I was going with @redsoxpayroll on twitter who updated their number yesterday. You have to factor in promotions increasing that number too, Sox don't have much left to spend at all.

Sox have about 11 million left to spend before hitting the luxury tax. Now with the incentives in Duvalls deal that could potentially be 8 million (less with other incentives? not sure if they are included in the projected payroll of $221.88 MM). I'm not sure they can sign a guy like Andrus or Iggy unless they're getting them on a 5 million dollar AAV. Maybe that happens, maybe a trade is still in the works.

I don't see Hamilton ever starting either, which is why I see another move coming. Arroyo/Valdez should be your guys to step up if Kike/Signing goes down.

I think Verdugo is a candidate to have a much better season in 2023, which Boston pretty much needs to have a successful season (on top of many other things breaking right). I wonder if Duvall can bounce back too, a wrist injury zapped his offensive production and in the past, it has felt like it takes a guy a full season to really get his offense back after that. I'm pretty sure Duvall is banking on that too, I would have loved to see a second-year team option on that contract, but it's fine for 1 year and 1 WAR. Good deal on it's own, but one that was necessary because of a botched offseason.

I'm wondering if they can still sign someone like Andrus now, and play Kike at 2nd. A trade could still be in the works too. I just have a really hard time seeing Arroyo/Valdez at 2nd. Arroyo could be good there but for how long? You could easily see David Hamilton SS (if there's no other moves to this roster) starting games in 2023....I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Sox are about to sign free agent Adam Duvall. They view him as an outfielder. Very meh, but what would one expect at this point. I wouldn't be surprised if he lays an egg or has a nice bounce back .800+ ops season.

This is not a new move, 20 years ago these were the types of moves made all the time but no one ever talked about them or cared. No, it's annoying to hear about because every small transaction gets weighed against the big moves they did or did not do as if this stops them from making more high-end moves. It doesn't, they just suck at signing good free agents top dollar.

I'm not sure how much of a catcher Ronaldo Hernandez is anymore, and Caleb Hamilton isn't anything too exciting either. If they think they have a better upgrade for a depth option and they don't have to really pay him anything, that's fine. Like I said, the Milb teams need to be field too.

They needed a catcher in AAA, they still have to field the Minor league teams.

A lot of these kids agree to terms with teams when they're 13-14 before they officially sign and are taking off of showcases. The scouting is messy, it's not the like the MLB draft. The fluidity between the #1 ranked guy and the #30th ranked guy in the IFA class is ten times messier than in the mlb player draft.

I feel the further away a prospect is the wider range of possible outcomes. You will the guy who signed for 7K become a star and the 1.5 million dollar bonus baby never play in the majors. But some figures worth noting. Bogaerts 410K (we gave Jose Vinicio $1.95 million that year) Devers $1.5 million Miguel Bleis $1.5 Million (soxprospects #3) Luis Perales $7.5K (sox prospects #10) Bryan Bello $28K (ranked as high as #24 on BAs top 100 mid 2022 before graduating) Caddanee Rafaella $10K There's been some duds, and then of couse the sad story of Daniel Flores who got $3.1 million in 2018 and was considered one of the best all around talent that year. Kid got cancer and passed away. Then there's prospects like Christopher Acosta who got $1.5 million from the Sox until he was suspended by the team and never played again for 4 years. The details have never been known, and it's a big mystery. But it most of been something really bad for the team to place a guy on their suspended list 4 straight seasons.

Story is going to have to perform at the back end of his contract now do be worth the money, because he aint' opting out. The good news is, a healthy Story is a really good ball player. The bad news is, what if he can never get back to that level of play? He is only going to be in his age-30 seasons so there's a decent chance he still comes back strong. Lets just hope this is one of those situations where it's not a snowball effect of injury after injury. A lot of guys get injured and have a lost year or two and then come back fine, while others are seemingly never the same or struggle longer. I don't know if I'd want to bet on him, but seeing how we are stuck with his contract I'm certainly rooting for him. I feel a heck of a lot better if he has a productive 2nd half to 2023.

If he was healthy in todays market he'd get a lot more than that. Todays Story in Todays market would not get very much at all. He might get a high AAV with way less years and an opt out. Or just short term deal. Well actually, he wouldn't even get any of that because he can't play for at least 1/2 the season. He might get a contract structured like Paxton but with a lot more money potentially.

At the time of the signing Story actually had an OPS .002 higher than Bogey AWAY from Coors, or maybe it was .002 lower but I think it was higher. Point is, effectively the same.

You got to love the off-season threads that just turn into a carrousel of repeating arguments. There are no winners, only daily, come back tomorrow and play again. Maybe we just need pitchers and catchers to report so we can talk about something else. But this story situation is just stupid stupid stupid.

Soxprospects identified him as a guy who could be DFA'd next. who knows, maybe he clears.

If Andrus is holding out for three years he could be getting two year deals with slightly higher AAV but not enough to entice him to a 2 year deal. Maybe we can sign him to a 2 year deal with a team option third year, but put a $6 million buyout in it. That way we can pay him a little bit more money for effectively two years but keep the AAV down a bit.

Bloom wouldn't know what to do with a medical any more than me or you would, he's reading or listening to a doctors interpretation and recommendations of such report. Of all the reasons to hate Bloom, the only way this would ever make sense is if it came to light that Bloom forced or coerced Story to make a medical decision AGAINST the advice of a medical professional here. This does not appear to be the case by any means.
