I think it would be foolish for anyone to assume they didn't try to negotiate. There's so much that happens we never hear about. Does anyone actually think the Sox didn't talk to him and want to extend him if they could? What is the logic and the rationale behind the thought process? It makes zero sense.

There's been so much reporting and talks from industry insiders about Mookie going to FA, he was dead set on going to FA. I'm sure the Sox could have kept him if they dangled 400 million though.

Football is a horrible comparison, maybe we can use the NBA or even the NFL, but they only play 17 games a year roughly 10% what mlb plays.

While Betts technically did get traded, I think at the time it was a foregone conclusion he was not signing an extension here and was going to FA. Seeing how Boston figured they were not going to compete in 2020 they figured it was better to get something for him. It's a semantics battle, but it a sense he did jump.

I disagree, that's the fans perception and how we perceive the game. The reality is game 1 is just as important as game 162. And in that 162-game season, we won 92 and game 2 games short of a world series. No amount of cherry-picking can change that fact. Because that's exactly what happened.

So what? they were in a position to do that because of what they did the other 159 games during the year. It's a 162-game season. Can't cherry-pick the season. If they beat last-place Washington in June and then swept the Yankees at the very end of the season would that be the same thing? They still won 92 games. They then beat the Yankees and the 100-win Rays in a series.

They were linked to Quantrill during the 2016 draft. They were probably hoping he would have fallen to them at 12 when no one expected Groome would have.

Exactly, it’s amazing how someone can rewrite the 2021 campaign by saying they limped down the stretch. They eventually got Sale back and Schwarber got healthy and they went on a run all the way up to game 6 of the ALCS. You can overperform and be fluky, but that can’t be all luck during a 162 game season. That’s just silly.

Yes, that was due to a huge slump they had the last week of July and early august, after that they went on a run ending the season. Try again.

I think people take cliff literal to mean will suck, rather I view a team hitting the cliff but willing to spend over 200 having a seasons like 2021, not great but good enough to get lucky.

2nd 1/2 ops went from .761 to .798 they went 17-11 in September and pitched good. They had a funk late July early agust but besides that they were mint in the second half. But of course it was a fluke, all seasons are flukey to some extent, that works both ways too. Have to accept both

I know mlb deals include incentives but I’m not sure about how involved they would be. But Verlander would never go for it because someone is giving him a ton of guaranteed money

But in hindsight, if we won in 2021, it would have been with a payroll above the luxury tax line. You could say the same thing about the Sox.

If we should have learned one lesson from the last few years, and many won't, it's the margin between first and last is not as great as we think. Yes, 2021 we overperformed, but it's also true that 2022 was and underperformance. It can certainly be true that many teams overperform and end up winning the world series. You just have to be good and stay healthy to have a chance.

He strikes me as a platoon LF type of bat here. Not something I want to pursue with other holes in RF/SS/P/P/P/P/P/P/P

I always thought the Story signing was underrated, of course in hindsight it's easy to still underrate it because he's played one season here and he was riddled with injury. He was comparable to Bogaerts. Before 2022. XB: .290/.353/.459 .812 OPS TS: .272/.340/.523 .869 OPS Story was thought to have an edge on defense, I think OBP is a little underrated in OPS so I'd say up until that point they were of equal value. From 2016-2021 Bogaerts sported a 23.8 Bwar while Story bested him with 26.9 It would really stink if Story because a year-in and year-out 250-350 PA guy and can never stay healthy, but if last season was the exception and he recovers, he's a premium player. One of the biggest knocks on Story at the time of the signing was Coors field inflated his numbers, but him and Bogaerts had career OPS within .002 from each other playing AWAY.

Not necessarily, they were two games away from a WS In 2021 and 2023 was always an option to reset. They look bad not trading JDM and resetting at the deadline. But that’s easy for me to say in hindsight

I think it was planned. I feel they saw the shift changes coming and realized plus defense was about to become A LOT more valuable at 2nd and they struck preemptively.

I absolutely would. Probably is it's going to take more than Mayer. Marlins will also want Bello and Bleis.

The absence makes sense. He saw himself backed into a corner, so he figured he would buy his time until he could strike again. Like right now, I could see him replying to our last two exchanges because they're no longer centered on baseball but rather the dialogue. That's his arena. He will attack this conversation, or something similar to this. But you will never see him come in here and say what he would have done with the 2023 outfield without Kike, or even with him. Not even for $100 going towards Children's Cancer Research. Kind of selfish when you think about it.

Verlander is seeking 120/3 and I think he gets it. Easily looks worth it after this year, but such risk with his age. He could literally hit the wall next year. Too many eggs in one basket for me. Eovaldi might sign for close to 40/4

What a bunch of bull he couldn't even come up with a name. Just name anyone?!?!?!? even if it is wrong or gets picked apart (not like he ain't used to that) he could have had a $100 dollars donated to charity.
