in '73. The year before, he threw 376.2 -- which is more than the Red Sox' top three starters combined in IP, half a century later.
  5. The thing is, the Red Sox' starting rotation is so bad, it could really use a few more starters who are just average. Ya know, just to get through another season. According to bb-ref, the AL's average Earned Run Average in 2023 -- per 180 IP was 4.28. Of course, no Sox' pitcher came close to 180 IP, but Giolito did it for three other teams combined. The Red Sox have exactly one starter who was basically average last year: Bello at 4.24. Next is Crawford at 4.51 in 23 starts, followed by Pivetta at 4.66 in 16 starts, then Houck 5.01 in 21 and Whitlock 5.23 in 10. Sale was average at 4.30 in 20 starts. Paxton was 4.50 in 19. But both are gone... ... replaced by Giolito: 4.88 in 33 starts.
  6. Discussing pitcher W-L records here is like using a blow dryer on the six hairs still growing on each side of my skull above my ears. If you were John Henry's CBO, would you really want to waste millions of dollars on a guy who can give you two dozen starts a year -- which instead, you can cover with a handful of minimum- wage openers picked off the waiver wire?
  7. Trolls are irritating to some because they were the first to wear pink or purple hair (from what I recall throwing up). My sister had a small collection of them. I had a plastic Ratfink ring. That was a real frantic creature -- his red overalls sported a big gold R.F. to remind him. He may still be banned from all toy forums.
  8. Dude, this is a Red Sox forum. Go read fWAR and watch F-Troop.
  9. Let's see: Lucas 6'6"... Roki 6'4" -- nope!
  10. I'm just glad if he's good, he's gone. Don't all sustained contenders do that to their starting rotations?
  11. A lot of posts about paying market value for a starting pitcher to lead the rotation. Some fans may think any debate for this need is sad when it comes to the Boston Red Sox. To that, I just say... ... PGA, baby! (POOR GUY ABSOLVED)
  12. Schwarber makes $20M AAV. Yoshida gets $18.6M. Forget WAR -- which guy do more fans want to pay to see? I always thought the biggest blunder was the Yankees not signing Schwarber. With his pull power in that ballpark with that short porch in right -- for a guy who already looks like Babe Ruth (at least jogging around the bases)...
  13. It's February and soon Spring Training. THAT is always a positive. However, if Duran is anointed the full-time centerfielder, it's going to be a short season. As in, he will shortly be replaced.
  14. Schwarber is also Bloom's most costly blunder. Over 100 homers the past two years, including two postseasons, which he homered his team into. In '22 and '23, Schwarbs would've lured tons of younger fans who love the longball into Fenway. Tom Werner wouldn't even have to offer student discounts -- just think of the profits!
  15. Story's elbow was damaged goods when Bloom signed him, only after all the other GMs stayed away, like they did with Wacha (who smart teams saved millions on instead by using openers for two dozen games a year).
  16. I got some answers right here: even if they kept Betts and couldn't sign other talent (as if), it would've been better for fans. Because we all know now the Sox weren't going to reinvest all that Mookie money replacing him with other star players anyway.
  17. Don't forget JD Martinez. Six years ago Boras said he was worth $200M -- with cost of living increases, what does Scott want for his All-Star DH now?
  18. He just needs to eat some apricots to keep from constraining.
  19. You the fibber for calling me sir. At a young age I was benighted by Alfred E. Newman, and ever since have known National Lampoon as a patriotic eel.
  20. None of us can ever know for sure if they're not trying to improve, but it's fairly obvious they arrogantly disagree with winners of the industry that accept the adage "you get what you pay for." That could be a frugal business model, but stubbornly refusing to keep most of your top talent or replace it by spending budget (and taxes) or prospect capital just keeps leading to failure. Don't worry, we have the Romdawg. The worst part is that no one really thinks Gonzalez is good, only that if a regular goes on the IL, it'll be better to bring up Gonzo, instead an actual future star from the minors who the Sox will have to get rid of a year earlier when the guy is about to hit free agency.
  21. This is it, Hugh -- you just summed up the past five Red Sox years in one sentence -- except for one verb: it IS bad because they didn't make any moves to really replace those guys.
  22. It's not always about winning, and plus, there are affordable tickets for students. They don't come to follow the players, anyway -- just to party.
  23. I look at the latest news as a continuation of a long line of Sox Suckitude: Red Sox losing, Betts to LA, Schwarber to Philly, ERod to Detroit, Bogaerts to SD, Eovaldi to Texas, Turner to Tor, Wacha to anywhere else... I threw in Wacha, because I know there are a few miserable fans here just dying to cite stats again to show why he'd be such a detriment to Boston's stellar Starting Five.
  24. Can't you just see all 425 Assistants to the Vice Presidents in a front office meeting nodding, saying, "Now THAT'S the roster continuity we know our fans can root for -- just think of all the season tickets we can sell to loyal rooters of clean jerseys with no faces in them!" At least Bloom wouldn't have swapped any prospects to nab Romy Gonzalez, the Red Sox' latest prize offseason acquisition. Gonzalez, recently cut by the 101-loss White Sox, has been amazingly consistent: in three seasons in MLB, he has a negative WAR every year. He can't hit (career .222 BA, .600 OPS, 36% K-rate) and can't field (career negative 0.4 dWAR)... but he did go to the University of Miami, same as Alex Cora (rut roh). The Romdawg's career WBR is -0.8...
