  1. Story is what he is, at this point. Anything we get from him is a bonus going forward. I'm more worried about anyone who thinks the Red Sox can contend with Story in his 30s hitting 2nd, 3rd or 4th in the batting order.
  2. Freidman: Dodgers sign Snell. Dodgers sign Treinen. Dodgers sign Conforto. Dombrowski: Phillies sign Romano, first day of the Winter Meetings. Breslow: Red Sox are interested in being aggressive... fans deserve it... it's time... though some may still be celebrating Chapman (Yankee fans).
  3. Reading Sean Murphy may be available. Broke down last year, and owed a lot by the Braves... plus, as has been said here and elsewhere, be wary of anyone Atlanta deems expendable.
  4. Soto couldn't fly fighter jets in wars or fly cast to catch Atlantic salmon as good as Ted, either.
  5. We know the Red Sox have to improve defensively, and definitely in the infield. But what about the most important position on the diamond besides (but certainly connected to) the mound? Concerned about Boston's plans behind the plate? Brez' recently used the d-word for Kyle Teel -- "developing" -- and not the r-word: "ready." Danny Jansen just signed with Tampa, and not one player, coach, fan or Assistant VP shed a tear. Most metrics show that Connor Wong is a bad catcher. He's not even the kind of guy teams prefer for a back-up, like someone with good defensive skills who pitchers like to throw to (ex: Sandy Leon). And it's not like there are a lot of backstops on the market right now...
  6. Can't see Fried without Bregman -- recruiting a pitch-to-contact pitcher is a waste if not improving the infield D somewhere (please don't say the ivy-league execs in the front office actually anticipate a full, healthy year of Trevor Story to make up for the rest of a below-average infield). Now... can any Red Sox fan see Henry and Breslow spending approximately $400 million on two players like Fried and Bregman? We're not talking generational Soto or yenerational Yamamoto here... (bad pun, but a year ago Boston actually offered Yo Yama over 45 billion yen). Jurickson Profar, anyone? Switch hitter, Silver Slugger last year... most similar batters include 3) JBJ; 4) Kike; 5) Vince (not even Dom) DiMaggio...
  7. Streets around Wrigley are too narrow to hold Paredes.
  8. According to MLB Channel last night, Alex Bregman has the highest OPS at Fenway of any batter in baseball. For those who think he's just a pull hitter feasting off Houston's Crawford boxes, here are career splits: Home 94 homers, .270 BA, .846 OPS; Away 97 homers, .274 BA, .850 OPS. Bregman is not Trevor Story... definitely not with a career 13.4% K-rate. A few years back I attended an Astros-Red Sox game, and got there early so my son could try to catch HRs in the Monster seats in batting practice. Bregman was a huge disappointment, because in his round, he intentionally hit an entire bucket of balls to right field, line drives between first and second. I've never witnessed any other big leaguer practice such a specific skill in BP... but always wonder why not.
  9. This decade's World Series winners all won without Juan Soto in 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020... ... but two of them had Mookie Betts; three if you go back to 2018 (then it's Mookie 3, Juan 1).
  10. ... where he'll bat 8th, once they sign Soto and trade for Vlad
  11. Maybe you think clutch doesn't exist, or unclutch does exist. But I think we can do better than O'Neill. Compare with others that cause acid reflexibility: Career 2 outs, RISP (bb-ref): Ceddanne .235, Bobby Dee .219, Franchy .217, JBJ .212... T.O. .201.
  12. Pay him Soto money (there'll be a lot to spread around soon): money Soto will blow on a personal chef, personal trainer, body guards, personal uber, personal pilot and maintenance crew of his private jet, landscapers for his 7 mansion wonders all over the world, 10.0 Mantle rookie card, and mint original 1931 Dracula lobby poster.
  13. Bregman isn't just a consolation prize. His signing signifies a major shift in Boston, literally and Raffily: Gold Glove infielder, good righty stick that doesn't strike out -- all three are monumental changes for the Red Sox. It would also almost guarantee Casas being traded for a legitimate pitcher, another step to overall improvement. Four good reasons.
  14. They're packaged together in a blockbuster as soon as Soto signs here. So basically, all of these guys are safe this winter...
  15. Assuming Soto stays somewhere in NY, if the Red Sox don't get one of those three to top the rotation, the offseason will be a failure. Signing more #3 or #4 starters, and another infielder won't be enough to win the AL East -- which is the goal Team President Sam Kennedy clearly stated for 2025. I am intrigued by Vlad Jr. as the righty bat to protect Raffy, but he's a bad first baseman. Still young enough to improve -- but so is Casas, who won't cost prospects in trade, or a presumed Devers' contract to extend (like Vlad).
  16. Good points, and memories. Don't forget in '72 who became the true ace: Looie, who led the AL in ERA. But when it came to pitching, Steinbrenner was just lethal. In '74 NY's team ERA was third, so he signed Cy Young Catfish Hunter. Their team ERA was third again in '75, so he added four more starters to the rotation. In '76 the Yanks had the top ERA and won the pennant, but lost the World Series to Cincy. So George signed Reds' ace, Don Gullet. In '77 New York won it all, but got beat in a game by LA's Tommy John. So George signed him, too. The Yankees' ace reliever Sparky Lyle won the Cy that year, but then another All-Star, Goose Gossage, became a free agent that winter. So George signed him, too... because he could.
  17. Soto was the difference in the Bronx last year for a flawed team that made it to the World Series. The Yankees know they can go sign good free agent corner infielders and another outfielder and even more pitchers, but they won't be as good without Soto. As for pitching, that's one department New York never skimps on spending for -- and it's the main reason the Yanks are always contenders.
  18. I think the percent signs are the wrong symbols. It supposed to mean most 63-year olds that post on Red Sox forums favor Boston to sign Soto. The 9-year old for the Mets is the son of a NY coach. Toronto is just being babies about this.
  19. What actually happened in 2020 is that the LA Dodgers had to win more playoff games (13) than any other postseason team in history to earn their rings. How can it be any more legit.
  20. Mayer, Arias and Cespedes are three good shortstop prospects, though the latter may move to another position. Sure, we have a lot of middle infield depth that we can deal, but I have to keep one of the best -- either Mayer or Arias (just so we don't have to overpay again for the next Trevor Story). Maybe the front office has identified Mikey Romero as the core SS for the next decade? It's not like the Sox can count on Story as a rock of stability... he may be gritty, but like loose shale on a narrow mountain path.
  21. Buehler -- too many absences for full semester credits, but he did ace his finals.
