  1. Eovaldi, Price, Porcello, and of course Sale -- all had issues in '19. ERod didn't, and he pitched less than the rest in the '18 postseason... (and even recorded less outs than Kelly and Kimbrel). When 80% of the starting rotation of the greatest team in franchise history all hits a wall at the same time, it's probably more than coincidence.
  2. There's a legend in the Far East about a warrior once called Dice-K... oops -- smaller ball.
  3. Posters have been clinging to that once-in-a-franchise hope since I joined this forum after the '19 season. "We" -- as in talksox -- need to move on. Ortiz, Pedroia, Ellsbury and Lester aren't the returning core of any Red Sox team the past five years. If a miracle is to happen in '24 and Boston has a winning record and makes the playoffs, it won't be because of comebacks from rehabbing veterans with something to prove. It will be because of the development of young players establishing themselves into bonafide big leaguers -- and even All-Stars. Whether that's realistic or not -- the front office is telling us that's all we got. So let's root root-root for the HOMEGROWN.
  4. Nailed it -- this has all been a subliminal set-up by an ivy-league front office... all leading up to the 20-year anniversary of the 2004 Curse-breakers. Lest anyone forget the enduring image of that '04 World Series: the Red Moon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_2004_lunar_eclipse
  5. Pitchers and Catchers report to SPRING training in NINE days. Appropriately, for our lovable Red Sox, that's on Valentine's Day. But it may feel more like Halloween... ... because for those who worry the pitching staff is incomplete, Dr. Frankenstein Bailey is infusing new life to last year's dead starters, sewing fresh arms and attitudes onto cadavers in the rotation. So put away those pitchforks and torches... for now.
  6. Without a doubt. The most intense and impactful postseason series are the most indelible on our memories. I still recall details and can see big moments from many Sox' playoffs from this century. I barely remember the actual games from the World Series of '04 and '07. One poster's Top 5 Sox Series this century: 1. '04 ALCS - greatest comeback/payback/choke of all-time. 2. '03 ALCS - worst ending ever, cumulative effect, after '78/'86/'99 etc. 3. '18 WS - hardly a blow-out; Sox won in 5 exciting games helped by three HUGE pinch-hits by Devers, Moreland and Nunez 4. '18 ALCS - highly entertaining offensive and defensive battle between two heavy-weights 5. '18 ALDS - start spreading the news: 16-1 W at the Stadium... but every other game was a total stress-fest Obviously, '18 is the most recent fresh in my mind, but none of those were easy. Honorable mention: '13 ALCS/WS, '07 ALCS, '21 WC, and the underrated '03 ALDS
  7. If you think posters here are bitter this winter -- after the last deadline, after the last winter, after the deadline before that, after the... Dombrowski Era -- you should see the comments section of the Boston Globe article about Epstein's return. It has to be about 80% negative, mainly because Theo can't pitch! Forget about any bridges; the Red Sox burned all theirs already -- and used TNT to level all the concrete piles, posts, footings and piers... plus, they stocked the river with crocodiles and piranhas.
  8. I noticed you didn't mention Schilling, which is even a hard name to type these days. As far as Fenway flags, both he and Foulke sacrificed careers for rings in Boston. But Price will always be connected with the unforgivable Betts trade.
  9. Fans aren't going to buy more tickets just to see Theo waving at them from the owner's box. There has to be the acquisition of an impact player to go with this...
  10. Doubters cite his Hard-hit Rate when he puts his Balls in Play, though he's a zero Win Probability Added for Offensive Posters. If we all met and trouble started, the biggest risk would be measured in Exit Velocity... on our stationary bicycles.
  11. Have to believe an impending move, concurrent with the Epstein news, will answer Baltimore's sale and trade for Burnes... soon.
  12. Price was a poor loser on Tampa when Big Papi took him deep. He had a good two-week run in '18, but his career postseason ERA was 4.62. For the Red Sox, he couldn't beat the Yankees, then he couldn't pitch in Yankee Stadium, then he couldn't pitch night games, then he couldn't pitch because of a video game injury. He disrespected Eck, and in my opinion was one of the reasons the Sox traded Mookie. That price was not worth the cost.
