  1. Of course you would want both. In recent years , the role of starters has diminished a bit. The bullpen is more important than ever. Nearly every close game becomes a battle of the bullpens. The Sox have failed to keep pace in this area. And it shows. Eck knows what he is talking about.
  2. Eck would know a thing or two about it. He was one of the best.
  3. And the Orioles traded Lopez because they had the Giant ready to take the closer's role. Other teams are way ahead of the Sox in bullpen construction. The Sox approach to the bullpen has not worked. And that has cost them plenty. It is ,and has been , the single biggest weakness. Will next year be different? I don't know.
  4. I meant in the outfield, not first base.
  5. Sad stat : Since July 1 the Sox pitching staff has given up twice as many runs as the Dodgers.
  6. Nothing to lose by giving Cordero a long look. There is no future in guys like Pham and Refsnyder.
  7. I agree that the closer is just part of the bullpen. But the closer is the leader, the linchpin of the pen. People get too hung up on the save stat. To me a save means that you won the game. And winning the game is the objective.
  8. I am not sold on Schreiber just yet. His sidearm slider looks tough on right handers . We will see if he is for real. And I am not sold on Houck as a closer either. The bullpen needs an overhaul.
  9. Devers always seemed like a happy kid. Lately he looks troubled. Maybe he has pain from the injury. Maybe he is unhappy with how things are going. I don't know.
  10. The bullpen needs a complete overhaul for next season. I would make Whitlock a starter. Keep Houck and Schreiber in the pen , but acquire a good closer ( you mentioned Treinen , who would be good ) . Then fill it out with hard throwing , but maybe not well known relievers. No more retreads.
  11. They are not making any progress. Only 34 games left. About the only chance is a good winning streak and hope a couple of the other contenders stumble. There is no indication that they are capable of that winning streak. The only hope is that thing about anything being possible.
  12. Dgalehouse: This bullpen is a hot mess. Moonslav: (to galehouse ) The pen might be fine. And the sun may rise in the west next season. Dgalehouse: (to Moon) The pen sucks and as long as I have lived, the sun has risen in the east. Bellhorn: (to Galehouse ) Why are you always attacking Moon? MaxB: I freakin' agree with freakin' Moonslav. Notin: The sun doesn't actually rise. The earth spins on it's axis while orbiting the sun. OldRed: According to my eye test it looks like it rises in the east. Most of Sox Nation agrees. Harmony: According to Marcel , the Mariners will win the pennant before the sun rises in the west. A700: The pen is a pigsty.
  13. You are being ridiculous. Much of what is posted here is aimed at other posters. Some of it is very smarmy , sarcastic or just nasty. Some of the time it is aimed at me. But you always blame me. It is not right and I am tired of it. Some others have gone off base and have vilified you in a derogatory manner for your bias. I would never do that. But I am fed up with the whole double standard thing. How about you don't respond to me and I won't respond to you. Deal?
  14. Just using the term "relief ace" is slanting things. Sounds kind of attractive.
  15. Where in the world am I " crapping " on people. You can't be serious. So many things are posted here without any complaint from you. But you are calling my post " crapping on people?" You are very selective in your criticism. Try harder.
  16. In the words of the inimitable John Sterling, "That's baseball, Suzyn."
  17. Good points. Saying the plan going into the season was Robles and Barnes as closers is/was asinine. The " relief ace " idea is not going to happen, except in the minds of the same few posters. If you think Whitlock is your best arm, you don't use him as a glorified set up man. That is preposterous.
  18. Balderdash. The " relief ace " is just another term for the "leverage" guy. Formerly known as set-up man. I didn't miss it. Francona was/is a player's manager. Allen was his closer. He wasn't going to demote him and give the job to Miller when Miller was acquired. This poll is slanted. We all know who thinks the " relief ace" is the best choice. That doesn't change the fact that it is a bad idea and will not gain wide acceptance in MLB. Whitlock, assuming he continues to pitch well, will either be a starter or closer.
  19. Apparently we have invented a new one . The " relief ace " . And it is leading this poll. Apparently the " relief ace " is deemed to be more important than the closer or starting pitcher. Only on TalkSox .
  20. I think the Sox have been trying to limit his innings. But I think they see his future as a starting pitcher. I'm okay with that as long as they go out and seriously improve the bullpen this winter.
  21. With Chapman , you may not have seen it all yet. He seems to have been persona non grata lately anyway.
  22. Harm , There used to be the Mr. Rogers baseball forum , but it may not exist any more. So don't ask for a link. By the way , don't ever ask me for a link . I don't do that.
  23. Story back in the lineup today. Duran optioned.
  24. In any large group , smaller sub groups will develop. Usually among like minded folks who tend to agree on most things. Sometimes they will feud with other sub groups who have a different viewpoint. TalkSox is no different in that regard. The problem is that people take things far too seriously. Then things can get nasty and personal. Everyone really needs to lighten up. This is not all that important.
