Which is fine, be we have plenty of those guys on the roster already, if all you have are 4 and 5's then eventually your #2 and #3 starting pitcher is a back-of-the-rotation/swingman. I think if they both have a future in Boston at least one of them is going to have to move to the pen fulltime. Otherwise maybe one needs to be traded. Not now, we need all the pitching depth we can get, but neither of those guys will strike fear into the hearts of our opponents, and both haven't looked great at the MLB level yet.

Crawford, or Winc? I don't think either of these guys is a starting 5 pitcher in a playoff-caliber rotation.

This is also the same Winc who struck out 44 guys in 70.1 innings and put up a 5.89 ERA last year. I mean, you could argue Crawford wasn't much better, but did show the ability to miss bats more than Winc. I also think Josh can be good in the bullpen, when he dials it back he actually misses a few bats. He will never do that as a starter.

somewhere between 10-15 after being dead last just a few years ago is not only an amazing improvement, it's probably a level of organizational growth our rivals aren't seeing. Things can always go one way or another, but if this trajectory continues the Sox should have a top 10 system by consensus by years end. Law might have them 15th. haha

Which is fine, who are any of us to critique? how many people REALLY know the strength of all the minor league systems? What doesn't make sense is the Sox system seemingly got better, and even according to LAWS rankings they had more guys in the top 100 and move further up the 100.....but even in his own rankings they slipped from last year. Law always seems to be an outlier in some way.

If by some Miracle a guy like Mondosei stayed healthy and Story came back, you could have a plus infield defense and Kike might tip the defense in the outfield to plus. Thats a LOT of things that have to go and stay right for that to happen. Rafaella may play into the mix by August too.

Let's not leave out Baseball America at #10. that might be too high because they count Yoshida, 24 is just absurd Law is on some crack. Realistically they're probably in the middle. 14 feels about right.

You also can't just go by stats alone. Lets say player A hits a home run in a game. Who did he hit it against? An Ace? or a Low A nobody? And even if it was another team's ace, was that guy throwing the same he would be in a regular season game with the same kind of pitch he would pitch in that count or was he just trying to spin a breaking ball over the plate regardless of the outcome? Because he wants to ramp his arm up. It's not that the stats are meaningless, it's just that its really hard to assign any meaning to them because the game is played differently in spring training. The point ISN'T to win, the point is to get ready to play.

In the spirit of brevity, I figured saying not retaining Bogaerts captured that. Bogaerts was a shortstop. So, they didn't sign a shortstop.

Here's some food for thought though, where would the Sox be ranked if Bello (a pitcher) was still eligible? If he pitched 10 fewer innings last year he'd probably be bumping them up in the 10-13 range like BA has them.

Spring training results are a conundrum to digest. They are said to be meaningless, yet players are evaluated to make a team. They're also all we have to go on at this point. Pitchers aren't used the same as they would be in a regular season. you LHRP might get lit up against right-handed hitters but you don't care because he got his inning in. Fringe guys are playing their butts off, and regulars who don't need to earn a job are just going through the motions and ramping their bodies up. It's not that they're completely meaningless, but they have to be taken with an enormous grain of salt, a whole boulder of salt. They mean something, we say spring training results don't mean anything when they do mean something, and I fall into this hypocrisy as well. They're certainly nothing to get worked up over.

I think he thought Verdugo could bounce back defensively and Kike in the OF would tip it plus. Story getting injured and Bogaerts leaving forced Kike to SS.

Someone totally sold me on the idea of batting Casas lead off, it's pretty unconventional, and I see him long-term as more of a 2-4 hitter potentially, but I kind of like it for next year. There's no real prototypical lead-off hitter on this team. He's going to be a high OBP guy and will get on base which to me is much more important than speed at the top of the order even with the new rules. He's going to get a ton more PA's, which will help him continue his development at the MLB level quicker, AND if he hits it's going to pad his stats a little bit and that might help him in ROY voting, which could net the Sox a pick. Assuming they don't want to lead off with Yoshida, which they have said they are not going to. At least vs. RHP I think they should consider it.

It’s looking like Whitlock and Bello won’t be out for too long, they just want the rest of the teams to get a head start by a couple weeks because they plan on being awesome this year

Ort was a nice arm. We’ve seen how volatile arms can be. We also look at bettter bullpens and think “why can’t we get guys like that” With the exception of the very elite, most bullpen arms are made. A guy sucks for one team and someone else is able to turn him into a good pitcher. Ort was a good gamble, perfectly justifiable. But, not all projects works out, and it still may for him elsewhere, but it’s not looking good. You have to cut your losses at times, I think it’s obvious he’s the next one to go. Cant spell Abort without Ort.

You’re probably right, but you got to make an opening offer that you can come down from and still get good value. IdK maybe that’s so high they walk away, but I think of a GM was reasonably interested in a player they’d make a counter offer. Honestly, it doesn’t really make sense. The Sox are not trading Jansen. It makes more sense for the Mets to go with another option and maybe trade for a mid inning guy to solidify their bullpen. Maybe, idk. But perhaps someone like Schreiber would interest them more for a much lower return. Probably not getting a top 10 guy for him right now. And I’m not sure I want to trade our bullpen depth for a b level prospect right now. That can wait until the deadline if this team sux.

Toolsy, had a good arm. This is how bullpens go. You find guys who you think you can fix something and develop. Sometimes it works other times it does not. But yes, Ort sucks, and I suspect at this point he’s the next guy to go.

They spent the money because they had it, they had when there was a free agent market that has since dried up. I don’t want to trade Jansen, nor do I find it likely, but if the Mets want to be dumb I’d listen. I think this bullpen should still be much better this year even without him.

I would try to get a pitcher back too on top of Parada, like Joel Diaz, maybe throw in a 40 man guy like Duran or Dalbec to have multiple players flowing both ways and make room in the 40. I don’t seriously want this, but If I had more faith in this pitching staff staying healthy I’d love to move one of Houck/Whitlock to the bullpen and call up Mata. Closer by committee to begin until the best of that Schreiber/Martin/Houck/Mata/Whitlock takes the role.

Definitely not for the entire year, but at least for the first 1-2 months, I think theres a few permutations of this roster that have both Refsnyder and Tapia on it. Actually, I think there's a pretty decent chance.
