That's top of the top prospects. Reaching the majors at 21 is no easy feat, and there are plenty of all stars who didn't reach the majors until after then. Devers and Bogery were also international guys who started their pro careers at 16.

And what is the right deal? if he preferred to not play in Boston the right deal could have been 450. Maybe it was 400, which were his demands. I mean if someone says "sure I'll stay here for the right deal give me a billion dollars" I mean come on. 300 million was a very reasonable offer by the Sox which at the very least negates the false narrative they didn't try to sign him to an extension.

Come one man, that's still a mountain more of evidence than your theory. We see what we want to see, Sox made three contract offers to Betts, and he gave every indication he wanted to go to FA. Again, and again, I think this is the case of us fans seeing what we want to see and putting our fingers over our ears and going "la la la la la la la la" Betts was gone, Betts was never going to sign an extension here, maybe the Sox could have signed him in FA but they would have had to top 12/365 at the very least because we know LA would have offered that.

Again, that's just conjecture, as is my stance.....but at least there is some supporting evidence in the rumor mill that Mookie did not want to stay here. I know it's a tough pill for Sox fans to swallow but the reality is I think Betts just did not want to stay here. To add and answer your question, the biggest piece of evidence we have that Mookie didn't want to resign here is the fact that he was traded. I know people love to hate Boston and criticize the moves, but do people really believe the Sox wouldn't have tried harder to keep him here, or not have traded him before FA if he really wanted to stay? Devers is still here, they may not want to resign Devers but if he had no intention of staying here there would be trade rumors galore right now.

There were other reports and others speculating. I have a high level of confidence Mookie didn't want to sign here, as Red Sox fans that's a very harsh reality to face and I can understand why many of us refuse to accept that. But conversely, why would Mookie suggest post script he didn't want to sign here? He's not a bad guy, why would he trash talk Boston like that, I'm not surprised he hasn't suggested such.

Also, if you trust Felger& Mazz, they reported that they heard the Sox ultimately caved in and gave Betts what he wanted but he said no. I have heard from other places that Betts ultimately wanted to go to FA. There's a lot of evidence Betts didn't want to resign here....something some Sox fans may never accept and/or get over.

I think there's enough evidence to speculate there are a lot of people here back then who probably liked him. It doesn't take much to at least want to check in with a guy, doesn't mean they're going to trade for him.

Not under Bloom, love him or hate him, but he leaks almost nothing. But I vaguely remember it reported that the Sox were rumored to have offered him up to $300 million>?!> no?

I think Betts "buy now" price was higher before he went to LA. When covid struck and we didn't even know if there was going to be a season so much uncertainty in the world lowered that price.

I didn't feel like digging that deep, but most of the scouts I started looking at are still in the organization now. Ray Fagnot who signed Groome is now the regional scouting supervisor, willie Romy is still a scout, Vaughn Williams who signed Dalbec is still a scout. And Michael Rikard who was the VP of amateur scouting in 2016 is now the Director of scouting.

Exactly, now if Covid happened two years earlier, maybe Mookie takes the 300 million. Different universe.

I think it would be foolish for anyone to assume they didn't try to negotiate. There's so much that happens we never hear about. Does anyone actually think the Sox didn't talk to him and want to extend him if they could? What is the logic and the rationale behind the thought process? It makes zero sense.

There's been so much reporting and talks from industry insiders about Mookie going to FA, he was dead set on going to FA. I'm sure the Sox could have kept him if they dangled 400 million though.

Football is a horrible comparison, maybe we can use the NBA or even the NFL, but they only play 17 games a year roughly 10% what mlb plays.

While Betts technically did get traded, I think at the time it was a foregone conclusion he was not signing an extension here and was going to FA. Seeing how Boston figured they were not going to compete in 2020 they figured it was better to get something for him. It's a semantics battle, but it a sense he did jump.

I disagree, that's the fans perception and how we perceive the game. The reality is game 1 is just as important as game 162. And in that 162-game season, we won 92 and game 2 games short of a world series. No amount of cherry-picking can change that fact. Because that's exactly what happened.

So what? they were in a position to do that because of what they did the other 159 games during the year. It's a 162-game season. Can't cherry-pick the season. If they beat last-place Washington in June and then swept the Yankees at the very end of the season would that be the same thing? They still won 92 games. They then beat the Yankees and the 100-win Rays in a series.

They were linked to Quantrill during the 2016 draft. They were probably hoping he would have fallen to them at 12 when no one expected Groome would have.

Exactly, it’s amazing how someone can rewrite the 2021 campaign by saying they limped down the stretch. They eventually got Sale back and Schwarber got healthy and they went on a run all the way up to game 6 of the ALCS. You can overperform and be fluky, but that can’t be all luck during a 162 game season. That’s just silly.

Yes, that was due to a huge slump they had the last week of July and early august, after that they went on a run ending the season. Try again.

I think people take cliff literal to mean will suck, rather I view a team hitting the cliff but willing to spend over 200 having a seasons like 2021, not great but good enough to get lucky.
