  1. The Sox are 26th out of 30 teams in bullpen ERA. If you look at the list, you will see that the teams with the highest bullpen ERAs are the teams at the bottom of the standings. The teams with the lowest bullpen ERAs are, for the most part, the playoff teams. With very few exceptions, there is a strong correlation between bullpen ERA and the success of the team. Building a better bullpen should be the number one priority this off season.
  2. I'm waiting for someone to come along and explain how the bullpen actually pitched pretty well in this one. It wasn't at all their fault.
  3. The Sox can mend some fences by re-signing Bogaerts and Devers. Then make a serious attempt to keep Wacha. Add a slugging outfield/DH type. Other than that , I T B S. It's the bullpen, stupid.
  4. About time. It was stupid to begin with.
  5. If the Sox have any hope of escaping the basement, they need to sweep this series with the Orioles. Even then, it would be tough. Looks like a last place finish. Sad.
  6. Game is called. Official game. Final score 2-0.
  7. Right. The kid wanted to give Maris the ball. Maris told him to keep it. You don't see that too often.
  8. You could get a nice car for $5,000.00 back then. Very nice gesture by Maris.
  9. By rule, the umps have to wait a minimum of 75 minutes before calling a game. That would be about 10:30 tonight.
  10. Bello has the stuff to be a good one. He does look like he could use a little more maturity. It looked like he was showing up Refsnyder after that error. It was a costly error, but those things happen.
  11. It is up to the owner to spend what it takes to put together a team capable of winning a championship. When it comes down to winning it , it is up to the players to do it. The owner has no control over that. Dave Roberts had to steal that base. John Henry could not do it.
  12. Is there any reason to resume play if/when it stops raining ? The game is pretty much meaningless and both teams have to travel tonight. We don't need to see Judge get another at bat. Just call it.
  13. What we have here is folks who , for whatever reason , like Bloom and the way he does things. They are excusing , explaining and rationalizing his lack of success. That gets back to my original point.
  14. We have been down this road too many times , but I will give it one more shot ; Dombrowski took over a Sox team that had finished last two years running. He was aggressive from the start and turned the team around immediately. Beat out the Yankees and won the AL East three straight years. Something that has not happened before or since. Today , as we wind up Bloom's third year , the Sox are back in last place , an embarrassing 21 games behind the Yankees. That is not my opinion or personal likes or dislikes. It is simply the truth.
  15. Yup. Making excuses for failure tends to breed more failure. And more excuses.
  16. .. My feeling is that it is best to be objective and results oriented. A lot of folks let their personal likes and dislikes affect their judgment. That applies to evaluating a GM , manager , player or just about anything else in life for that matter. When you hear a lot of excuses , explanations and rationalizations for lack of success , it is not at all productive . I guess it is human nature , but I don't think it is too smart.
  17. It has been inevitable for a while, but the Sox are now on the verge of elimination from the playoffs. One more Seattle win or Sox loss will do it. The only hope now is to escape the cellar, but that looks almost impossible also. A lost season for sure.
  18. One guy I might want to take a little longer look at is Ort. Just because he throws so hard. Obviously, he has not been able to harness it as yet and he is not a kid.
  19. The bullpen should be the number one priority. Not some afterthought. It needs an overhaul. So many games are lost because the opponent invariably has the better bullpen. How can you not see that? Bringing back this same crew and hoping for better results would be insane.
  20. With the metrics people, it's all about numbers and probabilities . They don't consider the psychology involved in the game.
  21. Rule change needed. Five wild cards next year.
  22. Either the budget is getting tight or they were being punished if they had to take the subway back.
  23. You can say that you are getting your ass kicked every day because you live in a tough neighborhood. But nobody cares. Unless you move or get a lot stronger, you are still going to get your ass kicked.
  24. I don't think the Sox are willing to outbid the Mets.
  25. No doubt it starts with the closer. And you build around that.