  13. No fans in '19 knew the residual damage on Sox pitchers from winning the previous postseason by throwing a month longer in high leverage situations out of regular routines. But it's a good bet the manager, coaches, and players on the field, in the dugout and in the bullpen knew. And it's not like the truth was going to come out then, lest it give opponents an edge (and that includes opposing GMs, looking to exploit a need for trade reinforcements). Nor is it likely for any pitcher to confess now, lest it sound like an excuse. It's no surprise the Sox' best starter in '19 was the one most rested from pitching the least amount in the '18 postseason: ERod.
  14. Merloni said on EEI today Montgomery absolutely changes everything if signed by Boston. Such a move, he noted -- as many here have -- will let Houck and Whitlock go back to the bullpen. Then again, new pitching management supposedly favors pitchers with velocity... like Fujinaro, who throws 100 mph -- the guy the Mets just signed for $3.5 million. Too bad the Sox couldn't scrape up that much in their offseason budget.
  15. Unless there's a plague and he feels pressured to sign. Remember, the Dodgers only traded for one year of Mookie -- not 12; that's why Bloom's return was so great for a Hall of Famer about to enter his prime and have multiple MLB-leading WAR years, receive more MVP votes than anyone else, and lead his club to perpetual 100-win seasons. I just proof read what I typed and got see sick.
  16. Don't forget when Theo joined the Cubs in 2012, he did so with the understanding that the rebuild (tank) would take five years. Chicago actually lost more games his first two years than in the two seasons before Epstein took over. There was no bridge, either. Theo's Cubs won 61, 66, 73 -- then bam, 97, 103 and World Series rings!
  17. Any Red Sox fans doubting this move, already knows the answer to this question: which owner of the Red Sox has had the most success ruining a baseball team? Now, replace the "i" with another "n" .... which current owner of the Red Sox has had the most success running a baseball team?
  18. You mean, will anyone be surprised in a year or so when Breslow's title is renamed as General Manager of Systemic Pitching Dynamics... while Theo's advisory role advises who to sign and who to trade? Not for a second. Like Sam just said, "Theo is trusted here." (unlike Green Eggs and Sam-I-Am)
  19. I just can't see Theo deciding after all these years of success, that he's looking forward to buying into the Red Sox just in time for their tank... (plus, a small cut in the profits on sales of warm beer in plastic cups).
  20. Because there must be tons of posters on Brewerstalk.com today insisting Milwaukee could still re-sign him next winter...
  21. Like I said, it's not because we'd want him, but if a team is giving up their best player and best pitcher, you can bet they're going to insist we also take their worst contract. If the White Sox make a big move, it'll be to settle all family business.
  22. Now that's the SPLASH we've been waiting for all winter.
  23. Traded Kike back to the Dodgers.
  24. The good old Red Sox would be countering the Burnes trade by soon announcing an even bigger blockbuster. BTV accepted: Anthony, Duran, Houck to White Sox... for Cease, Robert, Benintendi and AAA pitcher Nick Nastrini. In the real world, it's doubtful Chicago would do this deal, unless Boston throws in another good arm like Schreiber or Wikelman Gonzalez. Taking back Beni's big contract would make it appealing for the Pale Hose, but if this is truly the real world -- and not the fantasy that BoSox fans lived before the Bloom Era -- we all know the Red Sox aren't taking back any big money obligations... ... or even extending a guy like Cease -- geez, not until they're good enough to pay good enough players to make them good enough to justify good investments.
  25. It's hard to imagine anyone paying what it will cost to buy the Sox without the intent to actually invest in the product on the field (like the last time new owners took over). Put it this way: there can't be many rich TV moguls who'd rather focus on "the Fenway experience", and instead spend on say, less soggy buns for the franks, or student giveaways like free posters of the team logo.
