    The only guarantee is a guy like Dombrowski will keep making hundreds of moves for his guesses, generating fan interest by always giving them renewed hope. Dombro might cost owners money in the short term, but what's the value of sustained fan excitement? No baseball city in America has had more fun in the past three years than Philadelphia.

    Losing Martin and Slaten wounded the pen; not replacing them with at least one big league reliever by now has killed the pen. Dombrowski in Philadelphia has the best record in the majors -- and a bullpen where five guys (including All-Star Matt Strahm) have thrown in at least 40 games -- and he just traded for Estevez, a closer with a 0.73 WHIP, and 32 strikeouts and just 3 (non-intentional) walks.

    Straight trade: a guy who hurts his team when he's not on the mound for a guy who hurts his team when he is on the mound... ... is the hill half-empty or half-full? (OB would call it the bump that would give up knocks and would use would even after a woodchuck would chuck would).

    Let's be reasonable (I used that word to ward off any posters who overreact to posters who overreact)... ... even if Breslow trades one of the Big Three to make sure he gets an actually legitimately goodly MLB relief pitcher, one guy isn't going to be able to rebuild a bullpen that is burnt to the ground in time. What we learned since the All-Star break is that the current Red Sox relievers just aren't good enough to stop contenders like the Dodgers and Yankees. Even if Breslow puts his job on the line and strips the farm of what it will cost to acquire as many as THREE bullpen arms, will that somehow resuscitate starters like Houck and Crawford, who have already approximated career-high innings pitched for an entire season? So who do we sell?

    IT'S STILL EARLY -- if you're waiting for the ponds to freeze... or to pick apples. But the baseball trade deadline is tomorrow -- and the bottom line is you're dead -- if you have no bullpen and don't make significant acquisitions to fortify it.

    I'm still laughing about the greatest home run hitter in history facing a reliever who only throws one type of pitch, and taking three straight strikes right down the middle.

    Tampa is selling, and Yandy Diaz might be a good fit to acquire as a right-handed hitting first base/DH middle-of-the-order guy. Diaz turns 33 soon, and is coming off the restricted list attending to a family matter. He's under contract through next year, with a team option for 2026. He may not cost that much in prospect capital, but did hit .330 last year to win the AL batting title... ... the Rays are always on the look-out for middle infield prospects they can move all around the field.

    Was the Cease trade worth it for San Diego? Three of the prospects he was swapped for are now in the White Sox' Top 10, and the fourth guy is an MLB reliever with a positive WAR on a negative club. To get an idea of comparative value, Mayer-Anthony-Teel all have overall prospect rankings of 55 or better. Only one from the Cease package is 55: Drew Thorpe.

    Is DFAed Ty France really just all done at age 30 or possibly a change-of-scenery guy? He was an All-Star just two years ago and has more homers this season than Smith and Cooper combined. If we don't have France, at least the Reds can say they always had (Kyren) Paris in the Spring.

    Not if they won't open that bag of chips... ... unless development people think his best position is already occupied by the face of the franchise they're committed to paying over $300 million.

    Who would've thought the Red Sox' best trade chips would be young outfielders -- after a half decade of early drafting and stockpiling middle infield prospects? Btw, as far as I can tell, the only best players available to be moved to the outfield in that time have been Yorke and Lugo. But now with Montgomery already rated as high as #63 in Baseball America's Top 100 list, there's no doubt Boston's young talent surplus is in the outfield. Getting serious about the Sox' best options to fortify the '24 roster in the next week: another starting pitcher is needed, but maybe not as much in the immediacy as a reliable reliever having a good year. I could be wrong, but a guy like Tanner Scott should also cost considerably less than starters like Crochet or Skubal...

    Just watched Cora confirm he's staying. I was wrong that the Sox would pay him, though it wasn't quite Counsell money. But signing Cora always made sense for owners cutting corners (the ones they hung around 20 years ago), because AC has shown he's as good as anyone getting the most out of a bare-bones roster. There should also be increased excitement about the trade deadline, assuming Cora was given some assurances that the front office would provide the reinforcements that are glaringly needed asap. Locking up a manager vocal about franchise support can also imply better offseasons ahead... Of course, the Sox also told Jansen they were going for it in '23 when they convinced him to sign.

    Call up the freshest arm from Triple A and get him to Coors (it's not like the Sox haven't done this before, when guys were down in the pen). Microsoft is mostly fixed, so transportation shouldn't be an issue; they don't need to use the Oregon Trail.
