WHy wouldn't they have been caught off guard? are you suggesting the Philly had the inside scoop to the United States military and new he was going to be allowed to play baseball this year?

The development for the catcher is slower (especially on offense) than any other position in baseball. At this point in their careers, Reese actually has a higher offense output than Christain Vazuez has had with what is now better defense. It's not my first bet, or a sure thing by any chance, but he could end up surprising a lot of people this year.

That's the problem with Ort, poor command. If he had good command his fastball would play up well. High 90's with good movement. Of course, as Red said that doesn't make you good, if you don't know where it's going.

No it doesn't. But you can't teach a guy to throw 99, 100 MPH. You can teach him to command it better. That can be the difference between a 5.00 ERA and being a shut down closer. This is why teams take flyers on arms in the bullpen every year. Every team does it. Some times a guy develops and sometimes they don't. That's baseball.....it's a hard sporrt.

an X factor here might also be Reese McGuire. He could have a break out year this year. Or not. Either way his defense will be an upgrade.

The lineup has talent this year too. Not 2020 levels but if Duvall is healthy, Casas and Yoshida are the real deal (looks good so far) and Turner doesn't fall off a cliff this lineup is going to be pretty good. Id' throw Mondesi in there but he has almost no history of staying healthy.

That's fair, and he very well may end up turning into something, or not. But you can only carry guys like him for so long.

*sigh* why do I even try. The thing I hate about this conversation is it forces me to be negative about Song, I hope the kid becomes an MLB starting pitcher. But this notion that he should have been protected when his picking was pretty unprecedented is just absurd. Also, linking him with Ort is just stupid....If there is an argument to be made here it is keeping Ort over WARD. At this point, a guy like WARD has a higher chance of having a good productive MLB career. He was literally the VERY FIRST guy picked in the MLB rule 5 draft. Losing WARD, and protecting Ort/Braiser seems really dumb at this point. I don't think you could ever say that about Song, even if he becomes good. It's just a weird, unprecedented, unlikely situation. If I had a genie lamp, I'd literally use one of my three wishes to end this conversation forever.

By that logic Ort is a good prospect, he hits 100. He could be one tweak away from being the next Andrew Miller.

Yeah, which is why you wouldn't rush him back like that, but they were forced to because he had to pitch on the 26 man this year. It's pretty hard to prove an injury depending on what we are talking about. But there are MRI's, X-rays, Cat Scans, etc etc etc. I'm not sure what happens with HIPPA when a grievance is filed, but I don't think it's that hard to prove if Philly is exaggerating the injury. Which, is probably not happening. I don't think it's sinister on Phillys part, just stupid.

I just thought the same exact thing. You literally only have to go back 3 years to find a worse team. I can see Tomases point of view if you. Don't beleive in Casas Don't believe in Bello Dont' believe in Yoshida Believe the Red Sox will have an insane amount of injuries again. Yes, injuries will happen, but the Sox had an absurd amount of guys on the DL last year. If you believe all that, and there's nothing wrong with it, you're definitely a cup-half-empty kind of guy assuming the worst-case scenario. I certainly think it's possible this team sucks, but I think they have the capacity to be really good and that's my problem with Tomases writing. From a pure talent point of view, it's just insanely wrong.

But how? how can he become a starter? he pitched 17 innings in 2019. It's going to take years to build his arm strength up to handle a starter's load. His being allowed to pitch this year caused Philly to rush him because he had to play in the majors this year and it led to injury practically on day 1. His path to the majors is likely in a bullpen now. Maybe he will be a late-in-life starter like Rich Hill. His Injury actually helps Philly keep him, which is dumb, it almost incentives throwing a guy out there in a capacity to injure himself if it's even a real injury. The Sox should file a grievance here.

no no no, you can't compare him to Ort. There has literally never been a situation like Song before the odds of him having a mlb career were astronomically low. They still might be. I wish I could say something like "people like him never get protected" but I can't because the truth is there has never been a situation just like this before. Peter Abraham backtracked a lot of his comments too by the way for what it's worth, his opinion isn't worth much in my book. I would critique your statement. "leaving WARD unprotected in favor of ORT" was a major blunder. The kid has still yet to pitch more than 20 innings in pro ball, above A ball. We are getting hung up over scouting reports that are 4 years old. The odds of him being the same game are slim.

There’s a big difference between a guy who never stepped away from the game rehabbing and injury and someone who hasn’t pitched in 4 years. Wait! Can’t piss of Red, and forget about his 17 innings in 2019z If anything, his injury is proof of this, or at least may be. Phillie rushed him, he’s missed several years of not just developing his pitches but ramping his innings up. Whitlock had 205 innings to Songs 17 19 or whatever it is? Plus he never stepped away from pitching coaches and MLB trainers. They’re not the same.

I think it's just being delayed at this point. If you're not ready to add someone to the 40-man who doesn't need to be added yet then why DFA him when you can wait? Ort's 9 lives are close to being up. It feels like he's the 40th man on the 40 man roster right now.

I don't think we ever see this exact roster. I think they find a way to keep Bello on this roster with full health in the pitching staff. Maybe he finds his way down to the minors for a couple of weeks but if he's still there by the time Mondesi is back something horribly went wrong.
