  1. Teams in our position make major upgrades all the time, it's actually the norm. How often do teams in 1st place grab a bat, a late inning reliever, a starter, and all of whom could be high priced rentals for a run ? There's 6 division leaders, plus everyone else who is in the hunt and they ain't just thinking about winning the division.
  2. I'd like to think of it more as treading water....as in eventually you're going to drown and die. Perhaps they can stay afloat long enough for someone like Devers to arise. I get that they are good on defense, but having a sub .600 OPS equates to being a black hole in the lineup and with the offense down at other positions that really makes them stick out at 3rd. We've seen how much scoring runs has hurt this team at times this year. If there is an upgrade to be made that could put this team over the top, it's at 3B.
  3. By 4th place I meant losing the ALCS. Sorry, I can see how that would be confusing. I'd prefer Devers get a shot too, but if he's not ready....that's a big hole.
  4. Good enough rarely gets you a WS, am I right or am I right? Fatal flaw? Idk, but let's not argue the semantics. A lot of teams about as good as us and arguably better will improve at the deadline. It would have been a shame to trade away the future to end up in 4th place
  5. It would be rather ironic if this team had no issues at gutting the farm system to build a league contender but was reluctant to trade pieces to put us over the top and fix some fatal flaws. It's like spending 250K on a Lamborghini but unwilling to spend a little extra on a 4th tire so you can actually drive it. Most who know me or remember knew how against I was depleting the farm but we've already thrown 95% of our eggs in one basket. We have a significantly better chance at winning the next three years than we do the following three years after that. You reap what you sow. I'm not advocating trading elite guys like Devers or Groome but if the right trade is there no one should be off the table.
  6. Because they view him as the 3B of the future they aren't going to screw with his progression. Which makes sense. Patience, his time will come soon. A promotion to Pawtucket is likely within the next two weeks.
  7. Oh I agree, but I'm not sure we can ever be certain what is made up and what is real rumors (or at least I always can't). How often to hear about our interest in some all star caliber player that was just never realistic (Like Felix Hernandez) and then it sounds like the same hype for over a year but we land Adrian Gonzalez in a trade? I think some of it comes down to the sources as well. Some guy writing on the bleacher report has more of an incentive to make stuff up where's someone working for Baseball America or ESPN could (or at least should) lose their job for spreading false rumors.
  8. Well often times the rumors are correct and the trades just don't materialize, or often times two separate rumors alone are correct but are tied together through a narrative. Team A might be looking for a 3B and team B might be looking to sell one and some sports writer ponders if there would be mutual interest. Being wrong, isn't analogous to being fake. Sorry, I just think this whole new "fake news" fad needs to die out.
  9. "Dombrowski said Rafael Devers is "real close" to being promoted to AAA. Says Devers will play 5 days at 3B, Chavis 2. Other days DH."
  10. But ugh yeah....offense is 10x the concern
  11. You're right, the bullpen has been deceptively good this year. Perhaps it's the fact that a shutdown bullpen stands out more in the postseason and despite the good number Joe Kelly doesn't exactly strike me as the guy to strike fear into lineups in the 8th. Perhaps continued success will win me over in July. But I don't really want to see anymore assets spent on improving the bullpen
  12. Off the MLB roster the guys with the most value would likely be Devers and Groome. Guys who aren't on that tier but who have probably seen their stock go up a ton this season are Michael Chavis and Bryan Mata. Aside from that I don't think the Sox have a ton of significant pieces, a lot of guys who profile as relievers still carry value but only so much.
  13. Might I add that it doesn't look good for Carson Smith either. He had a "setback" in his rehab and the organization has said that they "don't rule out a return this year" which to me is jargon for...."he's probably not coming back this year."
  14. Sox could use a high leverage reliever and we've all seen what the market for those are the last couple trade deadlines. Teams could ask for Rafael Devers for a closer caliber reliever and someone else will pay it if you don't. I think they need to start cycling through guys in Pawtucket and see what sticks. Chandler Shepard, Jalen Beeks, Kyle Martin, Brandon Workman and focus on a stop gap 3B. It is obvious they will not rush Devers.......but perhaps that might change come July 31st if he's still crushing it in the minors and the price for a 3B is too high. Personally I think the plan is to promote him after the AA all star break. So if he's mashing it in Pawtucket for a couple weeks I think the team might reconsider bringing him up in August.
  15. Chavis has trade bait written all over him
  16. They will promote Devers after the AA all star break.
  17. Eh, I disagree. You don't trade for Chris Sale no questions asked. A last place team with Chris Sale is still a last place team. I'm not knocking the trade as we were far from a last place team last year.
  18. If this team isn't good enough to win the WS this year then I'm even more PO'd that we depleted almost our entire farm system for 2-3 years.
  19. Shoulda woulda coulda. Hindsight is 20/20
  20. Thanks guys, I've been following the international thread on the Soxprospects site but haven't time to post a lot. Flores was described by one scout as "the best prospect I've ever seen". A lot of hype around this kid, and the Sox have a very good recent track record with their recent top international signings. It's worth following baseball americas Ben Badler on twitter the next week when it comes to these July 2nd signings. Baseball America is really completely unrivaled when it comes to international prospects.
  21. This is really a lack luster list. Chavis has definitely raised his stock some and Ockimey has shown a good approach at the plate but both these guys value will be tied into their bat as their defense is sub-par. This is more true for Ockimey who can only really play 1B. Most of these guys have more paths to never playing in the bigs than ever becoming everyday regulars. Beeks, Shawaryn, and Anderson have value as potential future relievers but this list shows the Sox lack of depth in the farm system. Mata might be a guy who commands some interest as he probably has the highest upside arm after Groome in the system. Bryan Mata/Chavis/Ockimey might get you a decent 3B....but it won't get you the Moose. Unfortunately, our system has been so depleted there is no way we would get an all star caliber player without giving up Devers/Groome. Maybe you part with one of those guys if you are trading for a guy who is about to hit FA.
  22. I think Chavis could handle 2nd as well.
  23. I agree that Chavis will likely move off position, but I also agree that he is trade bait. DD is trade happy, and with the system depleted and the only two blue-chippers left in areas of need it makes sense that a guy who significantly raises his stock like Chavis is something for him to dangle to another team.
  24. I agree with the overall point here. The guys who are supposed to hit have not hit. But a WS caliber deep lineup has guys up and down who can pick up the slack when others slump. You don't have to have a silver slugger at every position, but having a guy below the Mendoza line really sticks out. This team has appeared to have put all its eggs in the basket over the next three years, you'd think it would be imperative to find a viable solution at 3rd. I'm ok with the defensive stop gap who can play one side of the ball well. But we can't go into the playoffs with Marrero at 3B
  25. I'm not sure if Lin can hit worse than Marrero. At the very least he's Marrero at the plate with a little bit more speed. Still, the Sox need a more viable solution at 3B.
