  1. I still think Johnson can be a BOTRS or a swingman. If he is ready to succeed in that role he could be very valuable to this team this year.
  2. Do you mean Lakins? He has good stuff, and has a chance but I still think he projects better as a reliever.
  3. I would not be moved in opinion based on an 18 year olds first start. Groome will be fine, he has a long way to go to reaching the minors but I doubt someone with his talents comes close to flaming out in A ball
  4. Outside of Groome I don't think we have one starting pitcher in this system. Perhaps a swing guy, but I see all bullpen arms. Not the worse thing in the world. You can rebuild your farm system trading away top end relief pitching now-a-days
  5. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush. If they were still in the minors you'd probably have to send Betts and Benintendi to get Bumgarner. No harm in that trade to better your team and go on a playoff run but too much of that philosophy will have adverse results down the road.
  6. This, part of the benefits of having a strong farm is the ability to make blockbuster trades and to fill in holes. Those of us who are unhappy with the depletion of the farm system are more worried with the the amount of talent he's stripped from it. It was very extreme, it fits the seek satisfaction now model. We can still be Red Sox fans, cheer for this team, and speculate on the future.
  7. ^^^^ You know those guys are going to hit.
  8. This team is only getting started. We're still missing a few guys who could have a big impact on the pitching. Price, and Thornburg should make this team better, and I'm intrigued to see what Carson Smith will look like when he comes back. Also, the top of the order hasn't even started to hit yet. Pedey, Betts, Bogaerts and Benintendi are all struggling to some degree. (.603 .470 .697 .665)
  9. Are we winning? or is the other team sucking more?
  10. Me too, I hope to eat a big huge bowl of crow in a couple of months. He doesn't even have to do what he did last year offensively because his defense is really good. If he could be something inbetween offensively (of his up/low) then with his defense he's the starting catcher on most teams. I'm still not 100% sold on him, but yeah.....he made me look dumb last night.
  11. Kimbrel won't save more than 25 games We will win 75 games by 6+ runs
  12. If that is the "equation" I can testify that adrenaline can hinder performance just as much as increase it. It was those who knew how to control their emotions who performed. Hence my "maintain your composure" argument
  13. At this point Craigh or Castillo would have to absolutely demolish eastern league pitching to get called up or trading for. Pergaturoy indeed.
  14. If his defense improves this year at AAA he might be the starting catcher by June/July if Vasquez and or Leon can't hit a lick.
  15. I think Pablo might be Lackey 2.0 The first two years were a disaster but he might come back in the 3rd year and completely redeem himself. Also, if Devers pans out soon we might actually get back good value for Pablo in a trade this offseason. This could also clear out some space for extensions
  16. Thank god! I apologize, I missed some of the conversation in here and would have never thought we'd come to that consensus in here.
  17. I think you may be looking at it the wrong way. We're not trying to say there aren't clutch players but rather point out that what "clutch" actually is, can be very misleading to people. Maintaining your composure while others crumble is still something to be credited for. Some may say that the Falcons choked more than any team in a Super Bowl ever and I think there's truth to that statement. But the Patriots kept their cool, their focus, and maintained their composure. I have zero problem calling David Ortiz a clutch player I just don't think he is mentally or physiologically performing at a higher level there.
  18. I think the Sox go to Rutledge, or Holt in the near term but if they need a 3b for an extended period of time then I could see them going outside the organization and bring a guy in. They obviously wouldn't break the bank for some because Devers is getting closer but I have a hard time seeing any other option long term in 2017 if Pablo isn't the answer.
  19. Choking is a function of not maintaining ones composure. Clutch hitting is a function of maintaining your composure against those who can't.
  20. What if you're a "clutch hitter" but every pitcher you ever got a hit against in those "clutch" situations had a whip, bb/k, h/9, and ERA that was 4 times as worse in those "clutch" situations???
  21. I'd expect Benintendi to slide up into a top 1-3 spot once he is more proven. I have a high level of confidence in him but we've seen rookies start off slow and take time to adjust, even when they've had a SSS of success after their first call up. Pedroia, Bogaerts, Betts, JBJ! We've seen this time and time again. I'm not saying he isn't good enough to hit the ground running but let's not put that pressure on him on opening day.
  22. There are countless ways to adjust the order but I'd be pretty adamant about Pedroia and Betts going 1 and 2
  23. I wouldn't expect much of an uptick in Owens velocity, if any. Velocity usually tops out at a young age, before pitchers even ever put it together. I'd more optimistic of his future if he can harness his control.
  24. If Price is healthy I'm very optimistic about this rotation. Even if he's not 100% his former self I think he's capable, and SHOULD have an overall better season than last year. With the addition of Sale leading the top with a prime Porcello this rotation should be very good. Also, I'm curious to see what Wright and Pomeranz bring. Can Pom pitch a full season of baseball that mirrors his first half last year? maybe he can't, maybe he can. Maybe you write of his slip in performance as fatigue, and perhaps with a full season of starting under his belt he comes in with more endurance this year. Was Stephen Wrights year last year legit? will EROD emerge into what he's capable of? Best case scenario is this rotation is stacked, I don't want to imagine the worse worse case scenario, but even a more realistic worse case scenario is the rotation lacks depth but is top heavy. With a good lineup and a good bullpen I'd still like that teams odds in a playoff run.
  25. I just don't think that's realistic. You need real prospects to land high caliber players. We saw what it took to get Sale, we know they are going to ask for 2 of Benintendi, Devers, Groome and then a couple lower level pieces as well. There's no way we are flipping those guys for elite prospects. I could see us flipping them for the secondary pieces to get Quintana which effectively makes the deal along the lines of Erod/Devers/Groome.
