    This is exactly why I get a kick out of posters who seem angry when a young pitcher is demoted instead of just booted from the organization. There's a reason why teams don't give up on talent so quickly.

    Well that was kind of my point with Lopez, often times elite relief pitching is garbage finds for years, and then all of a sudden they put it together for a few years. You can either pay a boatload for a guy who could revert back to a pumpkin in a year or two, or perhaps you can invest in your scouting department and see if you can be more efficient at finding these guys. Maybe it's the quality of your pitching coaches and you think you can take someone and tinker with them a bit and correct a flaw that you see holding them back from greatness. I'll admit, I didn't know who Lopez was before the middle of this year. Going back and looking at his stat line, and it's amazing how absolutely AWFUL he was for such a long time. He'd the prototypical guy who is 28, was a top 100 prospect in all of baseball who just can't put it together. He would have been the worse player on this team any other year of his career before this year and the most hated player on this board. Pre 2022 of course.

    You don't think Bello has the stuff to be a good pitcher? Is this because of his stuff? fastball/change up/ slider? Or because you're frustrated he's not Roger Clemens after his first 5 MLB starts as a 22 year old?

    That' a fair point, there are some in here who probably make me look like the biggest pollyanna on earth.

    I'm not sure the put Bleis above Bello, Bleis isn't even playing right now. I also don't think Rafaela is going to jump above Mata, they like Rafaela but they're a little bit more skeptical on them than the national ranking outlets are (who all have him higher). Mata's biggest knock from the early days was not having a plus pitch, he threw everything OK with a good feel for pitching. Now that his velicity has ticked up into the high 90's he has a much higher ceiling than Rafaela and he's at a higher level. I also don't see them dropping Yorke that much, I think they're confident his injuries were a big hamper on his production. I can see Anthony jumping up to 10, he's been a monster at the plate. Could skyrocket next year.

    Right, because he doesn't have the greatest stat line after starting 5 games in the major league level as a 22-year-old who was in A ball just last year he has no future. Great insight. I get it's a frustrating season, but just because a guy comes up and isn't an immediate all star doesn't mean he doesn't have a promising future. FWIW, Soxprospects has Bello as the #3 prospect. I think he finds his way into the rotation next year.

    I think a lot of people wanted to see another arm added to the bullpen, I think they thought Barnes would be better, he was an all star last year who looked like he had closers stuff but then he fell apart. Bullpen arms are volatile like that, sometimes in the opposite direction…..like Lopez, who was god awful before this year. If we traded for him at the beginning of the season Bloom would have been criticized, at least then. Maybe we need a better scouting department.

    No problem giving up a top ten prospect for an elite closer. But is this really the year to do that? Your team sucks. It’s like playing blackjack and doubling down on your 5 when the dealer is showing a 10. Nothing wrong with doubling down….but not there….not in that place. I’m not sure I’d you were one I’d the people upset we didn’t get a closer at the deadline or not, maybe I shouldn’t make assumptions

    Jorge Lopez was a very nice pick up for them. A prime example of what a great scouting department and a good pitching coach, and a patient fan base can do for a pitcher. In Lopez’s 7 years of pitching at the MLB level, he’d have been the worse pitcher at the MLB level every year but this year. If we traded for him at the beginning of the year he’d the ultimate dumpster dive move by a team. If we traded for him at the deadline we’d have given up top ten prospects, which may be forgivable in more competitive years. FWIW, the twins often use Duran as a multi inning role, not just one inning like he pitched last night, in that one game we watched.

    Deals like this are always that way, you either completely lose or you completely win. If Paxton even goes 100 innings next year but pitches as good as he has he will be appreciated in Boston. Kind of a different situation, but look at the way the Wacha signing worked out.

    I think the Paxton deal was mostly about next year from the beginning, with the hopes that he might have helped down the stretch. They knew they were getting very little from him this year best case scenario

    The way I look at it is, if you're going to go over the cap anyways, it's kind of a no-brainer. You just can't plan out next years rotation with him in the top 5. If he's healthy and gives you 100+ innings, that's a bonus.

    There's also a difference between bargain bin shopping to find a starting SS/SP vs. pitching depth. when you are hit with a plethora of injuries and those 3rd 4th option guys become your starter you can't really be mad that they're not stars.

    Its not just that. I'd be willing to bet if you can bad players who have hurt this team, with a few caveats they're guys who weren't signed to be starting pitchers, closers, set up guys, starting 1B/OF etc etc. How many teams have 3rd options at those positions that aren't "Trash"????

    Is that really the problem though? is it Bloom trash leading to the downfall of this team? do you have specific examples of "Bloom Trash"

    A grade two lat tear takes 6-12 weeks to recover from. He could have a completely normal offseason and a normal 2023 season, which for him might entail a new injury.

    IDK, pitching is tough to come by, and Paxton is well above average when healthy. If he had a setback with his elbow I'd be inclined to agree but he was hitting 95 off the mound and looks fully recovered from Tommy John. The setback seems to just be a lat strain. I'm not going to be surprised to see a club give him a cheap one-year deal. I also wouldn't be surprised if he got reinjured.

    Both grade out as a 50 but scouts indicates Bleis has a stronger arm, and more power potential.

    If the elbow is fine, all it takes is someone willing to pay 5 million or more for a one-year flyer. There's at least one GM that bites on that, maybe, maybe not. Maybe he wants to stay in Boston and feels he owes us a good season after effectively getting paid to rehab. Probably not, but it wouldn't be the worse thing for Boston if he does.
