  1. Nothing as good as that home-grown, Red Sox Way developed pitching. Such a joke to follow all the off-season prognostications by professional and semi-pro pundits on the pitching rotation for Boston.
  2. i thought that was something from Shaughnessy ? Anyway, i do not hold Devers in the same high regard as many do. No question he can hit above average but overall he is no " face of a franchise".
  3. The most important 26 man roster is the one in effect on August 1 , after the early and mid season injuries, the trade deadline , and large sample sizes in the books. It is also when you can see if you are capable of or strongly in contention for post season . Those are the players you are counting on to bring it home. Quick aside, what will be 3Bman Raffy Devers reaction to being DH ? It might be more likely to have Bregman , than the sensitive man-child pouting
  4. The question was about Devers and where he should play. The answer is---in another city. IMO, his shoulder conditions will become chronic , due to his savage bat swing. He will not come close to living out his 10 year deal. So trade him now . Sox could get 2 position players for this chubby dude. Maybe a top catcher and a 2Bman Re: Casas . You can have no discussion with him about hitting or defense because you will not a word in edgewise.
  5. Amazing how showing up to ST and related soreness brings about a reordering of pitching staffs . If Devers' shoulder (s?) didn't recover well over the off season, why would they now. ? On the other hand it is EARLY and why push any buttons now . Let's recheck this list in late March and see who got well and who else went down.
  6. It occurs to me that Casas probably ought to be the DH on this team, with AB at 3rd and RD at 1B, if he can adapt to it. It may simply be time for the team to take the "hit" on Yoshida's contract, send him elsewhere . I am sure the Angels would take him if he was about free to them.
  7. O'Neill wasn't a warm, fuzzy guy or teammate . Probably Bregman isn't either. Will fans like him for the $40M or does he become a target when he hits .250/.799 ?
  8. My guess is that Masataka Yoshida will always be available in a trade situation , more so than Casas. Breslow's next hot stove season '25/'26 will be much more interesting depending on the 2025 season outcome, Bregman's option and the advancement of Anthony , Campbell, Rafael's hitting skills. We will also see what Devers continuing contribution at bat and in field is to this bunch , or will he show some chronic conditions that put him on the slippery slope towards his 30's. Casas needs to show his own durability and consistent growth or he will have reached his Peter Principle point.
  9. 3 thoughts: The opt outs after '25 and '26 create an interesting situation for Bregman while still younger than 33. If he has a great year, he can opt for another longer deal. If he doesn't hit a ton, he is still earning/accruing approx $40mm per year. And he can play that for 2 years. This move could be a short term bridge for the Sox The Red Sox young studs like Campbell get a year to work on their game at Worcester , and still be available for call ups.. I thought it was ambitious to assume Kristian could leap straight to MLB with virtually no time in AAA. Guys like Hamilton, Grisson, Romy G, and even Casas are now near superfluous , and can be traded . Could you get a good backup (or #1) catcher out of these guys ? Maybe a decent BP add ? ST injury bug has not had a chance to work it's magic yet ( except for LAA's Rendon) . Give it 40 days to do its thing and see who is standing in late March.
  10. With respect to the position players and upcoming prospects , the logjam may reach its peak no later than a year from now. Yoshida will clog the runway in 2025 in his 3rd year but he can actually contribute offense. Keeping some of the rookies, including Campbell and Anthony, maybe even Grissom at Woosox ( plus Mayer) might be the 'patient, roster building" Sox way for the early months of 2025 . By June 1, there will have been injuries ( say it ain't so, Trevor Story) and some under performance by some marginal guys who do break camp with the team. There is also still time for ST trade breakthrough including prospects or last minute signing of a RH bat, precluding prospects from the regular lineup.
