  1. My only comment on the Rfaela deal, especially in September is that he is slightly built (5'9"/165??) and has played a full season ( 150 games and still counting) . He has played 2 demanding positions well enough that management has not seen fit to sit him down. That's all to his credit . The swing/miss choices and OBP are poor. But consider, young Caribbean basin players, including DR are looking at a chance in a 1000 to get out of their countries and enjoy generational wealth for likely a large family . They were not going to get signed for walking or bunting. Swing the bat, something may happen. I think Cedanne, Abreu, Devers, and Guerrero for BJ's are examples of this. Rafaela's contract was a year premature and should have been dependent on his self improvement.
  2. As mentioned at the end of yesterday's game thread, odd time to run off a win streak with key players shelved. But when it still mattered they were not capable of supporting good pitching. I'll watch small parts of the final 5, but lost any serious interest in this group a couple weeks ago.
  3. Odd isn't it that when the chance at a playoff appearance ( singular) remained at hand, the team ( hitters) could do nothing to support effective pitching, but as soon as it is just beyond reach, and minus Devers, K.Jansen, Refsnyder, the team can run off a 3 game streak. Baseball is odd that way.
  4. It's easier with the relatively small sample size of a season mostly spent on IL, doing game interviews.
  5. The incredible climb back to the .500 level continues on the broad back of Casas, the stat builder when it doesn't matter. Let's check game 2 and see if the holy grail of .500 can be reattained. Since the Sox high water mark of 11 over was achieved, one could deduce a negative win rate of about 12 games in less than 1/2 a season.
  6. Best way to start a 10 game win streak is with a DH ! Oh wait.....
  7. Eating Grissom and obtaining $17 million would have been a better deal
  8. Too many candidates , especially with Raffy out and O'Neill not in the lineup. But my vote goes to the Ironman --Vaughn Grissom , a player whose mere presence is a rare achievement.
  9. Looks like it is farewell to Raffy Devers , finally capitulated to his injured shoulders . See you in ST Also farewell to Rob Refsnyder who contributed a season valued beyond his low cost. A professional ballplayer in all aspects . Will he come back for 1 more. let Rob and family think about it. If he doesn't that is one more RH bat that Brez neeeds to find. Hope Ref returns.
  10. A 1 hit shutout, no walks. WTF, these guys have a new trick up their sleeves every game. Lose a series where they scored 5 runs in 3 games. Checked out fully . Can't wait for the happy horsecrap in the Spring on how the kids are getting better and we got Sale back
  11. No Youk tonight. I think it is Middlebrooks
  12. If OB thinks the Sox bats look slow tonight, wait until he sees them tomorrow night after the players get to their homes about 4-5 AM after flying back from Tampa.
  13. We'll see what Cora does with certain players when they do get officially eliminated from the chase, maybe by Monday or Tuesday night
  14. No saying he eats too many eclairs and it slows his bat down
  15. Jansen's throws are becoming predictably weak and now has created an issue in the 7th.
  16. So Devers K's in 7 of his last 8 AB's , the 8th being a GIDP. NO MATTER what his issues are, he needs time off
  17. 5 Innings of 1 hit offense, that one by Sogard ? Bello pitching well enough around baserunners but no support. Credit to Littell for holding the Sox in check, but come on, man !
  18. Does everyone else see the flaw in Abreu's swing that puts him back in the dugout each time?. These are simple straight FB's , not 98mph benders. There is a lot of off season work for the young guys to do. Even Cora directly said that Rafaela's chasing was something they talk about and Cedanne is aware but just can't stop himself. These 2 guys ( Abreu/Rafaela) have huge potential but no self control .
  19. Thanks for the article. It shows a fair number of long term scouts/player development guys( Pre Bloom and some pre DD) getting the opportunity to pursue new hobbies. It would be interesting to get Bailey's and Breslow's honest take on what happened to the starters and BP arms after the A-S break this year. Also, how did the "team" come up with 2 RP pickups , both of whom wound up on the IL ? Inquiring minds want to know the CoBO's take on this.
  20. I bet their record in those 4 losing efforts was 12 and 16 . Had we had Kenley Jansen for all 4, the Red Sox would be bigger winners than they are now. Ted W. would have had a ring
  21. It would be a nice season end if Trevor Story can play out these next 10 on offense as he did last night. Power, speed, baseball smarts and score the run on Duran's sharp single through the right side. If Trevor can become that player with some consistency, next year will be looking better for sure.
  22. Something to consider as the Sox complete their 2024 season final 10 games. Some of us think the team is "tired" , worm down and not ready for a 9-1 run. Consider, Sox will play until about 9:30-10PM EDT, take about an hour to clean up, pack their bags and get on the bus. Plane back to Boston for the key last shot at Twins will depart about midnight, get to Logan around 3 AM. Deplane, get cars/taxis and maybe be at their homers 4-5 AM. Then be back at Fenway about 3-4PM to play what should be a meaningful game . And we think we are tired of watching them amid the recent struggles. Trust me they are very tired of playing out the string of games for no brass ring at the end. Worse they will only get one more paycheck in about 10 days, which money must last until late March 2025. Except for Devers who can live off his interest in the less expensive DR.
  23. That was an essential win because since A-S break , Sox have not won tight games, 2-1 is as good as it gets. Well, OK, may be 1-0 is the best . Jansen remains effective, but not efficient, so if you see him pitch, do not expect to see him tomorrow. That was a 25 pitch 9th featuring 2 baserunners, a double steal and a 3-2 finish with a swinging K. But the only thing thta counts is the W. Third place is secure no matter the Thursday outcome , as the final 10 begin
  24. Devers caps off his 3 K night with a GIDP . No end to this guys deadly ability. Yes, I know , his shoulder hurts
  25. Crfedit to Slaten for digging out of the 7th with no runs , and to Story for creating a run with 2 SBs, and Duran for driving him in. A late lead !!