  11. In agreement with Moon that there is numerical , if not talent depth , in the total pitching part of the roster, including some at Worcester who are not yet on the 40. One problem is that among the top 6 of the 12-15 Moon listed as fighting for the last 2-3 staff positions. I'll submit that observationally the following have low ceilings and are fillers at best: Bernadino; Weissert; I Campbell; Zach Kelly . Kelly and Weissert turn 30 before regular season starts and Bernardino is 33 and not a small sample size now. Of all the names listed by Moon, Fitts showed some spark in his limited 2024 opportunities for the Sox . He will be in his 25 year old season
  12. Certainly hope that Campbell turns out to be a youthful miracle solving the 2B dilemma , but expectations are sounding high on a player who has not yet cracked the 40 man roster . The one guy that you barely hear about any more is last year's great hope at 2B, Vaughn Grissom, who is on the roster . Vaughn underwhelmed with only 31 game appearances and .465 OPS . He does bat RH'ed, a rarity on the Sox. If Vaughn is another washout this year , the Sale for Grissom deal begins to smell even worse.
  13. If the pitching additions ( Crochet, Buehler, Chapman et alia) and injury recoveries ( Hendricks, Whitlock , Giolito, etc) come through with career average performances, combined with no loss of production from Bello, Houck, Crawford ( role TBD) , then this could be a high 80's win team competing to the end of September. OTOH, amongst the many pitchers ( 24) currently on the 40 man roster, how many of the top 13 expected on the 26 man active roster will make it out of June with no significant injury. For that matter, how many will be available to pitch at the conclusion of ST in late march. In fact if you consider Chapman and K. Jansen some what equal talents, the BP will be the weak spot on this team, potentially boosted by Whitlock and Crawford possibly.
  14. Just in case the Sox FO determines it needs another LH hitting OF'er with a bad attitude, keep A. Verdugo in mind. Suyrpise to Alex that no team has chosen to sign him. If he only hit RH ! On a more realistic note, Breslow might regret sitting so long on Grichuk .
  15. When is the last time Yoshida had to throw a ball ? I doubt Breslow is thinking of Masataka as a #7 pitcher. Yoshida should take as much time as needed to get his shoulder into hitting mode, and earn out at least 1 of his remaining years.
  16. Bregman can only make sense as one of a domino chain that includes Casas being traded and relocating Devers . It does not address Yoshida's contract for a DH , batting from the left side on a team heavy with LH'ers. You would like to think there is string of significant moves yet to make but the majority of major talents have already moved . With a month and a half to go to ST , Breslow still has significant work to do. Not the least is a productive catcher to backup Wong.
  17. So, it's October 15th ! Is Brez off his vacation yet ? What has he and his group done to improve this team ? Somewhat in jest , but watching some of the playoff teams so far and watching numerous recent former Red Sox playing I'm just wondering how we got to the place we are. Overloaded with LH bats and still thin pitching especially in the BP. It appears that more successful teams have strong BP's.
  18. Hah, a one game win streak entering the off season. Thanks to all for the insights, commentary and pure BS that comes through Game Threads. JH and Breslow better show up for work Monday and start fixing this roster.
  19. Gaspers last gasp appears to be a DP . He may not get up again
  20. i understand Cora playing Gasper as DH , trying to get him off his now 0-17 slump. Gasper is a terrible hitter though . People paid lots of money to see Yoshi or O'Neill so they were cheated.
  21. Ahhhh, the off season coming in a few hours, where we can solve all Red Sox issues and design as team that can finish the months of August/September . Can any of these late season flops be put on Cora ? Beginning to think so .
  22. I know this will irritate some on here, but not all. Dropping these 2 games at Fenway, scoring a total of 3 runs confirms to me that this is a clutchless, gutless bunch of pretenders with little to no pride in making a statement to themselves, forget the fans. Win tomorrow and finish right at .500, a whopping 3 game improvement over the prior 2 years. Lose tomorrow, and swept and caught by the Rays , finishing 1 game under .500. A 2 W improvement. Nice work boys in the FO, clubhouse , dugout and the playing field.
  23. Strictly an observation , but I think the Sox hitters across the board have a hard time with FB's in the 94-99+ range. They used to have FB hitters but no more, foul, foul, miss, grab some pine , son.
  24. I got home just in time to see useless O'Neil groundball a single through the left side but more importantly to see Mickey Gaspers TAKE strike 3 to continue his 0-16 in MLB , with 7 Ks. I know AC is giving the never to be seen again stud muffin a chance of a lifetime, and maybe we will see him tomorrow , but I hope not.
  25. sorry SS, have to go out now, so bring this 81st win home !! Fred Lynn won't be happy but those are the breaks, Fred
